I had to eat a lot of insects, snakes, and of course rice fields rats to survive during the evil Pol Pot genocide. We were sent from Phnom Penh City to dig cannals and dam along Pursat River next to Battambang Province. Most of my family members did not survive and only two of us made it out of 12 . I'm very surprised that they still eat these things today. Cambodia has come a long way since the civil war was officially ended in 1998. I've returned to visit my sole surviving sister every year for the last ten years since my retirement from US. Peace from Khmer in Minnesnowta ✌️
Ur survival foods turned into the comfort foods of my childhood…my grandmother came here wit my aunts n uncles in the early 80s…from the civil war ur generation went thru I learned so much…biggest thing I learned was to forage for food…if anything happened in the USA I would b fine when it comes to foods cuz I’ve eaten everything before
@@wallacedavis3110 idk about him, it depends on what pet you have you will avoid those food conscious or unconsciously. As for me I'm a cat person, so I only tried dog before and it got distinctive taste.
@@wallacedavis3110 I have not but I’m sure it’s similar to chicken or pork…my favorite is crickets or tarantula…tarantula tastes like a fresh water crab
@@wallacedavis3110 I did not see a single dog running around during that hardship. Rumors said Pol Pot cadre doesn't like dog and they killed all of them so it's easy for them to spy on us during the night. I grew up with pet dogs after my returning to the city at the end of 1979, I couldn't find my dogs. It was very sad😭
This is the 'Best Ever Food Review' style I fell in love with years ago! This is raw, talented, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, taking risks in off the beaten path places to tell a food story ... Keep up the amazing work, Sonny! 👏👏👏
@Austin_Jason2stop spamming for subs. 2 videos and 2 shorts with your shirt off? Make content and stay consistent and you will get to your goal. Also what happened to the 30k subs goal you spammed before?
Please go to a real therapist. Betterhelp is not made from licensed therapist's and should not be promoted. They got in trouble and had to remove the part where it said they have licensed therapist's, and selling your info from the questions they ask. I dont know if they put it back but dont go to them. Almost all reviews i have seen has been very bad.
@@MichaelCapps-b2d neither. I hate therapy. But for people who need it should get the help they deserve. Betterhelp is scum, the little i know is enough to not like them. One of the videos i watched on was a soggy cereal on how bad they are.
I am a Cambodian. I appreciate your visit and introduce to the world their unique cuisines which consist largely of herbs, spices, and roots very different from any other nation in cooking.
@@Sniperboy5551 Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are indoctrinated to think rats are gross. You will never swing the masses to switch from cows, pigs and chickens to eating rats. It doesn't help either that rat farms such as this one hardly exist in the US. Ostrich is literally amazing, and way healthier and more sustainable than chicken, but try as I may, I couldn't find it at a reasonable price that would convince me to completely replace chicken with it.
Just came back from Cambodia about a month and a half ago. The food was the best I’ve ever had. Everything was caught, killed, or pulled out the earth that day and the way they grill over a wood fire gives everything such a good char flavor you immediately notice when you come back stateside (and I’m Texan!). The biggest observation I made was that they eat the animal whole for EVERY meal. I’m no doctor, but I think eating as much organ meats and as I did over there attributed to my joints feelings better than ever. And my girlfriend swears it’s healed her psoriasis. I love Cambodia and can’t wait to go back. I encourage anyone to travel and see it especially Angkor Wat which is a masterpiece of a Hindu-Buddhist temple complex.
Did you by chance get to try the rat or ballute not sure if I spelled that correctly but I'm a Florida boy from the swamps and would like to try a bunch of stuff Sonny does and am planning a trip to Cambodia
Ive lived in Cambodia for five years and either youre a f kn liar or you have zero taste buds.. Cambodia food is mediocre at best.. And its not known at all for its ''delicious'' cuisine lol..
In my country some restaurants serve muskrats, it’s sold as “waterkonijn” translates as “water rabbit”. My grandfather used to catch those and prepare them. Pretty tasty and just about free protein.
It's funny in France we call them "lièvre des marais", who means marsh rabbit. It's not served in restaurant but prepared by some hunter, I have eated it one time and it's pretty good
I love how brutally honest you always are IN THE MOMENT OF CONSUMING the food so they know what displeases you, instead of it being fake just liking their food. Love you bro! Stay safe, STAY HEALTHY!
