Kelly Hall-Tompkins - Violin I
Mark O'Connor - Violin II
"Ashokan Farewell" is Jay Ungar's composition and modern day classic. His own recording of the piece was used in Ken Burn's "Civil War" PBS Television Series in 1990. "Approximately 40 million viewers watched it during its initial broadcast, making it the most-watched program ever to air on PBS." This two-violin version was arranged by Mark O'Connor and Pinchas Zukerman, transcribed from their 1992 recording of it on O'Connor's "Heroes" album for the O'Connor Method Book IV and its companion CD "MOC 4"
This video is the actual footage from the professional CD recording session. Violin students can see the performers as they record the very rendition that Mark O'Connor authored for his Method and is included in Book IV. O'Connor and Lark played through a matched pair of Neumann M49 microphones circa 1953, the very two microphones that O'Connor used for his multi Grammy nominated "Heroes" album in 1992, pairing him with his own violin heroes.
Recorded February, 5th, 2014 at Sean Swinney Studios, New York City

My husband and I watched "The Civil War" series the year it was initially broadcast, and for both of us it was an unforgettable experience . The following year I lost him at the young age of 46. This song brings back memories of our time together. Thank you for your presentation of Ashokan Farwell in all its beauty and poignancy.

Found his "Heroes" CD on a long road trip to decide my future, and it hit like a brick. Drove almost 800 miles with the O'Connor/Zukerman on repeat. Long, lonely roads south from Montana to Nevada, but the tears were done and the decision made when I got there. Thank you, Mark and Pinchas, for a light into the darkness. Kelly-fabulous job on this one, and so glad I made those decisions back in 2005. Also deep thanks to Jay Unger and Molly Mason for this one, and my favorite of all time, "The Mountain House." So glad I lived in the same time period these exquisite musicians were around, and will see that my children see the love....

This was the last song My Dad learned to play before He died. He started playing at the age of 12 and played upto His death in 1999 and was born in 1921. Played at dances for a long time as an old time fiddler and repaired fiddles but didn't make any of them. Tahnks for sharing this as it brings back fond memories and a little bit of sadness as well but its all good. Take care andkeep on playing wonderful music as long as you can and keep bringing inspiration and education to the next generation of musicians.

To me this has always been the most beautiful, yet sorrowful fiddle tune ever. I can hardly hold back tears every time I hear it. It is on the list of songs to be played at my funeral....not that I want people to cry at my passing, I don't, I just want anyone who may be there who has never heard it to hear it....beautiful!!!

This is the most beautiful and haunting rendition of Ashokan Farewell. It speaks to my Scottish roots and we played it at my darling husband's funeral as our sons carried his coffin into the Church. It spoke our goodbyes to him so eloquently and listening to it again brings me great comfort. Thank you.

Beautiful. Perhaps one of the most evocative, haunting melodies ever. Would that this duo's memorial be played in the quietude of the closing day at Antietam Bridge, Gettysburg burial grounds, and above all the resting Americans lying low in Northern and Southern battle fields. Americans of the post Civil War would surely weep as we hear it in this twenty-first century.

This is music that sooth's my soul. ... The haunting melody reaches to the inside and the sounds of the fiddle remind me of my early years growing up..the love of my parent's teaching me to love my Southern Heritage..they are gone home to be with God now, and attacks from all sides against my beloved Southern Heritage. I can lose myself in this and remember times long ago. Thank You . You have touched my heart.

+Bettie Russo I'm a Southerner and value my heritage. Unless I've missed something, the only attacks I've heard against our Southern heritage have been aimed at the Confederacy and what it represented. It stood for a system that would have enslaved Kelly Hall-Tompkins, the lady violinist on this beautiful number. I do not consider that system part of my heritage.

davehshs I'm glad to hear it. I also love the part of the south that stands for manners/ graciousness, kind regard for neighbors, love of family etc. We have to be honest though and accept that slavery was bad, racism and terrorist groups like the kkk are bad and some members of our community and family were racists. We're afraid to tell the truth because it's painful to accept that we were lied to. There's nothing gallent about owning other oeople, attending hanging parties or feeling superior for nothing you've earned; just your skin color. Truly it's absurd, but i do love this music, sweet tea and being about peolple who have good manners.

Bettie Russo i too g1et lost in the beauty of this music and it's superb performance here. My parents also taught me about my Southern Heritage and let me say some of it is to be proud of, much of it so disgraceful that not even the most divne art form (music) lose me.

john smith i watched the ken burns series. i don't think this piece was associated with the attrocities of the war. in my mind it represents the inevitability of the conflict, the struggle that ensued for the soul of the country. yes it does represent the great sorrow that accompanied the war, but it also represents the hope that arose with it. the series itself tries to balance the role the south played in the war. it points out the villany that slavery was, but also tries to approach the struggle that people like lee faced when they opposed the war. but yet fought for what they considered their homes. the piece also represents, for me, a transition from these united states to "the" united states of america. yes the south should be proud of its heritage, and that heritage consists of its music, food. customs and people. But it also consists of the dark past it has had. That part is not the whole of it, but is a significant part of it. I think since acknowledgement of that doesn't happen, there are still a lot of prejudices that come from a vast majority of people in the south. Not everyone of course.

Jay Unger really knocked one out of the park with this composition!!! I also remember hearing it on Ken Burns masterpiece, "Civil War" and thought at the time it was one of the most beautiful and haunting pieces of music that I'd ever heard. It fit so perfectly with the narration, you couldn't help being moved by it. This version is wonderful, too. Mark O'Connor is a master musician.

I took a violin class when I was in college. I was around 25 then. I could play really simple songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but it sounded like I was stepping on a cat's tail when I was playing. You cannot fake it on a violin. Experience shows up.

The sun is sinking low in the sky above Ashokan The pines and the willows know soon we will part There's a whisper in the wind of promises unspoken And a love that will always remain in my heart My thoughts will return to the sound of your laughter The magic of moving as one And a time we'll remember long ever after The moonlight and music and dancing are done Will we climb the hills once more? Will we walk the woods together? Will I feel you holding me close once again? Will every song we've sung stay with us forever? Will you dance in my dreams or my arms until then? Under the moon the mountains lie sleeping Over the lake the stars shine They wonder if you and I will be keeping The magic and music, or leave them behind
