I think the reason why many people are critical of non-veg served in puja is simply out of ignorance. Remember this thumb rule- 1) Maa Durga/Kali/Tara are tantrik, shaktha devis. In Tantra they have vamachara and dakshinachar paddathis. They simply follow the tantric shastras which permit or even demand non-veg to be served. 2) Krishna, Vittala, etc follow the Vaishnava sampradaya which strictly forbid meat or alchol to be served as per vaishnava shastras. Both are different sampradayas and paddathis being followed as per the respective shastras. The confusion comes when we start mixing vaishnava sampradaya to a Tantric devi. It shouldn't be done and makes no sense. Hope this clears any doubts why non-veg is served on astami for devi.

A few words about Sandhi Puja. Sandhi has multiple meanings, one of which is junction. This puja of Ma Durga is performed at the junction of Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami (from 24 minutes before the end of Maha Ashtami (or Mahashtami) and upto 24 minutes from the start of Maha Navami, as the lady explained. This 48 minute puja is performed to Ma Mahamaya, who turned into Ma Chamunda to slay two Asuras named Chanda and Munda, according to the Puranas. Chanda and Munda are believed to be the evil instincts in humans which must be sacrificed. Hence Bali Daan (sacrifice) of animals or vegetables are performed during Sandhi Puja, to symbolise the sacrifice of evil. It is believed that Lord Ram also performed Sandhi Puja before his ultimate battle where he killed Ravana.

In Odisha we still practice bali during Durga pooja as bhog , This is our tradition which cannot be banned. A few years back some English literate collector babu came and tried to stop, so people took a step that and told him that if you tries stop this then we will first give you as bali then other, from that date no Babu ever dared to stop this practice.

The way you patiently and intently listen to the other person speak makes you all the more likeable. A Bengali myself, it seems I've revisted the essence of Durga Puja in a different way through your eyes, very heartwarming nonetheless. Keep up the good work Sir.

Different cultures, follow different rituals, celebrating the same festival in our country... Durga puja, (being very close to me)... i ve enjoyed the episode n got a deeper insight into the celebrations... Whatever the stories, worshipping the 'Shakti', kindles tht 'something' which empowers,, which can be seen in such an expression of free will, be it dancing, singing, rejoicing... N the sitar too :)

In Odisha we offer grilled fish and mutton to Devi Durga apart from this several fish items are offered such as macha besara, dahi macha, macha ghanta etc East Indian culture full of shakta parampara. But Odisha is a place where there is Shakta, Vaishnav, Shaiva and Ganpatya as Well In Puri Jagannath temple there is a shakti peeth called as maa Vimala only in navami in durga puja after the doors of jagannath are closed Bali of fish and meat is offered infront of vimala and before Jagannath's doors are opened early in the morning everything is cleaned. This portrays the coexistence of traditions in one temple.

For those who are going to be angry/sad/ashtonished after seeing non veg in Devi aradhna, the fundamental of Sanatan is "Ekam sat, Vipra bahudha vadanti" which means "There is only one truth, knowlegable persons define it in various ways". East Indians mithila part of Bihar , Bengal , Assam( west part and sichar) they are all shakiti worshipers . Fish is a part of their culture and food habits. It's considered auspicious and therefore people revere it a lot. Many people in mithila , Bihar still cook fish without onion and garlic only with tomato spices and mustard paste. Its their culture. Bengalis are dharmik . They have their own Niramish and Amish dishes. They follow a very unique culture . Their food can be pro vegetarian ( without onion and garlic) and pro non- veg according to their culture, believes and festivals. I am not a Bengali but i have gained much knowledge about their culture from my friends and RU-vid video sources., especially about the east Indians. Note: Bengalis are the third largest ethnic group of the world after Han Chinese and Arabs.

Sandhi Puja is a special worship in Durga Puja , where Durga is worshipped as Chamunda . The ritual includes invoking the Chamunda Goddess and then offering her bed to sit then Prasad to eat and new clothes etc. as it's very fierce form of Goddess the puja has to be completed within of last 24 mins of Asthami and first 24 mins Navami. The ritual of offering 108 bloomed lotus and 108 enlightened pradeep is practiced from the time of Lord Ram. The Purana according to which Durga Puja rituals are done clearly states the worship was done originally in order to slay Ravana by Lord Ram himself by awakening the godess in untimely phase of the year.

sandhi puja ke samay par uss 48 minutes, maa chaamunda ka pooja kiya jata hai. aur unke pooja ke liye hi bali hota hai. kahin pe paantha (goat) bali hota hai. aur baki jagah pe chalkumro, kela, kheera, ganna ye sab sabzi aur phal bali chadhaya jaata hai.

As far as I know…Sandhi Puja has a different meaning than what that girl explained. Actually it is said that mahisasura had a few “Vardana” like one of them being that he will never be killed by any man (heaven or earth), which is why the incarnation of a female killed him. Another vardana being that he won’t be killed on any tithi (date). Which is why Ma Durga had to kill him during the transition phase from one tithi to another. Thus she killed him when Ashtami tithi was ending and Navami tithi was coming in. This phase is called the sandhi kkhan…and this happens to be the main puja during these 4 days. This is when the Devi killed the Asura, and good triumphed over evil.

Why is bali stopped, my kuladevi still has bali pratha of buffalo during dasara puja, this hindutvawadi baniye will fight muslims when they cant even see a chicken getting slaughtered

Actually nonvegetarian bhoga during Navratri was common in North India also before Pashubali (animal sacrifice) was banned by courts and governments in the 90s. Just remove the ban on Pashubali in North India and we will again see nonvegetarian bhoga in Hindu temples of North India just like before the 90s.
