Nick is saying alllll the same stuff parents say before real life parenting hits them. He’s the “best parent ever” before actually experiencing it. He’s coming across so self righteous and his kid will hopefully humble him.

You all just really love to hate on Nick. I did not get the vibe that he was being self righteous and condescending towards people that practice “gentle parenting.” He was simply stating how he would personally try handle particular situations. And I agree with him completely. The only thing that really bothered me though was him cutting off the producers constantly.

I usually like Ask Nick, but I couldnt get through the intro this time. Let Leia and Justin finish a sentence. Leia tried so many times to explain gentle parenting and you didn't let her get past "So what I think they mean with collaboration is..." or "In the case Justin is describing it would be..." It comes across very rude.

I feel like the one aspect of gentle parenting, from my understanding, that was missed in this convo is knowing that as a parent you're bound to lose your temper when your kids are limit-testing...but part of gentle parenting is incorporating rupture & repair: so many older generations never apologized after snapping in a parenting moment when they were dysregulated. Showing your kids that you're human too, demonstrates that we all make mistakes and are worthy of love even in the face of those poor choices/judgement calls.

Gentle parenting is often confused with permissive parenting. It’s not about negotiating with your kids or never saying no but more about working with them to learn how to self regulate and eliminating unnecessary power struggles. As far as not using negative words that is accurate for young kids (under 5) because they don’t have the cognitive ability to understand negatives. So when you say stop throwing they only hear “throwing” so instead I would say something like the toy stays in our hands. It’s still enforcing the boundary but in a way their brain can understand. If they continue to throw then they lose the toy as a consequence. As far as punishments, it’s about having consequences that make sense to the behavior so instead of a time out they might no longer be able to have access to the toy they were misusing.

How about he waits til he goes through of the stuff he’s talking about before making bold claims about how he’ll handle it?
@carolineboyk9692
@carolineboyk9692 Месяц назад
Gentle parenting does involve saying no. It's about consequences for your actions. They absolutely get taught right from wrong, without getting screamed at. It's about helping kids emotionally regulate and learn clear boundaries in the home. Kids test boundaries, and there are consequences for breaking them. If a kid draws on a wall, the crayons are taken away and they're helping to clean up - that's the boundary and consequence, no one is framing the wall lol. Gentle parenting IS NOT permissive parenting, permissive is letting kids rule the house with no consequences. I think if Nick and crew actually learned about it, and bothered to read more than a tagline, may find it to be quite insightful.
@Awest0803
@Awest0803 Месяц назад
We gentle parent and we say “no”. We also explain why we’re saying no instead of “because I said so” there’s different levels of gentle parenting given the child’s developmental age. Gentle parenting teaches your child how to self regulate and know they deserve respect.

The girl that said she will make her kid eat whatever she wants them to eat, come talk again when you have a kid. I said a lot of things I was “going to do” with my kid before having my son. He has sensory issues, his pallet is small of what he eats, and we respect that. What you say you’ll do, and what you’ll actually do once you become a parent are very different.

I definitely don’t feel like the idea of gentle parenting was understood. It’s more about consequences versus punishments. For the peeing yourself example having the child do their laundry would be a consequence versus a punishment. It’s relatable to the negative behavior. You pee yourself, so now your clothes are dirty, so now you need to clean them (and yes a 5 or 6 years old could do the laundry with guidance from parent). A punishment in this situation would be yelling at the child, saying something mean like “why did you do this again, now you smell, you can’t watch tv for a week” it’s demeaning and the punishment is not relatable to what happened at all. Just makes an angry, embarrassed, resentful child.

What can make a child sucidal is lack of understanding, attention, empathy from their parents, peers combined with some personality traits like beeing anxious,melancholic etc., NOT "GENTLE PARENTING". Yeah not loving the long rants about topics you’ve never looked into and have no experience or education in😅 I’ve been a nanny for those who gentle parent - no one is framing a wall!! It’s about teaching your kid as they make mistakes. Kids are a blank slate and learn about the world through us. It’s literally your job as a parent to teach them - otherwise, they may learn the wrong lessons based on how you handle punishments. Do you want your child to think “I can’t get caught drawing on the wall cause I get hit and screamed at when I do” or “when I want to draw, I draw on paper. If I draw on the wall, I get my colors taken away and we have to clean the wall instead of playing together” Which one makes more logical sense? Gentle parenting is about teaching your child boundaries and consequences that correlate rather than causing shame. They will grow up to be way more confident and emotionally regulated as an adult if you make their childhood about learning.

Now your already holding her back so do you really believe that or is it just cause it’s your child and your first child to top it off?
