I wonder if those odd blank spaces are to make room for the various ads and flavor text in the margins that showed up in the original magazine serialization. Not having seen any he original magazine pages, I can’t say for sure beyond speculation. I need to read Ashita no Joe all the way through because it’s gorgeous and I own the complete bunko set, but the dialogue is so dialectical that my N2 ass struggles to make heads or tails out f it sometimes. Guess I just gotta study more-or fork over for the (expensive) upcoming English translation

When you get weird decisions like that, I chalk it up to the expectations and deadlines being double or quadruple the workload of an American comic creator. It’s like doing a 24 hour comic but with a little more time and an assistant by your side. Shortcuts are going to happen. A lot.
