I have bought 60 acres 5 years ago. 20 acres is all overgrown wild apple trees. I have for the first time ever pruned those trees , removed vines , and opened them up. The apple production has easily doubled and the apppes have gotten bigger. Every year i chip away at it . I have lots of food and bedding just no deer. The Amish kill any and everything brown.. Pruning does make a huge difference.
Regardless of apple or pear, the length of the branch needs to be pruned each winter. The strength of the branch from the stem is vital, especially when there’s fruit and in winter months with snow and ice (weight).
