@@Krunkeridleios It seems smart business-wise because he squeezes out some extra views this video, but a lot of those new viewers won't return to the channel again because they got clickbaited. The smart creator would come up with ideas to not get temporary new views but permanent viewers that keep returning. It is stale, it's also manipulative and yes others do it too but the others content is mostly trash and has to resort to clickbait to get views, Odditys content ain't trash and doesn't need this shit.

It does not matter how many times Intrepid or Content Creators mention that this it's a test and not a game. The general public will always treat it as a game, where some people just have a higher tolerance for bugs and issues than others.
I think you make a lot of good points. I like your idea of the narrative being supporting them in creating a game we believe in. The same reason early backers bought into ashes. One thing I don't agree with is that they need more money and that's why they are opening up alpha to purchase again. It is fully funded, they aren't doing this because they are out of money. They are doing this because not everyone got to make the decision if they wanted to support this project or not. If I just found out about ashes and believed in it just like all the kickstarter backers did, I would be a little bummed that I couldn't contribute because I found out about it late. This gives those people a chance to do what you are saying, which is to support an indie studio creating a great game. The cost of the keys are also just to offset the cost of them being on the servers for that period of time. The whole out of money narrative comes from channels that don't know anything about the project and is being repeated by uninformed viewers.
Right I chose the kickstarter pack that got me alpha 2 access because at the time that’s what i could afford and it sounded great. Can’t wait to dive in to a2.
I agree on the message, support is a good way to go. I do think 100+ k Alpha testers will be allot of voices and the majority will give a review like its a released game. Why not? They did spend a good chunk of money to play. Allot will not see this as testing. Gamers are so used to playing early access na dthat not what this is.

Intrepid monthly capital burn rate with 200+ employees and overhead must be huge. They need help to get to the goal line. I fully expect there to be a box price for those who didn't buy alpha and also a monthly fee around $25.00. Quality cost money. Steven deserves a return on his investment.
So to be clear Star Citizen pulls in over 100 million a year in funding and all that money is spent on development as they release their yearly financials, if you think Steven can afford to fund this game out of his own wallet for the next 3-4 years till completion you are ignorant of the cost of game development, SC spends 30 million a year alone on servers and Amazon web services which means when the alpha kicks off AOC is going to start burning through cash at an enormous rate. I can see them looking for a publisher in the not so far future someone like Amazon would probably be interested in picking this game up knowing that he will be out of cash soon.
@rooster1012 the only issue is... I as many "supported" the game with +$375 since 2018... we got nothing. It is 2024. I support SC and we get A LOT. Comparing thebprogress here vs Star Citizen is just insane. We got nothing. Not to mention like you said that they may still give up at some point...
steven literally said that the extra years of development would "come out of mine and john's pockets" and told everyone that the game was funded whether they bought keys or not. he also already gave his plans for regional publishing. did you just show up like a week ago?
They dont care, even if Ashes does poorly. They are making a engine to sale to as many people as possible thats more important but a bonus if ashes does do well.
I've been posting about Stephens affiliate scams he has been doing for 15+ years for 5+ years on their reddit and the copium overflowing fanbase downvotes EVERYTHING and refuses to see Ashes of Creation for what it is, its a MASSIVE moneygrab started by a business man who knew the mmorpg community very well and saw an opportunity to monetize the fomo of players who long for a good mmorpg.
its 100% on intrepid. if the only priority was having the game be tested, then the paywall would be unnecessary. regardless of whatever PR-speak there is, you ARE buying access to the alpha of the game. not holding them accountable is the fastest way to ensure that the game will be trash
I honestly don't think there's anything Intrepid could say that would please the people complaining about paying to test outside of changing the price to free, but I also think there's a massive misconception that the game has a box cost, so a lot of people see this as paying to test but then also having to buy the game.

This is basically what ive been saying ad nauseum. Intrepid needs to be transparent when asking for money. They need to frame it as supporting the project with the PERK of getting hands on testing in the process.
I'm confused. They closed the packages that included Alpha access. People that didn't purchase a package complained about not being able to do the alpha, so Intrepid said let's just scale the servers and add more people in and released a way for people to gain that access. They are not trying to market an alpha key but give additional avenues for those that might have missed an oportunity. If I wanted access, I would just upgrade my package but for those that do not own one, you have no way of participating thus they released the alpha access. Am I missing something?
In essence yes. But people are complaining about the high costs to get into the alpha. The problem is that they couldn't set the cost to low otherwise it would have been a slap in the face to everyone that paid more for the packages before. So, they were stuck in a hard place of having to have a high price in order to not run off all the people that have bought in before. Now people are just complaining because it costs $120 to get into the first phase of alpha 2. Also before he changed the packages it was $120 for just Alpha 2 access, no beta access, no game time, ect. That has now been changed and its not so bad now.

