Thank you so much for testing these out! I have also used Liquidtex Matte Medium and Matte Varnish instead. I would use Matte Medium between layers and the varnish to seal. I know these can also be used with an airbrush machine, so I have bottles of both matte and gloss versions. On a side note, if you are simply looking to seal a body (not blush it), would you disassemble a doll? Previously I have unstrung Hujoo Mini Freya when I blushed her, but I am daunted by the amount of additional parts in a MSD.
@AsenvaBJD
@AsenvaBJD 4 года назад
Oh that's awesome you have used the Liquitex products! I was wondering about those too! So I would always recommend taking a doll apart if you want to get a real thorough spray. You can spike the parts on a empty cardboard box and spray all angles. But I will be super honest and say that I am like the laziest person ever and I just do it whole and flip them like a pancake.
@PaeoniaDrop
@PaeoniaDrop 4 года назад
@@AsenvaBJD An issue with liquidtex matte medium between layers is that it can catch dust. So if I take a break, I'd store the resin in a container. I am also lazy and with the shortage of elastic lately, I'll probably pancake them at different poses.

I started into the wonderful world of dolls with monster high faceups, and Testors Dull Cote. I have to say i love it. Or works great and is widely available and the price is RIGHT. But when i tried MSC, obviously i liked it more, but there wasn’ta huge huge difference in my opinion. Great video, your quite informative and very likable. ❤️

Late comment, but...I have that Vallejo spray and I found it's not very sensitive to humidity. I sprayed this stuff on right after rain and it dried just fine, I just had to wait a little longer (I recommend at least half an hour). My floating head still has that rainy day faceup and it's holding up well so far, after a few weeks.

I started with Testors and the only issue I had was that over time it does yellow. However, despite not being UV protected, the resin underneath yellowed less than un sealed resin.

You should give Army Painter's Matte a whirl sometime. It's a wargames company like GW, but i find (in my climate) it's even matte-r than Citadel. Not on vinyl thou. Then sticky-head-curse strikes at times.

Can I ask you something 🥺? Is it necessary to apply varnish on the face of the doll before making the face up? If yes, why is it important? I want to know because I’m new to this hobby
@crazyhammie8864
@crazyhammie8864 2 года назад
Hi, I'm new to this hobby as well, but to what I heard about so far, the answer is yes, it is important to apply the sealant even before making a face up, not just between layers or at the end. I believe it's important partly to protect the original surface of the doll and to be able to clean off the face up properly if you ever wanted to completely redo it. The other reason would be what she mentioned at the end of the video as well, it provides a better surface for the pastels, brings out more colors too, I'd assume the original resin surface might be too slippery plastic, while the sealant creates this more matt paper like surface the pastel needs. I hope this helps, I'm waiting for a practice doll at the moment to try making a face up, it's a fun hobby!

This might be a dumb question - will these sealants work on monster high/vinyl and plastic dolls? I have been using MSC for my MH faceups (and will probably continue to use it for resin bjds). But I want to change from MSC for the MH dolls because it is just so toxic. Thank you for the help!
@lulu_749
@lulu_749 Год назад
This might be a dumb question , but how necessary is it to unstring a doll in order to successfully body blush? I really want to body blush my doll once she arrives, but I'm terrified of taking her apart and then struggling to put her back together. This will be my first bjd and I'm somewhat nervous lol.
@AsenvaBJD
@AsenvaBJD Год назад
I’m not going to lie….. I’m the laziest person ever lol and I used to body blush my dolls too and honestly would not take them apart. It’s more challenging to seal since it’s bigger as a whole but you can flip it like a pancake 😝

Quite a silly question, but I am a beginner. Are you supposed to use sealant before or after actually painting the face up on? Sealants confuse me a lot when used on dolls, so please excuse me.
@lulu_749
@lulu_749 Год назад
Sealants add a layer of texture to the surface so that the paint stays on, so you want to spray your doll before you start and every time you want to 'save your work' with thirty minute intervals between each spray.

Do you need sealant? What if you don't want to put any?
@AsenvaBJD
@AsenvaBJD 4 года назад
If you want the faceup to stay and not fade or wipe off, yes it is needed. If you don't put any on it won't stay in place. Pastel could fade easily and your paint could come off easier. It also might be hard to put anything on it if you don't pre-seal it. Sealant is pretty important and can really help in a faceup :)
