Pastor and author Kevin DeYoung answers a common question: How should Christians respond to biblical scholarship that denies that passages like Leviticus 18 and Romans 1 condemn homosexual practice?
DeYoung newest book, "What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality?", examines key biblical passages in both the Old and New Testaments and then responds to popular objections raised by Christians and non-Christians alike.

this is an interperation of Leviticus problem (one we gentiles really dont need concerning of since were not of Moses’ covenant with God) but thou shalt not lie with man as with woman was like the other Leviticus laws in that they are simplified for simple ancient human beings. They had no word for being gay or for homosexual acts. Now Jesus never gives us the reinterpretation with these laws but we know he had to reinterpret the commandments for the Jewish people were now scholarly people but the Rabbis forced His Word not with their hearts but with their eyes only. Therefore we can see leviticus is super basic in its meanings. Getting back to Paul it seems abundantly apparent that being Gay is not a sin, nor to engage in holy sex with the ones they love. It was only sin if the gay man only did it for pleasure of the flesh as with everyone else, or if people who werent gay engaged in homosexual acts, again for the flesh. However this is if we believe the hebrew translation, however when taking the direct hebrew line of leviticus it is missing a word. Whether from Hebrew to english (very broken) or Hebrew to Greek to English (The best possible direct way) theres no mention of man lying with man specifically, always comes “you shall not lie with, as you would woman, abomination.” you are misinterpreting arsenokoitai which is a greek word for pedophilia before pederasty was coined. Greek was known for homosexual relationship and they had names for them. SO why didn’t Paul use those words? Because he knows the Word of the Living God. Arseno is greek for male or boy, koitai is to bed with, a sexual euphemism. To say it means anything besides pedophilia is wrong and sinful for you are trying to change the Bible and the Word of the Living God. It is pure evil to continue the lie of gay sin. Repent!

It’s not at all an “argument from silence.” Scholars of the history of sexuality across an entire array of disciplines have been working all this out for decades. Biblical scholars are generally not experts in the field and are unreliable regarding it. The overwhelming consensus is that ancient sexuality knew nothing of sexual orientation and, in the male case, was essentially based on a pederastic and extramarital model. Claims to the contrary by biblical scholars and a tiny minority of scholars of the history of sexuality involve rather unsophisticated readings of texts. Homosexuality is described quite plainly in the biblical text. Expert or no expert it's undeniable that what is described in Romans 1 is between men and not some form of child prostitution. They didn't have words for homosexuality in ancient times. Paul pretty much had to either describe the action or create a word that would accurately translate as homosexual.

