This is a follow-up video to my video where I use vitamin C tablets to remove rust stains in a swimming pool. This video will cover using large amounts of Ascorbic Acid to treat staining in your entire pool. I cover using bulk Ascorbic acid and also using Natural Chemistry "Stain Free" - which is Citric acid.
This is a good treatment if your pool has a lot of staining and the spot cleaning is not an option. My pool has some staining on the steps and some of the walls. It isn't severe but has been getting worse over the years. I initially was just going to use 2.2 lbs for my 17,000 gallon pool (1 lb per 10,000 gallons). After the initial treatment the stains did lighten up considerably and I could have stopped. But I also wanted to see how the Natural Chemistry "Stain Free" worked. It is 60-100% Citric Acid which is very similar to Ascorbic Acid only a bit weaker. It seemed to also be very effective.
So you can order bulk Ascorbic Acid online - I got mine on amazon.com for $24.95 (AmazonPrime)
You can also order bulk Citric Acid or just buy the "Stain Free" which is effective also.
One note about the "Stain Free" is that when I called the manufacturer to go over the instructions they were under the impression that metal ions can be filtered out with a Pulp based filter aid. However, studies have shown that Metal Ions are just too small to be filtered out once the Metal Sequestering agents pull them out of the water and suspend them. The only effective way to remove metal from your pool water is to drain it and then refill it with non-metal containing water or to use the CuLator product I show here. CuLator has proven in lab test to indeed trap metal ions. It is expensive but cheaper than draining your pool. The only other option is to just keep adding the maintenance dose of sequestering agents every month to keep the metals suspended. I say all this to let you know to jut ignore the instructions on the back of the "Stain Free" product.
You also will need to keep your pH below 7.8 at all times as a high pH can lead to metals dropping out and staining again. Shocking your pool can also cause this to happen.
One note on running your filter 24 hours. If you have a Sand Filter you want to set it to recirculate which bypasses the filter sand which may have some iron deposits in it and which may drop out and re-stain the pool. If you have a D.E. or cartridge filter, jut run it like normal.
If you have time and want to read an excellent write-up on the process with lots of questions and answers to help you. Here is the link:
www.troublefree...
I am working on two follow-up videos for you also which should be done soon. One is on identifying pool stain types and the other will be on Jack's Magic Stain I.D. Kit. Both I think will help you determine if the Ascorbic Acid Treatment is right for your pool. once they are done I will include the video links here.
My pool does look a lot better. I can put off an Acid Wash for another couple of years (plaster is almost 10 years old) and the stains did lighten and in some spots are completely gone.
A short note on the Metal Sequestering Agents shown here:
HASA Super Stain out is a combination of an organic stain remover and a Metal Sequestering Agent. The company will not disclose the ingredients but there are three and one is for metals.
I like the Jack's Magic Stuff. The Blue, Pink, Purple and Magenta stuff are all metal sequestering agents. I like the Magenta Stuff as it has a general sequestering agent in it - any of them should work in this case.

I bought all vitamn C tablets (over a 1000 to be exact) and just broadcasted them out and followed by a metal sequstrant. It works great! My plaster went back to a bright white. A little faded stain spots can still be seen but they are very light.

Thank you for this video. I followed your instructions to remove the copper stains on my pool surface which were generated from an old spa heater. I first tested with ascorbic acid per your instructions and watched the test spot turn dark brown. I then followed your citric acid instructions. It looks like a brand new surface. I must amid, I did not expect such good results.

David, I did the complete process Saturday (Yesterday) including adding the culater and sequestering agent. I know I have to bring the clorine up slowly. First to 1 ppm. How many days should I wait to bring the clorine up to 1.0 then 2.0? Also can I add PH Plus now or should I wait a week? Thanks so much! Used this process a few times over the years. Works great!

As ;ong as you bring the chlorine and pH up gradually after day 2 you should be fine. No shocking and no rapid drops in pH help the process.

I have a gunnite inground pool with brownish stains. how should i go about treating this? i thought it was yellow algae at first, and tried treating it as such, but to no avail. can i use the method in this video? i am sure it is a rust stain, as i noticed our pool heater had a corroded part that caused the passing water to build up different metals and stain the surface. My pool holds over 20,000 gallons of water

So you use Clorox for your chlorine? What about tabs and auto chlorinator? I have a 10,000 gallon fiberglass pool and have been bateling a metal stain for a month now. I used Super Stain treat which got rid of the stain in under 1 hour. I then added Metal Free 1 hour after the stain treatment. I had a high Cyanuric acid level so i drained the pool 50% and re-filled it. Got my PH to 7.4. The stain started to re-appear so I shocked the pool hoping that would help but now the stain is back again. I have spent 4 weeks and at least $200 in chemicals. I guess I still have metal in the pool. Should remove the stain 1st then use the CuLator?
@SPL
@SPL 10 лет назад
I would switch over to liquid Chlorine or Bleach in your case since tablets are not recommended for fiberglass. For one it will lower the pH constantly and two, it raises the CYA level. When you have a metal stain to remove it the chlorine needs to be near or at zero. The pH 7.2-7.6. If the pH rises rapidly to 7.8-80 the stain will come back. If you shock your pool the metal sequestering agent will be neutralized and the metal will drop back into the pool. Try the process again and maybe use Culator as results have been good with that product. You will need to add a maintenance dose of the metal sequestering agent for a couple of months also. And try too keep chlorine levels low for a week or two and gradually raise them up. No shocking.

