To be clear, it's not that defective mitochondria actually inhibit mitophagy. It's that the main mechanisms whereby the mitophagy selects individual mitochondria for culling are short-circuited when mitochondria's energy-producing potential is greatly inhibited. So it's a mitochondrion-specific effect, whether one mitochondrion is defective or all of them are.
