I was thinking the same thing. Ashton seemed to be doing well and smart enough to make himself successful. For them to send that letter out of the blue and for no apparent reason seems like something else is going on. It's just odd...

He was already found guilty. They literally said it in the letter. They were asking not for him to be found innocent, they were asking for leniency in his sentencing. And even if that was the case, it would be extremely stupid to defend someone before you yourself know what happened. You can spend a lot of time around people and never know the bad things they have done in their lives. Years.

This would make you question any normal person, not to mention someone who has witnessed the effects of this crime first hand when he went on those fbi raids or his work in this field in general. The way he worded it in the letter made it even worse, so questioning his honest efforts from the last years is definitely very understandable when he actively tried to protect a convicted perpetrator of the crime he says he is fighting against.