The “creation mandate” is not necessarily a mandate. The text says that it was a blessing, not an order. God gave them permission to be fruitful and multiply, but to say that He commanded it is to presume upon the text.
@Harlem55
@Harlem55 2 года назад
The problem with that whole line of reasoning of a "creation mandate" is the question: Who was the directive directed at? (Remembering the Bible is always Explicit and Never Implicit) The text says "And God blessed them (Adam and Eve), and God said unto them (Adam and Eve), Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." (Gen. 1:28 KJV). Rather, the text makes clear that God told ADAM AND EVE to be fruitful and multiply. Rather there is nothing in that text that has anything to do with the Children of Israel (e.g. the Jews) or the N.T. Church.
@MrTheomatics
@MrTheomatics Год назад
@@Harlem55 There is a problem with taking things too literal. If God means that only Adam and Eve were to be fruitful and multiply using the argument "He never said: Mankind: Be fruitful and multipy Adam and Eve would have gotten as many children as physically possible in their very long life. However after the flood we still had only Noach, his wife, his 3 children and their 3 wives. Since God did not tell Noach and those with him: Be fruitful ad multiply that would have been the end of humanity. Taking things 100% literal is a contradiction here as it takes the first part literal but it ignores the part: replenish the earth and subdue it. That is not possible with that limited number of children. Adam and Eve represent humanity. God says therefore to humanity: be fruitful and multiply. However he is not requiring every human to be fruitful and multiply. It is not a sin if a person is not following this text: be fruitful and multiply. Paul is a good example of that I think. Although he probably was married before he started his apostolic work and he is likely to have had children then as well so I think. That said: Paul himself said: I hope people are like me. He referred to him being single so not having a wife and children for whom he otherwise had to take care of. I am happy that Tim Matteson said that "the creation mandate" is not necessarily a mandate but rather a blessing and that the Bible text clearly uses the vocabulary of blessing. "And God blessed them and God said unto them". That sounds very different from: "And God commanded them and said:". That said it is just sad that a verse like Genesis 1:28 can mean something so radically different to two sets of people who both love Jesus and who both have a love for the Bible. I do get the impression though that God condemns those who refuse to accept that God is not giving a command but a blessing. People who interpret Genesis 1:28 to mean a command end up in a whole list of Christian topics in a legalistic way which also impairs the establishment of Christian community so those people are more inclined to end up being alone instead of being in Christian community. At the same time I can't really admit that people who see Geneis 1:28 as a blessing instead of a command end up being open to Christian community. Still on balance I think that the people who see Genesis 1:28 as a blessing will end up being the ones who are creating strong loving Christian communities. The Bride of Jesus Christ on Earth in groups of Christians all over the World who love Jesus and who put Him above everything else.
@Harlem55
@Harlem55 Год назад
@@MrTheomatics the problem with that is that it is first very clearly a command: the sentence "be fruitful and multiply" is an imparitive such that it requires us to insert our own reasoning into the text where we ought not to be able to interpret the text otherwise. Rather the Bible does not change and we must take heed to the features of thw text as the Bible is to be interpreted by rule of textualisim and originalism. Adam and Noah were more or less in the same situation such that the same directive would apply since the earth was in a depopulated state. However: it we all follow the command in the here and now in the literal sense we would quickly get overpopulation as a result. (Think if everyone in china had children just to three generations- how many people is that?). Such that we look to the totality of the circumstances of the person to whom the command is directed at the time the command was given as to determine the underlying intent of the command such that we applt it to like facts and circumstances. However- fruitfullness and mulriplication requires many different roles as a saltwater aquarium demonstrates: we have fish in saltwater aquariums that provide suppoetive roles that allow other fish to continue to multiply without causing the saltwater ecosystem to collapse. If we were to eliminate homosexuality from our ecosystem what might the effects be? It well might not be the effects one might expect given that we dont entirely know the proximate function of homosexuality upon our own ecosystem such that to remove it might well cause that system to become diseased in unexpected ways or worse. Rather we must be mindful that w do not exist in history such as to apply history rightfully to the current world in which we live.

The Bible’s standard regarding homosexual acts is clear. God’s Word says: “You must not lie down with a male in the same way that you lie down with a woman.”-Leviticus 18:22. “Do not be misled. Those who are sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who submit to homosexual acts, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, and extortioners will not inherit God’s Kingdom.”-1 Corinthians 6:9, 10 The Bible teaches that sex should be engaged in only by a male and a female who are married to each other.-Genesis 1:27, 28; Proverbs 5:18, 19. Although the Bible condemns homosexual acts, it does not encourage prejudice, hate crimes, or any other kind of mistreatment of homosexuals.-Romans 12:18. That is what true Christians believe, and they have a right to it. At the same time, God's Witnessess strive to “pursue peace with all people.” (Hebrews 12:14) While they reject homosexual acts, his people do not force their view on others, nor do they participate in homophobic hate crimes or rejoice when they hear of them. Christians strive to follow the Golden Rule by treating others the way they themselves would like to be treated although they do not agree with homosexuality.-Matthew 7:12 Thank you 🫂💙

The word “homosexual” did not appear in the Bible until 1946. The original Leviticus verse 18:22 states that “a man shall not lie with *young boys* as he does with a woman”. Referring to pedophiles. It translates the same in both verses. In early versions of the German Bible, they used the word knabenschander,not homosexual. Knaben is boy, schander is molester. This word “boy molesters” for the most part carried through the next several centuries of German Bible translations. Knabenschander is also in 1 Timothy 1:10. In 1674 Swedish translation and 1830 Norwegian translation also said “boy abuser/boy molesters”.

An "argument from silence"? Only if you think the Bible writers are divorced from their own culture. It is an argument based on what we know about the times in which the authors were writing. They were talking about homosexual practice in their own day. If you want to know what that was, you are going to have to go outside the Bible and into the work of cultural archeologists to find out what was happening at the time. That work is hardly "silence".

