Adam, I've been a National Geographic expedition leader & I'm also Explorer In Residence for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and I think your wide skillset would be of tremendous value on an expedition. Your ingenuity and ability to improvise and remain cool under pressure would certainly be an asset. I'd love to have you as a member of one of my teams. FYI, I specialize in extreme places on planet Earth i.e. erupting volcanoes, hurricanes, caves, tornadoes and places like the flaming pit of burning gas in Turkmenistan. I believe we have a mutual friend, Palaeontologist Ken Lacovara.

When I worked at a little airport in college (as a lowly airplane fueler) I often worked with the couple aircraft mechanics (A&P's) we had in the shop, and I remember thinking it odd that they used their "own" tools and had their own personalized tool chests in the maintenance hangar. I used to think it was some sign that the company was cheap and wouldn't pay or provide tools for them, but I eventually learned it was because tools are "very" personal and particular to mechanics, something of a career investment for them, almost a matter of pride, and the fact that they had their own personal set in the shop was just standard practice. The part of your video where you mentioned giving your tools unique colors so they wouldn't be mixed up with others reminded me of that.

That and you can get compensation of tools used leading you to get better tools, or things to make your job easier.

As a 30+ year aircraft line mechanic, you are correct. You can actually judge the experience and skill level observing what tools are in a mechanics tool box ( if he lets you look, as they are quite personal) One of the things I show new mechanics just out of school, is what I have in my box, to make sure they buy what they really need and also which tool brands meet the quality requirements necessary. You may borrow a tool ONCE, then I expect you to have your own.

The definition of “client” can really be anyone you’re trying to serve. What a wonderful feeling to be able to say you’ve forgotten the stress that comes from a client. It’s probably the primary source of stress for 90% of the working American population.

Adams comment about how concentrating focus allows a better view on a larger picture should not be underestimated, I can relate to some recent personal studies, which have been enlightening, enriching, sometimes humbling, and surprising to boot. I spent my 20s working at resorts on National Parkland. It’s an odd and amazing job. When I worked in Denali Park Alaska I got to know one of the mechanics who maintained our generators. He spent his life as an itinerant mechanic, had worked all over including Antarctica keeping the power on in really remote and demanding places. Practical mechanics skills are hugely useful out in the field. It’s not just researchers that are involved in these projects there is a whole community of support staff who keep things running.

Not sure if I'm supposed to suggest things for you to watch. But if you haven't seen him there is a young knife maker called Will Stelter and he loves renervating old vices and he does not paint them but the finish he puts on them is beautiful. And he is well worth a watch. Thanks for reading this.

I've been coloring up and marking tools for decades.. when I was working doing a lot of access control systems where tools could be used outdoors as the sun went down and in the grass I decided to spray over the tools with some florescent paint and use a black light at the end of a shift to find the errant drivers etc. It worked really well. Much easier these days since I don't need a tabular black light with ballast! Paint pens of various colors are also a great friend to have. Use them like you use labels for wall wart power supplies. ID for voltage and amps at a glance!

Coloring your tools or writing your initials on them will help if someone 'adopts' them accidentally but it doesn't help if you don't know they're missing. A lot of pro bike mechanics like layered foam to organise their race day toolbox so they know, at a glance, if anything is missing.

So true about deep diving into something. I got a degree in horticulture, plants, and it's insane how much your world changes. Regrettably I also know most of the plants around you and its kind of a curse sometimes because it's impossible to turn it off lol more people should learn about the plants that live outside their house.

I once worked on an annual event/show that would loose hundreds of dollars in tools every year because the overwhelming majority of the crew didn’t own their own tools ( I wasn’t one of them ). So the show provided tools, and many would grow legs. In year 6 of my 10yrs with them I became a crew manager, as well as being responsible for the warehouse. Once again, when I did the inventory before year 7, I had a long list tools that needed to be replaced. That replacement reduces the build budget every year. Sooooooo ………. I bought a case of really ugly paint that was on clearance for cheap money, and painted EVERY tool, no matter how large or small with this color. Of course, I got yelled at by the office for “ruining” the company’s tools. BUT, in subsequent years, my tool replacement budget never exceeded $40. I was even granted permission to buy some new tools that we needed. That’s because no guy was man enough to be caught walking out of the building with a MAUVE painted tool in his pocket. Score one for ugly paint 😂

Hey Adam. I live in awe of your work and lifestyle. My friends have always said they can’t decide whether I’m more like you or Jamie since the 1st episode of the busters. I’m about to build myself my last ever, forever workshop. I’m trying to workout my design. I’ve been a cabinet maker installer for 30 something years as well as plastic fabrication, welding and bathroom work. I have been an RC plane guy since I was knee high to a grass hopper and have near 40 planes. I am struggling to come up with inspiration on what to put where and how big to build my shop on 3.5 acres. I am recently retired and know I only have this one chance at living out my years with this one shop. I like the way you have your shop set out but need some inspiration.

Funny your taking about refurbishing your bench vice. I inherited my grandfather’s vice. I remember it being around all my life and I’m 45. I refurbished it myself. Lucky for me I working a powder coat shop. I did a combo of 2 stage powder and Cerakote. The thing should last a 100 more years.

You don't limit yourself to hammerite type paint for cast iron. The texture of the casting lends itself to a intrinsic hammered finish. I've used slightly metallic automotive touch up paints (in rattle cans) with great success.

I have this mental picture of Adam visiting a very remote place, getting completely entranced by ISRU and coming up with ways to help local populations. He ends up staying there for 5-10 years totally engrossed in his work. 😂 It would be amazing, as much as I would miss him, others deserve the benefit of his genius too.

I used the bronze hammerite on my wood and metal vises and they look awesome restored. I really wanted a blue but couldn’t get my hands on it.

I'd never heard of Hammerite, so I tried the obvious URL, which was clearly the right place. So I clicked the Products tab, which told me to "Check availability of Hammerite products in your country by visiting your regional website." Which took me to a page with a world map on which North America is the only continent to have zero countries colored in. If you have a (grey market, I imagine) North American source, can you share it? Or did you just bring it back from some trip?

My wife and daughter are CIA grads (Culinary Institute of America) and all of their knives and tools have various colors (patterns of duct tape) on the handles. I’m a dress maker and all of my shears have my company name engraved. For my stuff it is just a pride thing as like you my tools don’t leave the shoppe. For my wife and daughter it is very important.

I don't think going on expeditions makes you think outwardly; I think extraverts tend to go on these expeditions, because they're not that great at thinking inwardly. Adam basically wants to be more of an extravert by needlessly risking his life with a bunch of extraverts.

You do know that the Saturn rocket used, was designed and invented by a German, the communications was The Dish in Australia… 12 different countries supplied components for the moon missions… do some Google research..
