Compared to other cities in the region such as Hanoi, Jakarta, Bangkok or Yangon, Kuala Lumpur is still very young.
The same is true within Malaysia. From the 15th to the 17th centuries, when Melaka or Penang flourished, Kuala Lumpur did not have a name at that time.
In the nineteenth century, tin became a source of raw materials sought by Western empires to serve the development of industry and transportation. In 1857, while Malaysia was still occupied by the British Empire, a group of Chinese miners went up the Klang River in search of tin mines as a life-changing opportunity. They reached the confluence with the Gombak River, built a small village of settlement and mining. This is where the origin of the landmark Kuala Lumpur means the intersection of two muddy rivers. Just like Vietnam has the place name Nga Ba Sinh, Kuala Lumpur also has the same meaning. Initially this shady area was under the control of groups of so-called "bloody" men and the British did not care and did not have any central authority to control order.
When forest malaria and sectarian purges killed so many people, the British colonial authorities had to step in and create a leader called 'Kapitan' to manage and ensure protect the law.
Kuala Lumpur is located to the west of the Malay Peninsula and is the most populous city in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is about 1000km from the cities of Jakarta (Indonesia), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and Bangkok, or Krung Thep Maha Nakhon of Thailand. This is a landlocked city, about 37km from the center of Kuala Lumpur to the coast of the Indian Ocean.
Kuala Lumpur is located between Penang and Meleka, together with these two cities it also forms one of Malaysia's most popular tourist corridors.
Kuala Lumpur is a name only used by most foreigners and in written texts, but in fact locals on the Malay peninsula call it KL.
Topography and Administration
With an average elevation of 56 meters above sea level, the city is located in a large valley known as the Klang River valley or Klang valley. The east is shielded by the Titiwangsa mountain range about 1000 to over 2000 meters high. To the west of the valley is the Meleka Strait in the Indian Ocean. The Klang River draws its water from the Titiwangsa Mountains into the strait, the main river of this valley that splits Kuala Lumpur into two halves, however there is no significant difference between the two parts of the city. Another river, the shorter but wider Gombak, flows north-south and confluence with the Klang at Kolam Biru, located in the heart of the city.