The passage which most people use to condemn homosexuality occur solely in the Holiness Code of Leviticus, a ritual manual for Israel‘s priests. Their meaning can only be fully appreciated in the historical and cultural context of the ancient Hebrew people. Israel, in a unique place as the chosen people of one God, was to avoid the practices of other peoples and gods. Hebrew religion, characterized by the revelation of one God, stood in continuous tension with the religion of the surrounding Canaanites who worshipped the multiple gods of fertility cults. Canaanite idol worship, which featured female and male cult prostitution as noted in Deuteronomy 23:17, repeatedly compromised Israel‘s loyalty to God. The Hebrew word for a male cult prostitute, qadesh, is mistranslated "sodomite" in most versions of the Bible. What is an "Abomination"? An abomination is that which God found detestable because it was unclean, disloyal, or unjust. Several Hebrew words were so translated, and the one found in Leviticus, toevah, is usually associated with idolatry, as in Ezekiel, where it occurs numerous times. Given the strong association of toevah with idolatry and the canaanite religious practice of cult prostitution, the use of toevah regarding male same-sex acts in Leviticus calls into question any conclusion that such condemnation also applies to loving, responsible homosexual relationships.

This suffers from an unescapable problem when we compare scripture with scripture: "I (Paul the apostle) am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia...and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers (e.g. the law of Moses), and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day." (See Acts 22:3 KJV.) Thus, the Bible clearly and undeniably teaches that the Pauline epistles teach within the framework of the law of Moses, so whatever the NT teaches on the subject necessarily relies on reading the Mosaic law. It is therefore hermeneutically incorrect to attempt to use a NT passage as a proof text for anything in a manner isolated from the law of Moses because the OT Mosaic law is the foundation for NT teaching. Therefore, we must first interpret Lev. 18:22 and Lev. 20:13 FIRST before we even consider the Pauline Text, Because Paul does not teach anything contrary to the law, because Christ did not do away with the Mosaic Law. (See Matt 5:18 KJV) , therefore the NT clearly did not alter the Mosaic law in any material manner by extension of that verse. We then have the principle of Christological Hermeneutics which flows from the fact that because we believe that the Bible doesn't contradict itself as a basic fundamental Christian doctrine, it, therefore, follows we cannot interpret scripture in a way that is not harmonious with what the Bible says about the Nature of God in three persons: texts which make positive statements about the basic nature of God the Father, God the Son, and God the holy spirit. The problem for this video is that the proper interpretation of the Levitical law does not arrive at an antihomosexual position in light of proper hermenutics. We will demonstrate this rather quickly in short order using orthodox Christian hermeneutics. Lev. 18:22 (KJV) reads "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." First question: who is "Thou" in v. 18:22? We see in v. 18:1 "And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them..." Therefore, "Thou" in Lev. 18:22 is "The Children of Israel" - a gender-neutral phrase which quickly renders it illogical that the verse is about homosexuality (e.g. there is nothing in our text, or even in the entire chapter, to say or substantiate that "Thou" in v. 18:22 is necessarily a male). Therefore, an antihomosexual postion collapses under it's own ponderosity given what the text clearly and undeniably says. the interpretation only gets worse for those whom mantain the antihomosexual position, in that This is further reinforced by Lev. 20:13 "If a man also lie with mankind, (in the same way) as HE lieth with a woman..." Who is "HE" in v. 20:13? The answer of course is that "HE" refers to the subject of the sentence- "a man". We then look at Christological hermeneutics: John 8:13 (which were the words of Christ) "Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.". What does this tell us? God does not judge Man's volition or actions by the standard of the volition or actions of another man- because that is nothing more than judging one man as compared to the acts of another man- neither of which are clean in the sight of God. (Cf. Romans 3:23- For ALL (e.g. BOTH heterosexuals and homosexuals) have sinned and fall short of the glory of God). Thus, having interpreted that Lev. 20:13 grammatically indicates that "a man" and "HE" are the exact same person. Therefore- it becomes that if a man lies with a male as the same man lies with a female- what do we call that in our modern culture? The answer is of course Bisexuality, not homosexuality. This is furthered in principle by what the NT clearly teaches about marriage- e.g. that the marriage bed (whether, pro arguendo, it be a heterosexual or homosexual marriage in the sense that homosexual marriage would still follow the same law of heterosexual marriage in terms of Biblical hermeneutics if we interpret the law to apply without respect to persons - Cf. Romans 2:11-16) is between two people only, and it then logically follows that by that nature of things true Bisexuality in terms of action (as compared to mere Bisexual volition) is the sin of Adultery / Premarital sexual immorality in general and is precisely what Lev. 18:22 and Lev. 20:13 are talking about, given the sum and totality of the text. Therefore, it follows that because Paul's teaching was consistent with the law and did not alter the law, we must interpret the Pauline text in line with our interpretation of the law.