2nd treatment may not be needed. I just wanted to try both methods. The Stain Free is actually weaker as it is Citric Acid and not Ascorbic Acid. Try 1 lb for every 10,000 gallons of water. My question is how often should I be adding chlorine to the pool to bring it back so that it would hold? Dino Orlando Looks like you have a plaster pool with some color in it so the safest way to do it is with this 3" Tablet holder tool. It is a bit time consuming but 100% effective. Pentair Algae-Gon Chlorine Tablet Holder 542068 for Algae Stains & Black Algae: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Qj-o_H4AxA.html Here is the link for it: www.amazon.com/Pentair-542068-Snap-Adapt-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B004IBTPGC/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8 It is not being discontinued as far as I know. The negative reviews are from users who don't get the concept. You simply put the tablet in and then pull it towards you. No need to rub the black algae spot. One streak of the tablet on the black algae will kill it. The tool is not really made for rubbing so if you get the concept it will work for you. And the tablet streak won't stain your plaster either. So just start leaving white streaks over the black algae like in the video, let it sit and don't brush it, and it should kill the black algae.

@SPL
@SPL 10 лет назад
russell winters That is correct. I don't really worry about the pH, Alkalinity & CYA at the first treatment. The next day you can start to balance those. Depending on the shock you use the pH will be effected the first day so I don't bother with it until 24 hours later. the Cyanuric Acid level is important - if it is low you will want to add some after the first day. Adding it will also lower the pH in the pool depending on how much you add. If you are using the Yellow Out product it works best with a higher pH 7.8 or higher - but if the pool is green - I doubt the pH and alkalinity are balanced anyway. A lot of times a pool turns green due to low cyanuric acid levels so it is important to adjust that after shocking. I just don't do all that when the pool is a swamp. Day two or three is when you can focus on getting things in balance. Besides you will be cleaning the filter sometimes multiple times and if so you will wash out the granular cyanuric acid so I wait til the filter cleaning process is done with.

I have brown stains on my pool stairs and green stains on the walls and floor of my gunite pool. How can I get rid of them?
@SPL

A drain and acid wash might be the only way. You can try this but it might not do much from what you are describing.

Wanted to see if I can get your opinion on my pool. I have a waterline stain that is brown/copper in color. The vitamin C tab removes it and last season I removed it with stain free and metal free treatment. It looked great but as I raised the PH to normal levels or shocked the pool, the stain would return. Will the absorbic acid treatment get rid or it for good or should I look into something else?

Matt Overton Metal in the pool is a tricky thing. The metal ions don't get filtered out so whenever your pH gets too high or you shock your pool the suspended metal ions in the sequestering agent drop back out onto the pool surface. People have had some success with the CuLator product. It doesn't work every time but it might be worth a shot to get the metal ions out of the pool water. They sell a kit also or you can purchase ascorbic acid or the Stain Free again. You will just need a metal sequstering agent again to suspend the metal so the CuLator can remove them from the water. Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 So just to make sure the order is correct. Use absorbic acid with a metal sequestering agent (which do you prefer BTW), then add the CuLator to remove the metals? Anything else I am missing or your recommend me do in addition? I have been struggling with this for a year, any help or recommendations is appreciated

Matt Overton You are correct. Jack's Magic makes a good sequstering agent. Here is a link for you: www.amazon.com/The-Magenta-Stuff-Size-Ounce/dp/B004VU8HWS/ref=pd_sim_lg_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=08PD30NFH42NWDH175RM Just make sure you keep your chlorine low and then raise it very gradually. One thing I noticed with ascorbic acid is that since it lowers the pH the chlorine will stay pretty low even after you add it - low pH causes chlorine to be used up quickly. So don't be surprised if the chlorine keeps zeroing out. Refer to the Poolcalculator.com in order to raise your chlorine level gradually - try to keep it at 1.0-2.0 ppm. And keep the pH under 7.8 as much as possible. Give the CuLator a month to work and keep adding the maintence dose of the metal sequestering agent for a few months. Hopefully the CuLator will pull the metal out - I recently did a treatment and after a month the CuLator bag was a blue color which is a good sign that it pulled metals out.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thanks so much! Your site and videos are awesome. Is there a formula for how much absorbic acid to add? I have a 7500 gallon pool. Also, the pool is fiberglass not sure if that matters on which method you recommend

hey david, i have a fiberglass pool that turned completely black. i added a little muriatic acid on the top step and it took off the black stuff. as the acid spread through the entire pool the black stuff came off. any ideas what the black stuff is and how to avoid it?

Probably Copper in the water reacting with the Cyanuric Acid - you may want to add some sequestering agent also. Lowering the pH usually will dissolve it on a fiberglass pool surface. Think about joining me on Patreon at the $10 level - trying to get a group of 10 guys together by March to get a discounted Liability insurance rate. Still working on nailing down the monthly Insurance rate but I think with the discount it will be $59.00 a month. Just a sales pitch for you ;)

I actually got the Liability Ins numbers nailed down today from my agent. $50 a month for a $1 million dollar policy - plus the $100 annual fee is waived each year. Through SPPA. Let me know if you are interested.

@SPL
@SPL 9 лет назад
Teresa Desiderio What type of pool surface do you have? Plaster, Vinyl or Fiberglass? And no this will not work but I can offer you other suggestions.

Is plaster. thanks

Teresa Desiderio Try using 320 wet & dry sand paper on it. That should rub it right off - hopefully.
