Again you did marveleous… i would leave the dog as it. The light gives life to him and the fusy background don’t compete with the dog. Anything you decide to do, i’m sure it will be beautiful. Your portraits are great same as the cats.

I think that version 2 looks like a photo where the dog is in focus and the background is blurred. Love it as it is.

Yay for progress! Regarding the dogs, the highlight on the head in second painting is what draws my focus and seems to balance the water highlights. The one thing I might do is slightly increase the width of the dark border between the background and the top of the head, but I'm not as experienced as you are.

I think the second dog painting is perfect as is. I would leave it. I love it! So glad your Mom is doing well. I'm lucky to still have my parents too. Mom is 80 and Dad will be 85 this fall. Time goes so quickly.

I love all you create. It is so inspiring, creative and also informative. Here is my humble opinion about the dog painting. I feel like there a huge wave about to drown the dog. Does it need horizon? Or make the background darker or different color than the water. Once again this is my opinion. Ultimately it is your painting you do what you feel is best.

I say leave your dog painting alone. The dog is the focal point. I believe that darkening the background will take away from the dog.

I would suggest darkening the background on #2 dog just a bit - not much. I think it would focus your eye more on the dog that way. Now, not being anywhere near the expert you are, this is only a suggestion! But you asked. Love the kitties, especially the angle kitty. Have several of them waiting for me at the rainbow bridge. So glad your mom is still kickin' and fighting!

I love version 1 of the dog, it has life and energy and drama. Version 2 looks overexposed using photographic language. I'm not sure that changing anything is going to help, when you change something in the head you will have to change something in the water to balance it.

Yeah it's changing one thing that leads to another that scares me - I've done that too many times before and regretted it...but also did it successfully too! gah.

Darken the background but keep it out of focus...else darken the dog's head a bit...as it is, the head is blending with the light background. You might scan it or photograph it and play around with a print out or graphic program before you alter the painting

Version 2: I don't feel like needs to have the background darkened. It feels like portrait mode on a camera where the background is purposefully blurred a bit to bring focus to the foreground image of the dog, the ball, and the water ripples.

I'm a bit late to the party on this one and one of the few who say your dog portrait needs a tweak. The background is fine for now, but I see too much highlight on the head - the values are out a fraction (the background suggests an overcast day). So I would shrink that huge patch of highlight and merge it more with the darks of his/her fur (just to give more suggestion of the structure beneath). At the moment it feels unfinished (or that some one has taken to the dog's head with a shotgun). I hope I've explained that sufficiently. Your cats are amazing and I can see growth in your portraits. Thanks for another great video.

I think I would darken the background. I believe it would be easier to fix water than it would be to darken the head...and less scary perhaps. So glad you're able to have another Mom's Day with your Mom.

I don't usually do that though I know some artists do. For now I'm just leaving it out where I can see it daily and keep pondering - if I get tired of thinking "dang I should fix that" then it's time to work on it, but if it keeps pleasing me it might stay as is :)
