Actor Ashley Judd has said she believes Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein sabotaged her career after she refused his advances.
“I was not frightened of Harvey Weinstein and I think that was why he blackballed me,” she told BBC Hardtalk's Stephen Sackur.
“I think that is why he blacklisted me and did unfortunately as we know now such a successful job sabotaging my career,” she added.
Weinstein has denied these allegations and any accusations of non-consensual sex.

I agree with her that when someone has wronged you like this, you don't know who to tell. Who gives a dam, will believe you and support you, has the power or strength to help hold the guy accountable, etc. Some of the nasty comments below illustrate why victims don't come forward. For more abusive people to weigh in.

cary bary Nah, I'd much rather see what the Internet is really like, rather than pretending that such people do not exist. People say to avoid the comment section on certain RU-vid channels, I say, do not. See how fucked up it can get, because without seeing that, one can get the mistaken belief that Humanity has gotten rid of its old prejudices and claim that there are no flaws left in our society. In this specific comment section, one thing I do see is a lack of something that few people seem to have these days- empathy.

Okay I'm disgusted by all this victim blaming, unsurprisingly mostly from men who can't acknowledge their privilege that they have never had to feel so powerless and dehumanised. Instead of saying things like "SHE could have spoken up, SHE knew what she was getting into SHE choose to work on that film" how about thinking about "HE sabotaged her career because she tried to say something, HE made women feel powerless and afraid to speak up, HE decided to abuse his power and sexually assault women". Not to mention the fact that she did try to speak up, no one listened. And also why is this her responsibility?! She was a victim of harassment, she was almost a victim of sexual abuse, she did her best to shed light on it and no one wanted to hear it. How a victim deals with an assault is NO ONE else's business or place to judge. That person is not suddenly responsible for anyone else who's assaulted by the same person because she was too afraid to speak up. You know who IS responsible, HIM. HE harassed her, HE sexually abused and assaulted women, HE chose to abuse his power and behave disgustingly. That behaviour is his responsibility and no one else's. Why is today's society so inclined to victim blame? Why should a woman have to be put in a position where either she gets assaulted and harassed, speaks up about it, jeopardises her career, gets victim blamed, ignored and looses jobs, or she keeps quiet because she's afraid, or a doesn't want to do something that may impact her career, then when it's SAFE for her to come forward she does and gets victim blamed for not coming forward earlier, even though NO ONE listened. That's not a fair scenario. No one should have to accept sexual harassment in order to have a successful career. No one should be put in that position AT ALL. Instead of going around shitting all over women who are brave enough to come forward about a terrible experience how about focusing on PREVENTING this situation happening in the future? How a focusing on HIS wrong doings, on blaming the ACTUAL ABUSER not his victims? Please turn victim blaming society around. Acknowledge that it is a problem, and be part of the solution How a victim responds to bring abused/assaulted is for no one else to judge. If a woman keeps working, had a successful career and a happy life that does not mean that she didn't suffer, that does not mean that she doesn't get the right to speak up about her experience. Why does that fact that her life didn't grind to a halt mean that she doesn't deserve to stand up for herself? If she didn't feel safe to speak before and does now we should congratulate her and SUPPORT her for feeling able to do so. Not pick apart every detail of her life and decide "she obviously wasn't abused because she still worked on ____ film". She was strong, she managed to continue with her life and she does not deserve to be criticized for it. Thank you Ashley Judd for coming forward, for doing your best when you could and well done for being so brave in such an awful situation.

Living Zebra I'm already beginning to regret that I am engaging you, but let me try anyway. I am just a guy without any real "power" or position of authority. EXAMPLE 1: If I decide to rape you, will you go to the police? Would going to police be an easy decision for you, or would you consider your options carefully for 20 or 30 years? Why would it be so easy for a woman to report me, but not someone with position of authority? Do you seriously believe Weinstein controlled LAPD? Prosecutors? Judges? Cops and prosecutors LOVE taking down the powerful! EXAMPLE 2: Is there any scenario where I can somehow manipulate you into sex? If no, why not? Why, according to you, it is so easy for powerful men to manipulate women into sex? All these powerful men have - compared to me - is the promise of money, career, and fame. IN EXCHANGE FOR SEX. I genuinely do not understand why it so easy for me to turn down sex in exchange for these benefits, but according to you IT IS HORRIBLY DIFFICULT FOR WOMEN. Why???

