Helen Wagner was a true giant in daytime television!! I simply loved her character on As The World Turns. I still miss her and this beloved soap. As The World Turns and Guiding Light were the BEST soaps on daytime television!!!

A true legend, you'd never know this was her last scene. Over 90 years old and she was still at her best. The scene with Katie also had some really nice, fitting moments summing up Nancy's character, such as her love for Chris and her finally being able to move on with Mac.

Actually, this aired a month after Helen Wagner passed (5/1; this scene aired on 6/1)... so yeah, people knew.

ATWT wasn't a show I ever watched, but I recognize that Helen Wagner and her character Nancy Hughes is an American tv legend. Thanks for posting this.

Helen Wagner was the last of the Grande Dames of soaps! I only with she was around to deliver the last lines of ATWT: "Good evening, dear."

Actuallly, i could see Nancy in bed in the last scene...she smiles at Chris's picture on the nightstand and says, 'Good night, dear!'(opposite of her 'Good morning, dear!' which was the shows first words spoken)...she turns off the light and goes to sleep...fade to black!!!

Nancy was a terrific actress who took the sketchy character of Nancy Hughes and failed her out full-blown, full of shadings and complexities, much more than the standard issue wife and mother of the 1950s. She never lost her beauty, never lost her sharp focus on the character and the script.

Interesting that in Nancy's first scene she said "Good morning dear" and was probably pouring a cup of coffee back in the day - and as part of her last scenes she's in a coffee shop (at least not pouring coffee but actually being served) - she came a long way - well earned and deserved.

GREG MAY of Orlando, FL says: "My mom, the late RUTH MAY got hooked on ATWT while awaiting my birth in 1956. Daddy bought her a 20" Motorola TV set. HELEN WAGNER was her favorite character. Years later after we moved to Orlando, I got my parents tickets to go see EILEEN FULTON who brought her cabaret act to Florida. They talked about meeting 'Lisa" for years afterwards." lateOF

@dannybex "Rest in peace" (Latin: Requiescat in pace) is a short epitaph or idiomatic expression wishing eternal rest and peace to someone that has died. The expression typically appears on headstones, often abbreviated as "RIP". The backronym "rest in paradise" is also common as a variation.

Nancy Hughes, Alice Horton, Caroline Brady, Katherine Chancellor, Mona Kane, Myrtle Fargate, Viki Lord, Lila Quartermaine, Ada Hobson, Rachel Cory……all these soaps had their shining lady that always had great words of advice and wisdom to give.

Nancy was one of the first characters I remember when I started watching the show regularly in 1979, when she was in scenes with her then-paralyzed son Donald and her troublemaking daughter-in-law Joyce.

Before Dina Abbott Mergeron, Ann Douglas, Liz Foster, Jennifer Brooks, Beth Logan, Shirley Spectra, Mary Williams, Pamela Douglas, Katherine Chancellor, Stephanie Forrester, Gina Romalotti and Vivienne Avant there was Nancy Hughes, Oakdale's resident matriarch from As The World Turns.

It was a business move and it worked for them. They don’t have to pay lots of designers, actors, producers and shit. I can get their reason behind it even though I still miss them

@dannybex it comes from the concept that just because you're dead, you're not necessarily at peace, you may return as a ghost to haunt people, or you may find your soul suffering in Hell. Peace, is not considered to be a guarantee in older Christian traditions, and Ancient and Medieval Europe.

@BabyDillGerkin With all due respect, I obviously know what it means. I was asking why people use the phrase (especially "RIP") when in fact, they're not resting, and when someone dies, of course they're "at peace".

They did, in a way. Daytime TV's Old Guard were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2004, and she received one along with Don Hastings and Eileen Fulton.

@kolsten88 Why do people say "rest well" or "rest in peace"? She's DEAD, she's not "resting." Sheesh.