The Bible was written a “really really” long time ago, but, God does not change.-Malachi 3:6. Every word written in the Bible was inspired by God. -2 Timothy 3:16. God says that man should not lie down with a man, As they do with a woman. Leviticus 18:22 is VERY CLEAR and should not be taken out of context. And if you don’t believe homosexuality is wrong, I tell you, you are in denial. God created a man first in the garden of Eden. Later God put Adam into a deep sleep and took out one of his ribs, creating a woman. - Genesis 2:22-24. So God never created a man to mate with a man and a woman to mate with a woman. It is an abomination in the sight of God. This was not the purpose of God’s creation. This is why the act of homosexuality is an insult to his creation. God does not hate homosexuals!! He hates the behavior. Everything I just said to you was strictly Bible based. And every word in the Bible is true whether people want to believe that or not. To disagree with what I just described, is simply denial. You know deep in your heart that homosexuality is wrong, and us as mankind try to justify and find ways around what is written in the Bible. Simply because “we wanna have our cake and eat it too”. We know that God is so merciful and he forgives, but do not forget the God of the Bible, he destroyed cities and nations because of disobedience. God is strict believe it or not. Small is the gate and narrow is the road to heaven, and only FEW find it.-Matthew 7:14…. If you read this message I believe you read it for a reason. I love you all.

Brother in Christ. God speak in parables. You need to understand that a lot of scripture is not mean to be taken literally. The discernment some of you claim to have is just not there. He was referring to rape and pedophiles. You can’t say things are “strictly Bible based” when the Bible itself is a collection of stories. His words do change as the New Testament changes a lot. Hebrews 8:13, ESV: In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Hebrews 8:13, KJV: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. You can’t tell me Gods design was to make guys like me suffer and for guys like you to have your “cake and eat it too” you’re no better than me so why can’t I experience love. The issue people seem to undoubtly forget is there are only 3 mentions in the Bible of homosexuality and they are all misinterpreted by people like you. You know why? Because it has nothing to do with you actually believing it, it’s your personal belief. You haven’t experience what I’ve experienced. It’s easy for you do say what you say. There’s more mentions of sins between men and women in the Bible. What’s that say?

