Ask the Vet - Should I use diatomaceous earth as a dewormer?

In this excerpt from the November 2019 episode of Ask the Vet, Dr. Gray and SmartPaker Dan discuss the trend of using diatomaceous earth as a dewormer in horses. Dr. Gray talks about what diatomaceous earth actually is, why it’s important to the environment (you’ll never guess why), what it is used for, and what you should not use it for. Plus, if you’ve ever wondered how to make “teeny, tiny bug jerky,” (and who hasn’t?) this is the video for you.

I don’t know, it has always worked for me for pigs and chickens which has worked like a charm. I could see one problem though, it not a chemical and it is cheap so hard to make a profit off compared to something like fenbendazole. This video is liking asking a Chevron employee if you should you buy an electric car.

I agree fully with your response. The breeder of my standard poodles lives by it and she made me aware as i have 10 pooches (standards of course). A dewormer pill at the vet for each dog would nail me $100 per pet for two pills. Understandably this doctor with all the letters as states would dispel DE because the DE use would takes from their pockets. As for use, i place on/in their dry kibble and occasionally will make meatballs laced with DE to ensure each is getting their proper doseage. No works here. I also use outside and have inside.it kills on contact if sprinkled on the bug including wasps and earwigs but better just have to keep a fine layer at the basement door and any bug that crawls over dies as their belly gets cup up. Food grade means i can mix it up in a shake and it does work. BUT do no expect a vet to condone as part of their profits lie with pharma and drugs. My vet has never told me about DE. DE does intestinal parasites and worms but does not get rid or heartworm as this critter travels in the blood to the heart and lungs. No heartworm where i at. A bitch mosquito needs two weeks with overnight temps at 13F if one of the nights is 12 or under, her cycle has to start over and she likely dies before releasing any microfilia. I live in northern ontario - use to give my pets revolution until i found out it does one worm in addition to the heartworm that lilkely can never manifest. CONCLUSION - i live my DE for my pets and sometimes me - i get on amazon.ca and it is available at food grade and 50lb bag (2 x 25) - i could go on …. ….

I’ve been rescuing kittens the past few week and the most recent kitten is about 4 weeks old, severely underweight, definitely shows signs of upper respiratory infection, had flea, mite, & tying tick infestation. Before her flea bath I coated her with Diatomaceous earth. The carrier she came in had 2 ticks & fleas on it from her coat. I coated the cushion in her carrier with D.E. I let the D.E sit on her for an hour before doing her hot oil treatment & flea bath. When I went to wash her cost all of the fleas were dead, none were jumping towards her face. Unfortunately, there were still some walking dandruff which will require vet care & a lime sulfur dip. However, when I went to wash the covering of the cushion from her carrier that I had covered in, ALL OF THE BUGS WERE FLAT AND LOOKED LIKE MELTED SPECKS! I’ve taken D.E before myself and could go on about the awesome benefits. The stuff works! Dr’s are paid to encourage the use of drugs.

Many people think that it can be used for deworming. One article says "For the past two decades’ fossil shell flour (FSF) has been used to naturally deworm animals......In addition, the use of FSF recorded savings of $1.50 per head for both ewes and cattle as a dewormer over the use of conventional medicines." Another article says "However, BB hens treated with dietary DE had significantly lower Capillaria FEC, slightly lower Eimeria FEC, fewer birds infected with Heterakis, and significantly lower Heterakis worm burden than control BB hens" There are a few other articles that say there is not a difference with DE for deworming. Another study with sheep says " DE by itself was not shown to be an effective parasite control agent, but could be used as part of a parasite control program." The lack of number of studies and study details lead me to believe there is a real lack of interest in confirming or disproving. Big research companies aren't going to support researchers and universities doing research that could lose them $$$$. That's why people don't always trust professionals and doctors, government, politicians, dentists, teachers, or many other people that are considered professionals in their line of work/study. Not saying that they don't have good intentions, but people have to have a healthy amount of skepticism, and know the motivations for why somebody might be telling you something. Additionally, I didn't find ONE professional study on a CAT OR DOG, and you know how many of those they got locked up in Universities doing drug and chemical research???? They could easily have done a study on it (or rather more research), but they would rather bring in profits with harmful chemicals. Yet, a whole bunch of people with actual pets have articles saying that it is working OR helping, and are recommending how much to give for different animals. Personally, I am not saying these people are incorrect in the video, I'm wondering what are their motivations and the motivations of the highly reputable person they are quoting... Is it just to remain status quo with their answers Martin K. Nielsen Equine Parasitology "we're not aware of any studies that have shown effectiveness of diatomaceous earth and therefore do not recommend it's use as a dewormer", how many studies have they looked into and what are the details of those studies (any studies on cats or dogs?), or have they done any personal research and observation using their own pets? What do they have to say to people that are using it, and are convinced it is working? Seems like you would really want to stop people from using it if it is not actually helping, and therefore would want firm confirmation in the vet community that it does not work. I would like to see a study on cats or dogs over the long term and the details on how much was given, and that there were no differences. I realize this has to do with horses which are quite larger. I looked up some of this guys videos on youtube Martin Nielsen... he had 41 second video saying there is a lot of research on DE and that all he could say is that it is not an effective dewormer. He didn't go through any of the research in the video or care to elaborate.

