I very much appreciate this video...watched the whole thing but I'm going to watch it again with a pen and paper in hand and make notes...thanks God Bless!
I am happy you liked it. I try to use methods that will help fanciers that do not have a lot of time become very successful. I put very little time into the pigeons and have much success.
Good job Frank !Appreciate all the tips. I have some of your Vanreets and other birds . They are doing great. Maybe you can talk about what newbies should focus on and what are your biggest regrets or what you can do better if you have a chance. Thanks Frank!
I was there for the live stream but my question was too long didn't go thru and I had to leave early. I rewatched the whole video today. I'll wait for the next one in a few weeks bc I have a few more questions come to mind that I wrote down. By the way, I flew your barley system last year and had better success. I think you're doing a great service to the sport. Thank you for giving back. Look forward to more of these.
This is very nice of you. I am lucky that I can compete and do well with very limited time. Anyone can have success if they spend all day every day worrying about the race team. I use methods that will help the busy pigeon fancier succeed. I look forward to the next live stream and your questions. Break them into small parts. I will keep going until I answer all questions.
Kevin from Ireland, I have just started within the last few years but haven't won yet! Enjoyed listening to your knowledge & very good at explaining 👍🇮🇪🍀🍀
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons Think I’m gonna start raising my children the same way Thks I’m a beginner started organizing 2mnths ago outta Putnam NY .You’re great.
I carnt wate for the next video on feeding. Can you go into young bird feeding. I had my first racing season last year and didn't do any good at all and in Australia its mainly young bird racing. Thanks for the informative info much appreciated. Watching from Pittsworth Queensland Australia.
Trying to find the time to do the Feeding Video. It will be a game changer for you. I use the same for young and old birds. Once you master feeding you will master racing.
Excellent question and I plan two videos on feeding. One for short distance and one for long distance. For races above 300 miles you should increase the safflower at least the day of shipping or even the day before shipping.
Hey Frank. Great video. I like to ask how much did you feed per day. Will depend on the type of grains they get on that day? Light feed -more , heavy feed - less. ? Racing season. Thanks.
Please make a video on how to recover the pigeons after a hard race. Our race here is like a bike race, aside from lap winners, overall winners get the bigger prize. Entered birds need to race every weekend, 6 laps so quick recovery is a must. Tnx
I am lucky that I have grain dealers near me and have my feed delivered from Global Pigeon out of New York. Brown's, Baden and Versele Laga are all good. You may be able to order on Chewy but I am not sure.
When you need the young to start exercising well add 30% barley to the feed mix. I go to my barley mix about a week before the first race. 30% barley in the mix will increase their loft flying.
When I feed the race team I only feed once a day and they clean everything up fairly fast. It is a limited amount of feed. The great pigeons keep a nice perfect body weight without too much feed. I will try to show my birds this race season eating and how much I give them. It is maybe less than many give. If you are worrying about how much to give add a 1/2 tablespoon of rabbit pellets to their mix each day and when they leave the pellets they had enough.
Hi Frank. How long do you leave the Barley in front of the Birds when they are resting before you remove the food? ALSO do you leave the Grits in front of the birds the day before basketing and on the day of Shipping? Cheers
If you feed until they leave a handful of barley you can leave this in front of the pigeons. They will finish in the next hour or so. There should never be more than a light sprinkling of barley in the feeder when start going to water. I never add fresh grits and minerals after Tuesday during the race season. I never pull or remove grits and minerals. They have free choice even on shipping day. If they need the minerals they will eat what they need.
Very best mineral supplement on the market is the Natural VitaMineral It is a pink mineral. See my mineral Video here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5vIXEclHiJA.html
Frank if i keep a hen ligth just the way you are saying all year round and than i breed this hen the babys are going be like that? Or a ligth body have to be from the genetics?
Great question but the body weight and pigeons that stay light and buoyant is genetics. Some pigeons have a more corky feel and great feather and just do not get fat and heavy. Those are the pigeons to select for breeding. Makes racing much easier.