Sonny, i got nothing but love and respect for you bro. You are brave, adventurous, daring, and you ain't a lil poon. I'd never thought I'd ever say how tempting and delicious a rat looks LOL. I'd definitely try it for sure, looks like it would pair up with some beer really well. It's always very respectable to see foreigners try other cultures food and even enjoying it and spreading kind words. Will be awaiting your next video Sonny. Definitely the best food reviewer exploring the world and trying many dishes and putting them on the map!
Imagine eating til your teeth rot, while simultaneously gaining enough weight to embody another you while continuing to be one. Imagine a world where humans got treated, farmed, and eaten. Like animals, awesome
This Cambodia series with his friend are awesome, for the first time i think this food is worth to try, it looks delicious😋i think its the seasoning and the way they cook it ! Sunny is always very alert and he gives interesting informations 👍charcoal is a must if you eat strange food 🤪i never ever will eat Tarantulas !
This episode was very, as Savi You stated, eye opening. It was educational & made me want to try the rat that you were indulging upon. Excellent. Keep doing what you and your team are doing!
Not revolted by rat meat at all. Absolutely delicious imho! Yes, I'm American living in the USA. Lol. That said, it's not a replacement for beef. Beef can't be replaced. But I'd definitely substitute rat meat for beef once or twice a week, especially if it was affordable! Guinea Pig is another outstanding protein!
Rats and guinea pigs don't have much meat on them. They're not efficient compared to say chicken and rabbit. Those animals have been selectively bred to get meaty on less food. Some day we might develop rat breeds that are as meaty as broiler chickens. And when we do, I want one as a guard dog haha!
I noticed that you do mental awareness month! I respect that! I been going through a lot with this yet I can't get the proper help!! I been a subscriber for a while now and all I asked for is to meet you and travel I will spend my own money depending on where we go unfortunately I'm not successful as most people, but one time would be a good idea not only for me but a city guy from the ghetto willing to do what you do is a blessing to me!!❤
I know these videos are filmed WAY in advance and doesn't necessarily have to be a reference to anything in particular, but the coincidence is too funny. I couldn't help but play the tune in my head when Sonny said the frog got a BBL
I still love how the guy he is with needs help from sonny to explain alot of stuff but this guy definitely deserves some subs either way this man is a big fan of sonny too
Rats are just famous foods in mainland of Southeast Asia , in Myanmar, we eat Farm rat ,( not urban sewer rat) just straight from farm and these rats are mostly get out from underground and eat various crops , so we need to catch them and eat them, 😂but yeah it’s luxury cuisine in southern Myanmar,
When I was a kid I’d spend summers with my grandparents in NC. They were country folks and born in 1899 so tells my age. I remember my grandmother scrambling eggs with pork brains. Along with homemade biscuits and milk no more than an hour or two old that was a breakfast.
Wow! Proud pinoy here living in Germany! Saying the word "Balut" makes mee sooo proud being a Filipino and a southeast asian! I miss eating adobo frogs and frog eggs, as it's part of my childhood memories in the Philippines. Thank you!
I am subconsciously addicted to your show. I will mindlessly put a video on without even thinking. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your show because I love that you incorporate the lifestyle and heritage of the places and people you do the video with.
Oh my god!! I can’t believe that you have tried all of these foods in your all Cambodian videos! I can say no one has ever shown these foods to the world!! All of these are my favorite foods! You made me crave for these food!!
Sonny your punchlines have me cracking up laughing. Absolutely brilliant episode. I think it's great now you bring the raw footage to us of how other cultures live
I have to admit, those roasted and grilled rats looked damned good! I recall watching people eat a rat on an episode of Survivor. At first, they were disgusted at the thought of it but when they each had a taste, they laughed out loud because what they thought was disgusting was actually delicious and they were urging the guy who caught it to catch more.
What hits me hard was at the end where they showed extra scenes he said if you had rice you'd have it with rice.... Im asian and that would be something we would do 😂
You will be surprise. I had a few friends here in America tried. Kid you not. They liked it! Just try it with Cambodian sauce and you will be fine. Dont think too much that its a bird or even stare at it😂.
Ahhhh I’m so jealous!!!! Stuffed frog is one of the best bbq dishes…my yay still makes it for me for my birthday as a gift…she will make a few dozen so if I ever crave them I jus go in the freezer n grab some…soooo tasty
