Ashleigh's dream of becoming a professional freediver almost ended before it was even a thought. Battling an auto-immune disorder left her physically inactive for most of her childhood.
Join Ashleigh as she overcomes a traumatic childhood and puts her Architecture career on hold to pursue her dream of becoming a professional freediver. She now experiences another world some rarely get to see, and gains incredible accomplishments along the way.

Freediving is very Zen, intensely spiritual... the slow repeat cycle of deep relaxation thru deep breathing, one last very deep breath, dive... enjoy the sea full of life, the marine response, the natural high of endorphins and dopamine... ascend... do it again. Very nice that you found it Ashleigh.

I had the chance to learn under Ashleigh while she helped teach my intermediate freediving class here in the Florida Keys. Learning her story is awesome. She was so humble, I'm happy she's following her dream without abandon. 215' is incredible. At seven atmospheric pressures she's pushed beyond her residual lung capacity.

I started practicing free diving back home (puerto rico) but now I'm living in new jersey and it's hard to get inspired to continue with classes, work and the feeling of "what's the point i'm not going to get to freedive anywhere here anyway". i'm hoping eventually i'll get some more free time and have more opportunities to practice again because it really is an amazing experience to be beneath the surface, observing the organisms around you and forgetting that time is passing by for a few long seconds.

At the end she says I realized how far I had come and it felt good. The same thing happened to me in all my career work. I wanted to be in the movie special effects business my whole life and eventually found myself on a scuba trip with a bunch of the guys who had made The Abyss, who happened to be my new co workers in the effects business. And I said to myself, wow, I made it here and I'm diving with the guys who made The Abyss, how did I do this? The point being, there is no good feeling like the success of following your passion, and I feel sorry for people who have not been able to or who have never tried.

Wonderful story! Thank you for making this video. I want to try freediving and I have found a club in my town. Nowadays I find more interesting freediving to explore beaches, see fish and take photos, more than competing for going deeper than other freedivers. But who knows? Perhaps when I practise it for a long time I want to compete. I am a music teacher and I want something new. I everyone can get bored even of what we like most and I'm always trying new things.

LOL. You're familiar with the old "saw" .."takes a thief to recognize another thief?" I, too, am a drone pilot and videographer. I know what it takes to pull off what you did. The ultimate aim is to film with a drone in such a way that no one knows you're "flying a camera." You are a master of this. It took me a few ticks before I said: "wait a min...that's a drone." That is the hardest thing to pull of when filming with one. WELL DONE Sir. You are a master of that art.

The crystal clear river she is swimming in is beautiful. I believe that is in central Florida. Does anyone know where that is?
