In this video, we will be discussing the ASI533MC Pro camera and how to maintain proper image scale for astrophotography. We will explore the features of the camera and provide tips on achieving optimal image scale and "extending" your focal length by using a smaller sensor.
While this does not change the native focal length of your telescope it does provide a field of view equivelant to longer focal length telescopes with no impact to your focal ratio for capturing stunning astrophotography images. This is often referred to "the crop factor" or "Focal length multiplier". If you would like to learn more about it here is a link!

you just made my day with this video..... i just bout this the other day to replace my nikon z6..... i was told by many that i had to modify that camera to get into astro..... but i depended on it too much for my regular work.... so i purchased this camera instead ....... you made my day with this video

Thank you so much for making this video! As someone who's still learning, you've helped fill in several blanks for me. I use my ZWO Asi533mc in conjunction with my Skywatcher Esprit 100ED triplet and my Celestron 8se, depending on what I'm imaging and I've been thrilled with some of my final results when I get lucky enough to do everything properly! Here's a quick tip for anyone else who images with the Celestron sct.. in my opinion the focusing knob on some of these Scopes is so bad it almost makes it impossible to capture decent deep sky or planetary images. I was able to resolve this by buying a cheap rubber 1" furniture pad, drilling a hole in the center such that it will fit tightly on the shaft of the focus knob, removing the original Focus knob, pushing the rubber pad all the way onto the focus shaft until it reaches the body of the telescope, and finally replacing the original Focus knob. This gives me finer detail over the focus and thanks to the extra friction on the furniture pad, the focus doesn't jump all over the place anytime there's the slightest vibration.

I think the beginning of the video is misleading - you are not extending the focal length or zooming in, you are just cropping the field of view. So if you take the 2600mc pro which has the same pixel size but a aps-c size sensor you will have the same resolution and details but you'll get more FOV with the 2600. Wether you crop on it to get a close up is up to you. Love the 533mc pro, have since 6 months now and never enjoyed the hobby this much:)

The scope hasn't changed so the fl is the same as it was. The effective fl is different though with because different pixel/sensor size. Rayliegh limit is possibly not as relevant as it used to be though because of software cheats ;)

Thanks for the effort making these videos. You have done an excellent job. You were the first to start this series on the 103APO when it first came out and is why I purchased one. I really like the bahtinov mask you created for it. May I ask were you got the print file for it. Thanks.

The 533 is my first camera and has been my only camera, being a astrophotography peasant and all, loll! I wasn’t a huge fan of the square sensor, but it’s starting to grow on me for sure. I’m also excited to mount it on my new Quattro F/4 150p! Thanks again for your videos, I’m glad I found your channel. You deliver helpful information in a way that I can understand.

That's great to hear! And thanks for sharing your story. It's such a great cam. I've been using it quite a bit during galaxy season. Took me a while to get used to the square sensor as well. I think it's cool now 😆

@@astronotna speaking of galaxy season, that’s why I bought the Quattro 150. My first year shooting with the 533 and my WO GR71. I realized why people end up going bigger lol!

That’s pretty much the exact same setup that I have. Cool thing with the 533 is I don’t need the flattener at native. Stars round to the corners. Saved me $200 till I move to a bigger sensor. Love shooting at F4 with the reducer too. Two APO scopes for $1300!

Thank you! I also have the Askar 103 with 1x FF and a 533MC pro. I noticed the moon was pretty bright. Did you use any filter while imaging? I have the Optolong L-quad, and I get great images from light polluted skies with it.
@astronotna
@astronotna 2 месяца назад
So far I've only used a uvir with it. I have the D1 and D2 filter set but I'm waiting for nebula season to return to try them. I was surprised what I got with the Moon out like that at 240 sec. I'm so used to mono I was curious. I do have an Lpro as well but now I'm questioning if I need it lol.

Awesome! I’m actually heading to Cherry springs tonight with the 103 and 533 to image the crescent nebula. I’m using an L-extreme filter.

I own a 533,294 and a 2600. I probably use the 533 more than any other. The square chip size can take some getting used to to framing but it is a great camera.

Thanks for another excellent video.... I'm planning to get a cooled ZWO camera to go with my three telescopes, AM5 and ASIAIR. I have two refractors: a 60mm (300mm fl) and an 80mm (430mm fl), plus a C6 with a 6.3 reducer at 945mm. Would the ASI533 MC Pro be a good choice? If not, what? Thanks for your consideration, Michael

I think it is a good all around cam. On my C6 it's slightly oversampled around .80 but nothing blurx or astrosharp couldn't work out.

I've had great results on my reduced C6. As seen in this video, it pulls amazing details out of galaxies.

I have had my 533MC pro for 6 months, and the subs and darks have zero amp glow. with my redcat 51 it is undersampled at over 3 arc sec/ pixel,, but this is mitigated by dithering and a drizzle in dss. with my askar 120 it is at 0.9 arc sec/ pixel which is the limit i would want to go as guiding would become more difficult

Umm, You can get the exact same effect by cropping the larger sensor's camera to the smaller sensor's size in PixInsight (as long as each camera's pixel's are the same size, if not then you have to do an image rescale first to match pixel sizes and then crop). The IMX533 1" is just a smaller version of the IMX571 APS-C
@astronotna
@astronotna 2 месяца назад
Indeed I touched on that subject at 12:59. However not everyone can afford the larger sensors to do that.

Great video! You mentioned that the 533 extends FL three times; what would a 224MC provide? I have both. Also, where are you getting this number?
@astronotna
@astronotna 2 месяца назад
You can use any crop factor calculator online. If you google it there are lots to choose from. It will give you how many times your crop will be based on a full frame sensor 35MM and it will give you the equivelant focal length /FOV you will get from it. I believe you have a 1/3" sensor in the 224MC Same as my 120 I am sure it is around 7X crop factor. Alternatively you can take 35MM / you sensor's diagnol length = your crop factor then multiply that number by your focal length to get your your equivelant focal length / FOV. I estimated my crop since to me it seemed it was cropped in more than my 183 around 2.7X. I felt it was easier to explain it in whole numbers lol. Hope this helps you out in some way.

I’m sorry to point this out, but there’s a big conceptual mistake in the first part of this video. Given any focal length, a smaller sensor will produce a smaller field of view (FOV) than a bigger sensor. That is completely different of shooting at a longer focal length. If you have a longer focal length AND a bigger sensor, you may have the same FOV as the smaller sensor with a shorter focal length. Bottom line: There’s no increasing at all in focal length by choosing a smaller sensor. Just a change in the FOV.

OK guys if you have powerful pc + optics that support larger sensors + money do not get small sensor camera. you DO NOT increase your focal length you just precrop the FOV. if you have bigger sensor with same pixel size you just get larger area of the sky with out losing resolution. if you want you can crop it later and get rid of unwanted space and you can use same setup for larger targets. This is a common big misunderstanding that you close in for free.NO . Personally I have 533 and it is not very flexable camera. it is 8 mp and you are limited. Biggest pro is more resonable price when you compare with zwo 2600 mc or mm. If you have the money and no storage shortage get a 2600 mc version. However if you want to get any gear just do reserch for weeks and spend you money you won't get easy answers about compatibility with you system and what you want to do. deep space objects are not always tiny. you want all flexibility you can have.
