Follow along on my Leica adventure as I capture the beauty and majesty of Myanmar's elephants for a cover story in Smithsonian magazine. From trekking through the jungle to getting up close and personal with these magnificent creatures in a small elephant village, this was an unforgettable experience. Join me on this behind-the-scenes journey and witness the incredible bond between humans and elephants in Myanmar and what's being done to rescue them.

Good idea. I like seeing how you approach an assignment and of course the elegant images resulting from it. Also, although some may find this boring, I do try to learn from what lenses and what settings (EXIF) were used to capture an image Moreover, I also like the Photography Q&As you do once in a while, although the last one you did seems to have gone missing from the YT channel. I’m not on IG. If possible, would be great to see these Q&A sessions on YT too. Regardless, keep up the good work

Don’t beat yourself up with this imposter syndrome, Justin. Your work is the reason why you were chosen and the results are exceptional, paralleling the style you show in your rhino projects. A good way to cure your doubts is to look in the mirror every morning and repeat three times, ‘I am the best and deserve this success.’ I went on a solo photographic assignment to Myanmar last year and soon realised that the western media distort and portray the realities for everyday people living there. It is a wonderful place for a photographer and the people are hugely photogenic. Such a pity that western governments discourage travel to Myanmar.

Stunning, insightful, empathetic images Justin. I particularly like how you capture the textures of the elephant’s skin textures and how they contrast with that of trees and timber. Re elephant welfare, I feel strongly that we shouldn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Sounds like this is a story of hope. Great work! Thanks for taking the risks involved and for sharing. 4:49 by far my favourite! And then I continued watching and have seen many more of my favourites :D Anyway thank you so much for sharing these assignment brake downs because this is the way I would like to go myself and it is a great inspiration, visually but also knowing how things work. It had to be quite a thrilling experience considering shooting with camera without any screen and without the permission but it totally makes sense to do it without it. Btw weren't you sad about the way they used the main image for the cover page? Thanks a lot and take care! Filip from Czech

Did you shoot the entire piece exclusively with 35mm focal length or did you vary the angle of view? Nice images. And the elephant issue also exists in Yunnan province, China. They've had a heard that basically went on a journey and wreaked havoc. The main issue is that there is hardly any wild habitat left for them in Yunnan. Rain forest had to make room for rubber tree plantations...

Beautiful images. Touching story. There's not a RU-vid channel out there quite like yours, Justin. Keep it up! Quick technical question: When shooting, do you primarily shoot in Manual exposure, with Auto features like Auto-ISO or Auto-Shutter, or a combination thereof? If so, what determines which setting you shoot in? Thanks!
@AskMOTT
@AskMOTT 4 месяца назад
I always shoot in Manual mode as I feel that's what works for me but I just like to control the exposure myself and which aperture and shutter I choose depends on what I'm shooting so a lot of factors play into that.

We have a tough but kind lady here in Florida who runs a ranch called Two Tails Ranch for elephants. She basically just lets them roam and live life. One elephant likes to paint on canvas and they sell them for the ranch. Others you can hand feed. And one she trusts for rides. She also has programs where you can stay there and help take care of the elephants and learn about them. Incredible place!

I look at your stuff and am reminded that this is the kind of work that can be done. You do have the touch and even though you say you culled these from thousands you did wind up with these. You did not have all chaff. I always enjoy the connections between the beasts, two legged and four legged, it speaks to something higher within us. And you have the consistent discipline and talent to rise for the early shoot and linger for the late shoot. It shows. Thanks.

There is always the interest in accompanying you on shoots to see "what" and "how" and the vicarious experience of the actual event. Most of us will never be great shooters nor will we travel to exotic places to shoot. So doing it via video can be hugely satisfying and also a way to learn by kibitzing. Just what you see and do in your area is exciting. There need be no jet travel involved. You are our window on another world or worlds. That's my two cents and worth about what you paid for it.@@AskMOTT

Another good video describing how you go about such jobs, with great photos resulting. I'm a bit curious that you use such fast shutter speeds with relatively static subjects at the cost of high ISO. Perhaps high ISO is just not an issue with Leica cameras, I wouldn't know.
@AskMOTT
@AskMOTT 4 месяца назад
I prefer the look of wide open so I often shoot at f1.4 and need fast shutters to compensate, hope that makes sense Rodney and thanks for your question.

New subscriber. Thank you for all the content “Other people doubt me but I shouldn’t doubt myself” Gold. When you are shooting in quickly changing lighting conditions, do you put anything on auto? I shoot manually but, do you ever use auto ISO or auto shutter speed? Your last 5 images and your camera settings make me wonder this. Beautiful story and images.

Fantastic photos. Would love to see a video on the technical and editing side of this: how you deal with blown highlights on the backlit shots; how you choose manual settings for each shot, etc.. Also, any artist without self-doubt is a crappy artist.

I saw a video of African farmer who had similar experiences with elephants raiding their crops as a convenient and dependable food source. As a solution, they used the elephant's natural fear of bees as a deterrent. The farmers incorporated bee hives on the wire fencing sling the perimeter of the crops. Whenever the perimeter is over run the bee hives are designed to be the 1st point of failure; releasing the bees to repel the elephants. This solution allows nature to do the heavy lifting. Not to mention the harvesting of free honey adds to their farms bottom line. If the same holds true for Asian elephants, please share this with your friends in Myanmar. It could make their deterrent methods more humane.
