Close-quarter fighting is a key element in Ashihara Karate. It allows you to better control the opponent as opposed to fighting him at a distance. Moving in (early) as soon as the opponent attacks also disrupts his momentum, thus allowing your counter-techniques to be delivered with minimal resistance by him.
