The 1986-87 Ashes series was a series of five Test cricket matches that were contested between England and Australia for The Ashes. The series was played at five venues across Australia, starting on 14 November 1986 in Brisbane and concluding on 15 January 1987 in Sydney. England were the defending holders of the Ashes going into the series, having reclaimed the urn in 1985.
England, under the leadership of Mike Gatting, successfully retained the Ashes after winning the Boxing Day Test match in Melbourne.

One of my favourite ever Ashes series. I’ve been lucky enough to see both our Ashes victories in Australia in the past 35 years or so.

Very enjoyable documentary, thanks for putting this up. I love the anecdotes from the legends who played. Especially nice to hear from Lamby, who was probably the most underrated English batsman of the 80's (due to his being over-shadowed by the exploits of Botham and Gower) - a very important stroke-maker who used to come in at number 4 and more often than not, did a great job. His test average wasn't amazing, but funnily enough, nor was Botham's - the key thing is, they often went big when it was really needed.

The Boxing Day test was the nadir of Australian cricket.

Definitely the low point of Australian cricket. Although our team was called not very good when we went out there. Can’t bat, bowl or field. Other than that they’re ok!! That’s what was said about England!!

@@mrkipling2201 You mean one journo said that & it was often repeated so as to make fun of him. Seriously, if Eng didn't win that series they all should've turned in their bats as it was about the worst performed Aus side ever, apart from 78-9 when WSC was on.

@@mrkipling2201 The Australian team was missing players banned for the rebel tour to RSA. Border was a poor captain at that stage, leading a patched together team that had no spirit. England got a freebie that season, as they did in '78-9. What was extraordinary is the way Aus bounced back, winning the WC & becoming #2 to the Windies in test cricket, in the next couple of years. The players involved in that transformation have spoken of the motivation created by that Boxing Day performance.

@@sentimentalbloke185 agreed. I take it you’ve heard Border talk about when they were watching Pat Cash in the Davis Cup and the comments from the prime minister of Australia at the time, about 11 Pat Cash’s being needed at the MCG??

I was on the hill on day one at Sydney. The crowd was filthy when Steve Waugh got out and even filthier when England claimed a catch against Dean Jones. This was a great series although there were some selection issues for the 5th Test apart from the two Taylors. McDermott had been selected in Melbourne and taken 4/83 but was dropped for the 5th Test, and GRJ Matthews was also dropped for Sydney despite averaging over 53 with the bat in the first 4 tests (his bowling wasn't very good though). Wellham was picked for what turned out to be his final test, and I remember some commentators saying that Wellham was the real captain of Australia for that match.
