fantastic video!! so helpful best of the bunch!! I'm planning to rent & drive a car in Scotland this June & although I've been driving for 20 years in Canada I'm super nervous especially about the roundabouts & right hand turns as we are on the opposite side of the road & have hardly any roundabouts I plan on watching this quite often over the next 2 months, thank-you for sharing all you knowledge I'll feel a bit safer driving about. xo

To add some further clarification regarding this question below of whether it is possible to approach in the right lane (under the bridge) in order to take the "Town Centre" right hand lane in the 2nd exit. On a driving test this morning a pupil mistakingly did precisely that, and was marked down for "Response to road markings". There was no adverse effect on any other road user at the time so the driving fault was a minor, but it does go to demonstrate that it is technically incorrect (although I do appreciate you see locals doing exactly this quite often to avoid the queues in the left lane on the approach to the roundabout). Hope that helps anyone wondering how it would be interpreted on a driving test.

Hi Tom, I am a learner, I just want to ask you about the round about exit going to I think a residential houses is that exit counted as an exit of round about.Note:I haven’t been there yet just watching your video. Thanks

Hi. No it doesn't tend to feature in the planning for this r/b. It leads to a dead end and has extremely little traffic either going into it or out. While we make an effort to ensure the other entry/exits aren't blocked, not so with the one you are referring to.

At 13 mins, if the cars were any further back onto the roundabout due to the traffic lights, should you wait before entering the roundabout to avoid causing more congestion? Thanks Tom.

Yes. If you are able to drive on to the roundabout and pause between an entry and exit, then all well and good. But what we all try to do if possible is ensure that entrys and exits are not blocked - because that unnecessarily prevents other road users from going where they want to go. If you can spot that it is not wise to go, and someone behind bibs you with the horn, then really you should hold firm and still not go - the driver behind may not be able to see the extent of the congestion. The other exit lane by the way, to the right of the queue, rarely gets queued up to the roundabout, which is a good job, because if that were to happen too, there really would be "grid lock" on that roundabout!

On 3 lane roundabout, ( near asda petrol station) mid lane arrow is pointing on right and i need to take the mid lane, what would be the signal, left or right? Or nothing?

At 6:35 you get a lot of people using that lane to go 3rd exit under the bridge towards A52 and once i saw a woman go all the way round the roundabout in lane 1 "the outermost lane" and exit where she entered. How she did not hit anyone i dont know she cut up at least 4 other cars.

Yes I quite agree, you do indeed, although it is technically incorrect. Another way to look at that approach is to mentally take the Asda store out of the equation, pretend it is not there, and therefore take out the furthest most left lane out of the equation too. What do you have left? You have 2 exits in front of you, one to the left (petrol station) and one under the bridge. The petrol station uses the middle lane, and the bridge uses the right lane. But I do agree, you do see a lot of odd stuff going on, much of which it has to be said, would not pass a driving test...tom

I just watched the last 5 min and see that you mentioned people using different lanes to get to A52. Another tip on a roundabout is if there is 2 lanes entering but lane 1 is congested and you want to take the first exit off, instead of queueing, go in the innermost lane and go all the way around and then take your exit. Although i did get breathalised doing that once

hello just passed my test. just wondering if I wanted to go to the town centre lane (coming from under the bridge), do I still use the left hand lane or he right hand lane? ( I live in Grantham).

Hi Aaron That's a really good question because as it stands with just 2 lanes on the approach and one left arrow and one right arrow, you would naturally think you should be in the left lane. However, thinking this through this is going to very much depend on whether there is that long tailback of traffic in the left lane of the exit. If the left lane is solid, tailing all the way back to the entry point then it would be illogical to get held in that traffic even when you want to be in the Town Centre lane (right lane) which is often much more freely available. The problem is of course that by using the right lane on the approach to the roundabout and then exiting in the 2nd exit straight over, you would be not complying with the white paint; it appears to me to be a moot point. In my travels, I see a few examples where the white paint is just not adequate for the junction that it is designed for and this seems to me one such example. You'll know from your experience that the junction approach is wide, so if there were a tailback to the entry then common sense would suggest manoeuvering just right (not far right) and getting into that middle lane of the roundabout to then exit in the Town Centre lane. Probably not the clarity you were looking for, but that is my opinion of the good question you ask...tom