Funny, just finished reading that article on PubMed! It's so frustrating having information overload with this kind of thing. Today I post this comment as someone who has experience in both Diatomaceous Earth and have studied parasitology, epidemiology and veterinary studies on top of this. I have always been led towards a more holistic approach as it has personally worked better for me (and all my pets! They have always been healthy.), than the Western pharmaceutical approach. From my studies, the pharmaceutical reps would always push their products and bad mouth the holistic methods. I know from experience the amount of vets who follow their narrative as they genuinely believe the reps hold all the answers. It is not so! Hey, I could get into animal nutrition at this time, but it's for another topic as I'd be here all day. Anyway, DE works. It really does. I would maybe start researching studies done independently and by individual people, as well as their honest results. You say there was a chairman who knows all his stuff, he doesn't recommend it.. But he'll likely push the chemical based ingredients because they are so brutal, they work. But both work really well and there is plenty of information online from pet owners and holistic vets and veterinary staff who do not dismiss nature's ability just because a man who has "credentials" said so. He likely hasn't done any personal studies on the topic and dismissed it because he is being paid to do that, in order to keep his buddies, ie, the pharmaceutical and pest control companies happy. It's a monopoly once you open your eyes. So many vets are clueless.

LOL "[The vets don't recommend using natural remedies, go to them and pay for their chemicals instead.]" I clicked this video knowing that vets wouldn't promote diatomaceous Earth because it loses them money, but I was curious of the type of double-speak they would use to say it. "We aren't aware of any studies" could also be explained by them not performing any unbiased experiments ;] *edit*: After seeing tapeworm segments in my kitten's stool several days in a row, I decided to give her a tablespoon of Diatomaceous Earth in her wet food. I did this 3 times (once per day for 3 days, first dose of DE was 1/4 tablespoon to see how she would react). On the 5th day she released a disgusting pile of soft, muddy feces that I assume contained the remains of the deceased tapeworm. It's been over a week and I haven't seen any tapeworm segments in any of her droppings, and I check them very thoroughly. I will return in 2 weeks, likely confirming that there are no more segments of tapeworm in her poop, and therefore none in her digestive tract as well. **edit: The diatomaceous Earth is absolutely effective at removing tapeworm from cats. Both of my cats were affected this year, and I saw a video about putting DE in their dry food. They were both cured within days If the lying, money-hungry fucks in the vet offices across Earth want a study that proves Diatomaceous Earth is SUCCESSFUL at treating certain internal parasites, there you go. Don't trust snakeoil salesmen, or the cute little life you're responsible for may suffer.

I’m no expert on the subject but DE is recommended to be used in worm composting to decrease arthropod insects. I have used DE on feral cats that had many round worms crawling in their vomit and feces. After a about a week of treatment the cats stopped coughing up worms, but there were still a few wigglers in their droppings. Another week or two and there were no longer any visible parasites in their stool. They were taken to a vet for a checkup and a few worms were found in their stool sample but the numbers were greatly reduced. I believe the worms are probably irritated by the sharp diatom skeletons and loosen their hold on the intestine and are flushed out while smaller and weaker worms maybe outright killed. Also had a severe problem with cabbage root maggots so applied DE to the root zone while planting and watered the DE into the soil. Have never had any plants attacked by maggots since using DE. The soil remains wet thorough out the growing season and the DE seems to be effective.