That would be mistake. You should use a 14 to 16% protein grain mix. Many types of breeder mixes are good but the minerals and grits are more important than the grain you use as long as the pigeons have plenty of feed. The barley mix is great for racing.
Good morning Mr mclaughlin I have a pair of hatchling one of them are growing very fast and the Other one is growing very slow struggling could you tell me what could cause that.
Hi Kevin, Some babies not matter what you do will not thrive. We call it failure to thrive. Not your fault and happens to a weakling sometimes. Do not worry.
Its the 30 april 2024 here in south africa we loosing youngbirds at a alarming rate can it be solar flares that interfear with oriantation or what can it be send 180 birds for a 60 60 km toss only 40 gets home
There is not much you can do. The bird will always be like this. Might get a little better over time and you can use for a breeder but the head will be lopsided.
Did you train morning and afternoon? Here in Florida everybody do road training on the morning and loft fly afternoon. Feeding has to be different because all that work?
Training with another flyer even if you need to go the wrong direction of the race course will teach the pigeons to break. Watch my Education Young Bird Video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZC1vv0u2TmQ.html
Most of the time if you handle pigeon that just flew five or six hours that is how it should have gone to the race. I know at shipping if they are perfect weight and if they are perfect I have an amazing race. They must be light and buoyant and never round but not skinny and boney. I feel husky rice would be a good replacement. It will have high fiber and the birds will most likely not want to eat this in large amounts. Give it a try an let me know what you find in the results. I can learn something from you and help others if you have more success.
That is difficult to say. Finding great long distance pigeons is tough. I need my birds to fly 500 and 600 miles on the day so they need to have endurance and still have some speed. Marathon birds are usually too slow for me.
That is a good mix if you are training and working the pigeons harder than I do. I suggest 60% barley and 40% black label once a day six days a week for races under 350 miles and you will see better body weight in the pigeons. They should clean up all the feed at the feeding. On days you are not exercising or training the birds during rest give 80% barley. Watch what happens with your results.
I start adding Barley at maybe 30% when I want the babies to start flying around the lofts. Not sooner than two months old. I go to the racing feed two weeks before the start of the race season.
I have one question sir everyone in racing pigeons world what is four corn mixes when question that to good flyers they don't tell u the truth even they tell u what u add in the water Baz cheer
I like to show and tell exactly what I do. I have done much experimenting over the years and if I find something better I will certainly let everyone know.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons I am very to heard that the full sibling to the bird pedigree you showed me was equal to the 1st to Florida derby. Congratulation, Frank.
i have raced as long as you .done ok over the years from the long ones but the last few years our fed are short to middle races going to have ago next year. you are lerning me to race pigeons again. i watch you all the time going to race like you. your feeding is amazing. thank you frank. steve.@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons
The young not on the dark are very competitive in the second half of the race season once they have finished the body molt. I can beat the dark birds but not in August when the season starts. The end is where the best races are anyway.
I do not like peanuts. The main reason is most fancier give too many too often. The pigeons love peanuts and the pigeons train the fancier to give them many. There are other small fat seeds that are easier to control to give birds energy for long races. I would suggest only using a few peanuts on the pad when the birds home from a race or training. They learn to land right on the pad and compete for the five or six peanuts available. Keep peanuts in the cool and in the fridge.
Do you believe Jansen Brothers birds were all inbreeding and they were dominating in the short distance races in Belgium for decades generation after generation when these brothers were actively racing their birds? People are now still going after the pure Jasen brothers genetic birds now a day. This assumption challenge the inbreeding vs crossing.
That is a good question. The Janssen Brothers had much success and most likely had some great genetics and these pigeons won short distance. Most crossed their pigeons and had more success. There was much secrecy at the Janssen Brothers loft and only wrote the parents band numbers on the ring cards. Rumor has it their best pigeons came through the Fabry bird they brought in. We will never know for sure what they did. After they became famous the did not race for many years and just sold. Many were only looking for the ring for marketing purposes
I do appreciate this. I have not looked at instagram. I am so busy all the time I have trouble keeping up with all the messages. My son will be able to help me get started on Instagram.