What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”” ‬‬ I understand you brother, I also understand where you’re coming from. I simply cannot agree with you. When we read, we have to understand the context of what we’re reading. That is why we must study. Men having relations with men, and women having relations with women in an obsolete way, completely goes against the oracles of god. A woman was designed for a man. Which is why two men cannot procreate. Now women want to be men, and men want to be women (transgender association). As a nation we have completely gone against the oracles of god, rebuild against his teachings. Our nation has turned into Sodom and Gomorrah completely. And will be destroyed at a time that no man knows, because of disobedience. If you don’t know now, that homosexuality goes against the oracles of god. You will find out later. There are also clear ways to tell if the relationship Jonathan and David had was only Brotherly Love or if it was a Love that included sexual expression of that Love. Do you Know how to do that??? In addition there are other Love relationships in the Bible such as the one Danial had with the Prince of the Eunuchs! Daniel Never married and he was one of YHWH's most beloved Prophets!!! Other gay relationships beyond these 2 are also in the Bible. I guess you overlooked them as do Most Christians. Most Christians are nothing more than CINO's. Christian-In-Name-Only. And ever since this "cristal clear" book caused the split up of hundreds of confessions and interpretations and even different religions. Meanwhile we homosexuals will life our lives and observe, how you guys doing in your interpretations about if you accept us or not ;) One day, as all cultures on this planet, Christianity and the Bible will disapopear. @@Isaiah-xs5jl the bible also said beastiality, rape, slavery, infanticide, homicide, genocide, etc was allllllllll fine as long as god commands it- which he did, OFTEN. Sooooooo.... being gay doesn't seem so bad imo. Might want to actually read that book. Funny what you people will actually put up with in your religion. Lets have a little bible session shall we? Let's see what this 'loving god' actually looks like... A pregnant woman who is injured and aborts the fetus warrants financial compensation only (to her husband), suggesting that the fetus is property, not a person (Exodus 21:22-25). • The gruesome priestly purity test to which a wife accused of adultery must submit will cause her to abort the fetus if she is guilty, indicating that the fetus does not possess a right to life (Numbers 5:11-31). • God enumerated his punishments for disobedience, including "cursed shall be the fruit of your womb" and "you will eat the fruit of your womb," directly contradicting sanctity-of-life claims (Deuteronomy 28:18,53). • Elisha's prophecy for soon-to-be King Hazael said he would attack the Israelites, burn their cities, crush the heads of their babies and rip open their pregnant women (2 Kings 8:12). • King Menahem of Israel destroyed Tiphsah (also called Tappuah) and the surrounding towns, killing all residents and ripping open pregnant women with the sword (2 Kings 15:16). • Isaiah prophesied doom for Babylon, including the murder of unborn children: "They will have no pity on the fruit of the womb" (Isaiah 13:18). • For worshiping idols, God declared that not one of his people would live, not a man, woman or child (not even babies in arms), again confuting assertions about the sanctity of life (Jeremiah 44:7-8). • God will punish the Israelites by destroying their unborn children, who will die at birth, or perish in the womb, or never even be conceived (Hosea 9:10-16). • For rebelling against God, Samaria's people will be killed, their babies will be dashed to death against the ground, and their pregnant women will be ripped open with a sword (Hosea 13:16). • Jesus did not express any special concern for unborn children during the anticipated end times: "Woe to pregnant women and those who are nursing" (Matthew 24:19). God kills 70,000 innocent people because David ordered a census of the people (1 Chronicles 21). Just about every other page in the Old Testament has God killing somebody! In 2 Kings 10:18-27, God orders the murder of all the worshipers of a different god in their very own church! In total God kills 371,186 people directly and orders another 1,862,265 people murdered The God of the Bible also allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 & Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9). This type of criminal behavior should shock any moral person. And just in case you are thinking that the evil and immoral laws of the Old Testament are no longer in effect, perhaps you should read where Jesus makes it perfectly clear: It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid (Luke 16:17) 1) “For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV) Clearly the Old Testament is to be obeyed until the end of human existence itself. None other then Jesus said so. 2) All of the vicious Old Testament laws will be binding forever. “It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid.” (Luke 16:17 NAB) 3) Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (Matthew 5:17 NAB) 3b) “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness…” (2 Timothy 3:16 NAB) 3c) “Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.” (2 Peter 20-21 NAB) 4) Jesus criticizes the Jews for not killing their disobedient children according to Old Testament law. Mark.7:9-13 “Whoever curses father or mother shall die” (Mark 7:10 NAB) 5) Jesus is criticized by the Pharisees for not washing his hands before eating. He defends himself by attacking them for not killing disobedient children according to the commandment: “He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” (Matthew 15:4-7) 6) Jesus has a punishment even worse than his father concerning adultery: God said the act of adultery was punishable by death. Jesus says looking with lust is the same thing and you should gouge your eye out, better a part, than the whole. The punishment under Jesus is an eternity in Hell. (Matthew 5:27) 7) Peter says that all slaves should “be subject to [their] masters with all fear,” to the bad and cruel as well as the “good and gentle.” This is merely an echo of the same slavery commands in the Old Testament. 1 Peter 2:18 8) “Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law” (John7:19) and “For the law was given by Moses,…” (John 1:17). But don't forget... gay is bad... 🤦‍♀️

@@ShinyNix86 I am on phone so my reply is briefer than I would prefer as I can't see your message while I am typing mine. Your argument is that homosexuality is okay because other things that seem horrible are okay to you in the Bible, firstly the Bible does not suggest a fetus is property, if you read that whole passage from exodus 21 it says if the baby is not harmed the man must pay a fee but if he kills the child in the womb he is to die, which is the opposite of the meaning trying to be stretched from the verse. Your first verse quotation is entirely twisted to mean something it clearly conveys the opposite of, as for the other verses which are hyperbole and God's command. God is allowed to do with human life what he wants as he created us and he knows what will become of us.