Since DE consists of skeletons of diatoms, they will not necessarily lose their abrasive qualities when wet. I cannot vouch for DE's effectiveness on internal parasites as I have not tried it, but I would not be too surprised. Diatoms are microscopic in size, so they are not going to harm those of us with bone skeletons. Only organisms with exoskeletons.

It doesn't work when wet...they are talking about use outside. After a heavy rain it washes away into the ground. It's no longer a barrier around plants and needs reapplied. It's not that it quits working it just gets washed away from where you need it.
@jyang0431
@jyang0431 2 года назад
@@ql2ku your right, it doesnt work when wet but when the yard dries up, you can see the DE, its white and powdery and it's just as effective. Whats even better is that it goes into the soil, killing larvae and eggs. I put DE in a jug with attachable sprayer, some water, stir, stir, stir, and spray my entire yard and my plants and vegetables. You wont see the DE when wet but after the water evaporates, its a beautiful white powder killing all those nasty critters.

We run a small cat rescue. We use this as a dewormer, and it absolutely works! Make sure to get "food grade" DE and do the math, so each kitty gets the correct amount for their weight. We do this by the bag, because it saves time and we have bags dedicated to each weight class. It has numerous benefits for your feline babies!🐈 We also use it to get rid of fleas and ticks! Since we started using DE 3 years ago, we haven't had any of our cats get worms or fleas. Our vet told us that just because there isn't an "official scientific study", doesn't mean that it doesn't work and if you paid someone enough money, they'd say the sun is blue. Doesn't mean that it is.

Where do you order it and what is the amount that you use for the babies ? I am running a rescue right now and the chemical dewormers on the market are causing spontaneous deaths in cats right now, so that is absolutely NOT an option!!!

@stephanienoonan5927 Год назад
@lindseys8039 Hi Lindsey's! You can buy DE in most hardware stores. Just make sure that you purchase "Food Grade" DE. For a 15lb to 22lb bag of cat food, this is what we do. 1. Empty half of the bag into a clean bucket. 2. With the half left in the bag, use 1 cup of DE. Put into the bag. Shake vigorously. The DE will adhere to the feed. Make sure to shake it up until the feed is well-coated. 3. Put the second half of the feed back in the bag. 4. Add 3/4 of a cup of DE to the feed bag. 5. Shake until well coated. 6. Let the feed rest for 3 hours. It helps the DE adhere to the fatty acids in the feed. 7. Feed your kitties! Still feed them the regular amount you usually do. The DE doesn't change the flavor of the feed. At least, our fur babies cain't tell the difference. In addition, we do the DE feeding 3 months on and 3 months off. I've never seen another worm since we started this 4 years ago. We have about 25 cats at any given time, so we go through a 15-lb to 22-lb bag of feed in a couple of days. So, we do 3 bags of this every month. So, for about a week. I dunno how big your herd is, lol, but we feed ours twice a day. It makes them feel better in the evenings. When we first started, we only fed them once a day, but they'd get upset with each other in the evenings. After we split the feeding for them to twice a day, they seem much happier. We already feed our Mama's twice a day. We haven't given the pregnant Mom's DE feed. Also, we wait to give it to the babies until they're 4 months old. I didn't read that anywhere, but my husband and I thought it was a good idea because the babies' systems are sensitive when they're younger. I hope this helps you and your fur babies have happier days.

There was a study that showed a reduction in parasite egg count in goat and sheep feces but not in cattle. If your pet has worms take them to a vet, I use 1/4 teaspoon food grade DE mixed in with the wet food when my cat eats a chipmunk for the last year and a half. So far so good.

It worked for me, I had a horrible parasite infection. Was itchy all over to the point where I couldn't sleep, intestinal pain etc. I took very high doses though & it got rid of the symptoms but it wrecked my healthy gut flora despite claims that it doesn't (the reason I chose it over antibiotics in the first place). However it might have been my fault for drinking it fanatically. Gut flora is very important for your health & all sorts of painful problems start to pop up when you do them in. Took me three years to restore it with probiotics, organic apple cider vinegar mainly. Which people also like to popo despite having no experience and only going off dodgy studies paid for by corporations who sell competitor products! It would be really nice if folks were just honest, anywho, there's probably better probiotics out there I'm not sure why it took three times the average duration to restore with apple cider. Maybe it was the product (which I used because it far cheaper than the competition when bought in bulk from Costco) or it could be my excessive screen time which is very bad for your gut biome apparently. Everything good just has to be bad. :/ Best of luck & take care!