You should understand what your buying before you buy. Sure maybe they could better communicate that, but Gamers, and game testers should know all this already. If they get even 1 million players Steve will get his money back in less than 4 months with just the monthly subs. If they are in debt for only 50 millions then the game is still safe.
I appreciate your thoughts. I personally feel that opening the alpha access to the community at a comparable price point was nice of them to do. I appreciate that they sweetened the deal for those people. I am happy that there are people who want to support something I support. The more, the merrier. Early support will build more community bonds as well, which will make this community even more special than other game communities. The drama is part of it. Huge hugs to all the angry people.
It's like if I wanted to create a community garden and charged people to get early access to walk around, choose flowers, layout, even plant some of their own etc. people could say "You're chargine people to look round an unfished garden and even create it!!" But you'd be paying because you believe in the indea of the garden being made. Intrepid are making a game using players to fund rather than a publisher, however because this is a multi-million pound MMO people pay attention because of the amount of the money they are asking for.
I feel like all of it is blown out proportion. I would like a great game to come out. The noise coming from streamers or kids living off of student loans is annoying. If you want to create a multi million dollar studio and give A2, B1, B2, and 1month for less than 120, then do it. Make it free. If not then don't worry about it.

Question, it sounded like you where trying to say that Steven lied to everyone about the game being fully funded unorder to gain support from people. That way they don't think the game is a scam since it came from GoFundMe. If that's the case that he actually lied to everyone it would look way worse than the key situation. since he has been a guy people have put their trust in. 100k ppl bought the 250 dollar alpha = 25 million let’s say ppl bought the cosmetics that could few millions. If another 100k buy the 100 dollar that is another 10 million. Let say it releases in Nov 2026 I am sure it will have a million subs plus at 15-20 per sub. He will easily make his money back.
AoC doesn't need to change the narrative - they need to change their business practices. All this situation has done is call out things that were obvious that people didn't think were obvious until they heard them out loud. I was a big believer in AoC when it was announced. I lost hope over the years watching the glacial progress and seeing new "supporter packs" being pushed every quarter. The money is running out/has run out, and they don't want to say it. They're INCREDIBLY short on testers, so if they need them that badly, WHY would they be charging - especially THAT much? They're in a hole. I wanted Ashes to be good. I really did - but I don't think it will be, if it ever releases at all. It's taking so long to develop that by the time it does release in 2-5 years, it's already out of date and behind CURRENT mmos. They spent so much time laying systems for the PvP-drivers in the nodes that they have effectively done nothing for the PvE side of things. It's bare-bones at best. If you need an example of what happens to PvP-driven games with no PvE depth in the MMO space, just look at Steven's favorite game Lineage 2. It's a shambling corpse of a game propped up only by Chinese bot farms. There is NO substance in Ashes right now. And while they do have some great, grand ideas, none of them are actually playable. There's no value proposition for the game as it currently exists, and they haven't shown any signs that they're even working on the stuff that actually matters. The combat still feels janky and floaty, even after the updates. There's nothing to really DO even when there is testing. They haven't shown a single PvE feature since the initial Asmongold hype video where they killed the open world dragons before the castle siege. At MINIMUM, this game is 3 years away from a full release, and they're already out of money. It's in a death spiral, and content creators are just latching onto it for those clicks before the game dies and falls off the radar. I was a huge believer and bought into the hype. Now I don't believe. At all. They can prove me wrong and I'll be happy, but it's not looking good.
I'm a computer science student and aspiring gamedev. I view it as 2 things: 1: playing the game early and getting to see the journey 2: an academic venture to get in the underbelly of an alpha and see how they handle it and how it goes.
I think that paying for Alpha 2 addresses a supply and demand issue with AoC. If Intrepid made Alpha 2 completely free, then it would probably overwhelm the servers with players. Intrepid needs to limit the number of players testing the game. How else should they limit the number of players without upsetting the ones that don't get to play Alpha 2?
Testing aside, I'm tired of playing placeholder games with guildies, at least this we can all play and be together in a game instead of scattered all over the place.
