i remember seeing them as supporting act of robbie williams in 2000. all my friends were like "oh my god, i saw robbie williams live" and i was like "oh my god, i actually got to see ash live" ;-)
Same but in 2001, supporting Stereophonics at Castle Donington. My then GF didn't feel good and we left halfway through the Phonics' set, but i'd already seen what i came for :) There's just something about their style of music that I absolutely love ❤
I was wondering Who the hell is playing the solo? They both appeared to be playing chords on it. But on closer inspection it's Tim and it's some seriously cool playing through phaser and wah. Utterly awesome
Annie Lennox interpreted the song according to her style and as much as I disliked it, that was her take and her fans liked it. The song is great that's why she covered it and Tim Wheeler was proud. I would be too if I wrote it because Annie's a music icon...
yes they did back in 2000. jj72 and new order where the other support acts on that evening. i think i was the only one who enjoyed the support acts more than robbie :)
@pintpot there is some backing track going on during the solo because in parts charlotte is strumming fast and tim is doing a power chord with the big swing of his arm while the music is playing the swirly guitar line that could only be played by picking ie not strumming fast or windmill arm movements. drummers got headphone in his ear could mean click track.
@BeuKubKaa having seen her back with the band on this recent Free All Angels + Hits tour, I would love to see her back permanently. It was awesome, like she never left.
everyone has an opinion theyre entitled to, I saw Annie Lennox at the freddie mercury tribute and she engaged the crowd more than a lot of the others that day, she has a talent that may not be best experienced on the tube. I love both versions and listen to them according to how I feel. probably not fair to compare the two after all he's a frontman, writer etc with different objective than her
?! There are 2 guitar parts in the bridge. Charlotte plays one, Tim plays the other. I should know coz our band spent ages watching this tape so we could copy them.
Like I said man, I respect her. I don't think you can turn around & say that someone with a career like hers is rubbish due to a, imo, terrible cover version. I think comparisons are inevitable or like & dislike from two sets of fans. I think a lot of Ash fans are upset that a song that reminds them of their youth or a moment in time of importance has been covered badly, & now that version is played a lot and we feel like something that was ours has been gang-raped & we have to listen.
You can tell he's nervous here as his voice is a bit shaky and lower than usual. JH is probably a big deal for any UK person who grew up watching 90s greats performing. Still a good performance. Like somebody else said, Tim can write great tunes.
@jjoeuk wow, can't believe this is important enough to argue about! : ) the bit u are talking about is at 3:03, right? charlotte is playing the 'swirly guitar line'. u can see her hit her effects pedal (overdrive?) as she switches from strumming to 'picking'. it looks confusing coz tim was playing exactly the same line immediately b4. u expect it to be him again, but it's not. let's not fall out over this. it's a great song and that's what matters : )
Wheeler wrote the song (a fantastic pop song as usual from him by the way) and performs it well, though not as good as he could have. I saw them last night and his voice was great. Lennox's version is full of OAP bombast and no-one with any emotion should say that hers is better. All I can say is Lennox's version is empty. I respect her work with The Eurythmics and some solo stuff, but she gets too much credit these days for past glories.
you know, i wouldn´t say that he is shit. he´s a really good performer. and his music was also good, back then. but Ash ARE still great and robbie... well, let´s not talk about that :)
Good Grief....... Ash exploded onto the music scene in 1996 and made a big impression....... I've been in bands from the age of about 13..... I was in 6th form at school.... ended up at Uni sharing halls with a guy called Gerard who went 2 school with them..... I felt like I'd won the lottery!! "Wow!! I'm friends with one of Ash's schoolmates!!" I thought..... .....but fuck me this was awful. What the hell happened??? How did they become so shit so quickly??? ............. weird.
WHY OH WHY DIDN'T THEY REPLACE CHARLOTTE?? They still write and record some fantastic music but without a second guitarist live they cannot do the songs justice, especially the old ones from when they were at their height. They could have employed the ugliest fattest fella they could find but if he could play I'd love it, but until three become four they cannot match performances such as this one on the IVOR NOVELLO winner! Sorry.
Tony smith I ain't deaf you are just in denial. If he kept still instead of moving around like a loon, then the solo would of been class. Don't jump about if you can't perfect a solo while doing so.
Rubbish Rubbish Rubbish if you people think this is better than Annie Lennox's version then you have no idea about singing . He is flat most of the way through the song and his pitch in the high notes is dreadful . Annie Lennox has to be one of the best female artists around.