dmitriy40 I know that my comment makes me come across as a bit intense and I'm sorry for that. Thank you for responding in with a question and not a insult, The question is very valid and I'll be happy to answer, but I do need to say that I'm answering for me and only me, I do nothing speak for any other woman. If that were to happen no I don't think I would have gone to the police, certainly not straight away. I would be afraid of victim blaming (which I have experienced before), of judgement and I would be more focused on making myself safe as I know it would have a severe impact on my mental (and probably physical) health. I would hope that I would feel supported enough and brave enough to report it, but I would be very afraid and if I were alone or felt I couldn't confide what had happened to anyone close to me I may not feel able to do that. It would also depend on the situation, if I had met you before and knew who you were it's more likely I would go forward as going through a police report for rape/sexual assault/abuse is very difficult, it's often damaging to mental health, it can get in the way of your recovery and be very stressful. I might not feel strong enough to put myself through that unless I felt confident it was going to be a conviction. If I were to go through months of answering difficult questions and reliving the trauma, pinning my hopes on getting the rapist convicted only for it all to go up in flames/no one be found guilty that would have a huge impact on my recovery, whereas just leaving it and processing it first, allowing myself to heal and get on with my life might be all I feel capable of doing and may be a healthier route. If then I find out another woman had been assaulted by you I would feel much more confident and safe to come forward with that person to make a claim against you. So it's really not an easy/one answer question, it's highly dependent on situation and the people involved, their support system, how much information they have, their mental health ect ect. As for why it's different with Harvey, largely it's due to how deaf people are to claims made against those in power and making money. Though he had a reputation for being a bit sleazy, not everyone was aware to what degree that was and one way or another ended up in an awful situation and we're assaulted/abused by him. Each of those women will have felt isolated, singled out and vulnerable. They will have felt powerless, just as anyone in that situation (regardless of who the abuser is) would feel. Now all the reasons I stated before for not coming forward/being afraid to do so are still valid, except now you're up against a very rich, well loved filmmaker. Someone who employed and mentored countless celebrities, who will all vouch for him, there will be those who want to protect him because they are working with him and will lose money ect ect. Now if you're one woman who's just been assaulted and is feeling more vulnerable than ever, do you really want to put yourself through a huge legal battle against someone like that? Do you want to risk the possible end of your career of it goes wrong? A career you've worked for your whole life. Maybe you have children and a family that you don't want to put through such a difficult process. You would feel insignificant and powerless. So yes that was an option for any of those women, but if they decided not to do that and focus on their personal recovery and health then that's a completely understandable thing, that doesn't make them responsible for him harming other women, that responsibility will always be with him and any friends/co-workers ect who were fully aware of his habits. But similarly if enough women found each other and talked about their experiences and get strong enough to come forward TOGETHER it's a much safer, more secure feeling. They would feel more confident to speak up and the balance tips more in their favour. It also becomes less personal, there's safety in numbers, names are less likely to be leaked (if you didn't want the public/co-workers ect to know it was you who reported him) because it's a group of people as opposed to one person. Yes it would be great if these women came forward sooner, but it's not like there's a FB group you join after you get assaulted by Harvey Weinstein, it's not a topic that gets thrown around in conversation. You have to be brave enough to bring it up, to ask someone if they've had the same experience, and that takes a lot of courage. I hope this explain a little more about what I meant

dmitriy40 And as for your second question, I want to make something clear, no I'm not a naive idiot, yes I fully believe that there will have been multiple women who were aware that Harvey would trade sex for work/money ect ect and will have voluntarily DECIDED to use that. But that's consensual, that's not a problem and that's not the situation I'm discussing. I'm taking about women who simply want to have successful acting careers, are offered parts in films ect, who agree to it and are then assaulted or abused. That is where they have to make a decision that no one should have to make. Report him and go through all the stuff mentioned before, not report him and try to avoid him, hoping that he will not do anything to you again, or leave and give up a great career opportunity, paid work and piss off a very influential member of the industry. THAT'S what I have issues with. That's the position I am furious that so many women end up in (not just in this case but in all manor of jobs) and I hate that women have to decide on their career or their sexual safety.

Firstly she did speak up, secondly you are completely disregarding how dehumanising, powerless and cornered you for when you're in the situation. The safety of every woman is not her responsibility. She was harassed and her career was jeopardised, she should not have been in that situation at all, why are you putting any blame on her? HE harassed her HE sexualities abused and assaulted women HE should be blamed. How those women dealt with being in that position is not something anyone had to right to judge. Everyone handles things differently. If they kept silent and just looked after themselves and tried to recover that is a normal human reaction. HE is responsible for putting those women at risk, not the women. STOP VICTIM BLAMING

This is how victims of prejudice feel and tomorrow, the world will just pretend like it's shocking. When Harvey isn't the sole criminal, it's this wider society that encompasses our world. Where women like Ashley Judd would pay with consequences for speaking up. At least she was insanely beautiful and had a powerful family. But even that didn't prevent from the pain of losing a career. She seems to be bearing up well. If she wasn't beautiful or smart yet had the talent to deserve those movies, she wouldn't even be entertained during this movement. Fyi, as if misogyny isn't a prejudice. There is so much open prejudice against the lgbtq+ and non-eurocentric populations. And tomorrow, they are going to act like they were never a part of it.

What are you talking about? It wasn’t until 2017 for two basically unknown actresses to file the initial complaints against the hollywood rabbi or as Meryl Streep referred to him “god “,Harvey Weinstein. Try to imagine how many other women were abused by that snake between’97 and 2017 . You people worship the golden calves placed in front of you religiously by the very same people. Hollywood should be leveled .