I am sy but having 3 different type of keys is fomo cut and dry end off. phase 1 is a joke only 2 race's and some content. I wont them to remove Phase 1/2 and just go with phase 3 from here we can see a full view of the game road map. and since MDA is not going to be a thing content creators can start creating.
This game suffers from Star Citizen syndrome. Also, no matter how you want to re-define it, you are testing the game and PAYING for the privilege's to do so. That's the reality. Your stuff gets wiped. Its really anti-consumer practice. Its not even early access, its merely you get to run around on X days for a bit, then you get locked out of your account until they decide to release the game officially. In a world where people shouldn't pre-order until a full review comes out, I am shocked they asked for 120 dollars in a economy this bad to "try" a demo of their game and then improve on said feedback. They want your wallet and your time. Its BS really. If they value player feed back, open the game up to everyone and let everyone have a say, not just the few who can pay. But this is about money, and hoping MANY will pay based on hype alone. Anything else is cope.
The 30 million amount I think was the original sum. I dont think that includes the money collected from the players in form of for example the cosmetic packs that they have sold. Also that might not be all Stevens money but money that he also got from investors.
I don't like AoC's recent direction. First they advertise they A2 as "persistent" now we learn it's only a couple days a week. Not even talking about the "delays" AFTER having given dates or quarters. I think it'd be smarter to word it as "funding" the game instead of paying to "test" too.
I never understood all the fuss. You dont like the game or how they are administering the game then dont play it and move to something else. Giving this much time and emotions just to complain says, in my opinion, that you have nothing better to do with you time. There are 1000's of games out there, find one you like and blow off the rest.
WRONG, all of the blame lies with intrepid.... imagine not charging for the alpha test and just allowing players to buy stuff ingame to speed up their progress instead, you get more people trying the alpha and some revenue from the people who wants to try more things faster.
or... hear me out. Just keep doing what they are doing and when A2 launches 95% of this goes away and a new *THING* will pop up for people to be upset about. Ultimately the people that are truly interested in this game will play it when it comes out, but ONLY if the game itself is a good game. (Good combat, good game loops, no PTW). If people are in game having fun when it actually launches and Intrepid keeps that going with their player base all this current "Doomium" goes away.
That's the thing though, the damage has been done to a hand full of vocal minority people. (Who, BTW, are going to still play this game if it's a good game.) The majority of people that want this game to succeed could care less.
You are not QA, stop larping. Youre not creating unit testing scripts or jira tickets. Youre paying to support the project and in exchange youll get access to testing, and your payment will be used to lighten the server costs. Theyve already changed the new keys multiple times to make it a better deal after listening to feedback, but I doubt you care. If you want to get paid for testing, feel free to apply to the Quality Assurance Tester role on their career page.
There is no box price. It will be subscription-based. In fact, if you pay the $120 now, 1 month of game-time is included (I think a sub is &15 per month).

I'm an Ashes backer/tester. I ENJOYED TESTING in Alpha 1...it was bare bones, ue 4, not much content. I look forward to TESTING in Alpha 2, all phases. Yes, there will be bugs galore, but over time these will be fixed/resolved and we'll all get a game that many of us can enjoy by launch. If you are interested in helping to TEST the game, join in Alpha 2 if affordable to you. If not, just wait.
Asking people to pay to do bug testing that is a scam, this is more reasons why im not hyped about the game cause it could turn out a big failure on release.

The tone you are looking for is called: Early Access. Its not about testing, but they can provide access to an early stage of the game to people who want to have access to it.
Or they could just say they don't have infinite money, this is part of what it takes to fund a studio, and it is what it is. None of this BS about "it's just the cost of keeping the A2 servers up!" or "it's to weed out weak testers!" BS.

AoC has always been a scam. Sorry to say but that has always been the reality of things. I'll revisit this comment in the future when it releases, if that ever happens to begin with and time will prove it.
I agree. Maybe im just pre conditioned from crypto and star citizen, 2 products you make a transaction and get nothing tangible you can hold in your hand in-return and maybe never will. We are all used to geting something in return which is fair. Steven got himself in a pickle, on one hand he says fully self funded...and now basically asking for the comunity to help out with some cash. In reality im willing to bet the gaming comunity would help out in a major way if Steven would have talked to the crowd as if we were 2 friends just chillin vs game studio to customer. I swiped my card a long time ago, im in it for the full ride.
