I met both of them at their restaurant Sugar Bar years ago in NYC. The nicest people you could ever hope to meet. We often forget just how many classic songs this duo is responsible for… Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing, not to mention I’m Every Woman. Immortal talent! ❤❤❤
I don't get star struck often but I was like a babbling idiot when I met her a few years back... She is truly, along with her husband Nick one of my heroes...
The summer of 1984 had so many great tunes. Tina Turner, The Cars, Billy Idol, The Go-Go's, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Cyndi Lauper, Pointer Sisters, Asia, Culture Club, Prince.........shall I go on?
That was the reason they wrote so many great songs together. They were basically just saying how much they loved one another. The songs came from the heart
This is the very best song that Ashford and Simpson ever did!!! I watch this all the time. You can just see they are so madly in love with each other in every lyric of their song, every move in their dance and how they sing to each other!! I especially love how Ashford picks up his wife and sets her on the bench and he jumps up and joins her. Haha, my darling son always said that we were SOLID AS A ROCK like they were!!! One of my favorites always 💛💛💛💛
Ashford and Simpson are my favorite married couple they had a lot of good jams 😊 RIP Nick Ashford 🙏🏿 him and Valerie were definitely solid and a beautiful couple 😊
This is a real relationship goals song in my humble opinion! They went through hard times but still weathered the hard times! R.I.P. Nick Ashford. One of the best relationship songs ever written.
Another example of good soul music as real as is gets nick Ashford and his wife met in high school and from there built the legendary group they made many unforgettable songs and also helping Teddy Pendergrass make his return to the stage after a car accident that crippled him to a wheelchair but never lost his blessed voice in singing love songs! We recently lost Nick Ashford to a battle with cancer sadly missed but never forgotten I grew up on this awesome old school music and thank my parents for allowing me the opportunity to hear it and let it come alive in my own spirit no time in history will there ever be another R&B music as did these great singers and performers God bless them all!!!
I remember listening to this song over and over, not understanding a single word as a child but feeling so happy and safe when hearing it. It is one of the reasons I excelled at studying the English language. When I was a child, there were so many beautiful songs that called to me but that I could understand only on an emotional level because English was not my mother tongue (and no one in my family actually spoke it well enough to explain the lyrics to me). Now that I have a firm grasp of English, I can appreciate this song so much more. Thank you, Ashford and Simpson, for the beautiful memories, the beautiful melodies and your inspiring lyrics. Much love from Germany.
This song must have been a big hit in West Germany in 1984/5. I can recall its popularity among a group of German holidaymakers as they selected it almost every night on a restaurant's jukebox, in Majorca, in the summer of 1985. It was a family restaurant, and perhaps the jukebox selection was geared more towards soulful music. The restaurant had an idea. But frequently today eating establishments have no idea: and play stuff in which the words are indecipherable even if you could make them out.
Nick and Val are chemistry as singing couple and songwriters. Solid as a Rock thirty-nine years ago pure classic. RIP, Nick Ashford and Val his memories will always be with you.
Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson were two of the best songwriters Motown ever had....from the late 60s right on through. Check their discography....you might be surprised at some of the amazing music they wrote. R.I.P. Nick, you will be missed...and Valerie, keep on keepin' on.......
This is one of the best love songs that came out of the 1980's,one of the best of the bestest duo in the history of music, this song touched all lives 💕💕💖❤️,and bring all kind of people togethers 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕👏💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💕💕💕
I went to Sugar Bar also! Got to meet Nick. He was kind enough to ask me if I was OK because I was slightly loaded. For me, "Solid As a Rock" was my favorite from this fantastic duo. 😊 ❤ 👏
Listening to this is the closest thing to time travel. Too bad it wasn't the greatest time of my life, but at least amazing music like this was there to comfort me.
January and February 1985 when this was a hit in the UK,which after the first couple of weeks was gripped, and occasionally semi-immobilised,by a heavy winter's snows at the time. We seemed to get a snowless one every fourth winter in the late 70s and 80s here (in the south of England at any rate),and 1983-84 was one such, but the first quarter of 1985 more than made up for it by being a bit of a freezer on the whole.
My father and mother were married for 40 years last year. They were each other's best friends, they supported each other through thick and thin, discussions; it was there too. Last month my dear father passed away. I dedicate this song to my parents. They were "Solid "as a rock. Many tried to come between them; no one succeeded. Thanks for the music Nick and Valerie.
Exact same! I was just building a lego tower with my daughter and said solid, solid as a rock and it popped into my head for the first time in probably 20 years.
When I look back, I so thank God I witnessed and listen and enjoyed music of the 70's & 80's.This group was a beautiful group.May Nick Ashford soul R.I.P. Thank you Valerie and Nick for the beautiful music you gave us.It proves one thing to me, despite the inequalities and injustice against black people in the USA in the 70's & 80's this beautiful race of people sang beautiful and unforgettable songs to enjoy. When people look back maybe 2,000 years from now, they will say, truly they were good.
Soul, Funk r&b... Ich liebe diese Musik aus tiefem Herzen.... Vermisse diese Zeit sehr... Dieser Song hat unbedingt dazu gehört... Danke dafür....❤️🎶💕 .
And for love's sake, each mistake Ah, you forgave And soon both of us learned to trust Not run away, it was no time to play We build it up and build it up and build it up And now it's solid Solid as a rock That's what this love is That's what we've got, oh Solid, solid as a rock And nothing's changed it The thrill is still hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot Oh, you didn't turn away When the sky went gray Somehow we managed We had to stick together (oh, oh) You didn't bat an eye When I made you cry We knew down the line We would make it better (oh, oh) And for love's sake, each mistake Ah, you forgave And soon both of us learned to trust Not run away, it was no time to play We build it up and build it up and build it up And now it's solid Solid as a rock That's what this love is (oh, oh) That's what we've got (oh) Yes, it is Solid, solid as a rock And nothing's changed it The thrill is still hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot Oh, gone with the wind Another friend Got in between Tried to separate us (oh, oh) Oh, knock-knock on wood You understood Love was so new We did what we had to (ooh, ooh) And with that feeling We were willing to take a chance So against all odds, we made a start We got serious, this wouldn't turn to dust We build it up and build it up and build it up And now it's solid Solid as a rock That's what this love is, oh That's what we've got, oh Solid (yes, it is) Solid as a rock And nothing's changed it The thrill is still hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot , hot Solid, solid as a rock (you know it, well, you know it, baby) Solid, solid as a rock (lovin' me, lovin' me, oh) Solid (don't leave me, baby) Solid as a rock (well, well, well, well) Solid, solid as a rock (every day it gets sweeter, now) Solid, solid as a rock (good, good, well, it's good, good, good) Solid
