Uttama villain is one of the best movies I was of kamal haasn.....that one makes me cry every single time I see it. What a beautiful movie. Best way to show his gratitude towards his guru🎦🙏
I didn't like Uthama villian. I couldn't feel the excitement like I felt when I saw Hey Ram, Anbe Sivam. The narration was weak and that's what I felt. 🤷🏻♂️
I think KH has acted with few younger actors and many contemporary actors. YOUNG actors: 1.Siddarth (Indian 2), 2. Madhavan (Anbe sivam, Manmadhan Ambu), 3. Prabu deva (Kadhala kadhala), 4. Abbas (Hey ram, PKS), 5. Trisha (Thoongavanam - not a typical heroine. In fact they fight each other in the movie , literally), 6. Andrea jeremiah (Vishwaroopam series - not a typical heroine role), 7. Atul kulkarni ( Hey ram), 8. Kovai sarala ( Sathileelavathi - considering she is a comedian I think this is significant), 9. Devayani (Thenali, Panchathanthiram), 10. Ramyakrishnan (Panchathanthiram - not a heroine), 11. Karan (Nammavar) CONTEMPORARY actors: 1. Arjun (Kurithu punal), 2. Jayaram (Panchathanthiram, UV), Thenali) 3. Prabu (Vasool raja MBBS, Vetri vizha), 4. Sathyaraj (Kakki sattai, Maruthanayagam), 5. Pasupathy (Virumandi) 6. Rahul bose (Vishwaroopam series), 7. Shahrukh khan (Hey ram), 8. Naseeruddin Shah (Hey ram), 9. Mohan lal (Unnai pol oruvan), 10. Venkatesh (Unnai pol oruvan telugu version), 11. Napoleon (Virumandi, Dasavatharam) SENIOR actors: 1. Nagesh (Apoorva sagotharargal, Avvai shanmugi), 2. Om puri (Hey ram), 3. Gemini ganeshan (Avvai Shanmugi), 4. Vaali (Hey ram), 5. Sivaji ganeshan (Thevar magan), 6. Balachandar (UV), 7. Amitabh bachan (Giraftaar) And last but not the least his rival, friend, brother, our very own Superstar Rajinikanth (a fair share of movies).
ikr what a dumb question that was. this question is better for vijay and ajith who very very very rarely act with their contemporaries and younger actors. even if they do, then they give a sappai character. look at the crime they did with Kathir in Bigil.
has acted with prabhu in vetri vizha...sathyaraj in kakki sattai...napoleon in dasavatharam and virumaandi...and that amitabh bachan movie is giraftaar
Kamal Hassan is only Tamil actor to win 3 FILMFARE in Telugu industry. I never knew he is Tamilian until 2010. I always see him as Telugu hero as all his movies get dubbed in Telugu and he acted in many Telugu movies
Kamal is the only actor to give silver jubilee movies in all major industries in original versions (not dubbed). He is the only actor to receive best actor Filmfare award in all mainstream industries.
His strike rate in telugu is impeccable. Maro Charitra, Sagara Sangamam, Swathi Muthyam, Indrudu Chandrudu are memorable blockbusters in the span of 10 years between 1978-1988. That's stuff of legends.
I feel that the ageing arc of kamal's Balu in salangai Oli and his Velu nayakar in Nayagan is very different. Factually put Velunayakar comes a full circle where he gets to even meet nearly a 3-5 yr old grandson of his while Balu is just a fallen by the wayside, (profound alcoholic too) depressed, around 40 ish or middlish kind of a man who's got no purpose in life and feels wasted. In Balu K.Vishwanath, has tried to show how life's turns can age ones will and spirit at a faster rate than the actual body. Whereas Velunayakar has seen it all- the experiences, his life journey, his nostalgia is so emotionally overwhelming because Maniratnam takes us through that entire ride.
For me sagarasangamam and swatimuthyam. For me the later was the most complete movie ever made and I stand by it. Sagarasangamam has a deep love story, love for art, comedy , casting and screenplay. Brought classical dancing to the masses.
Reg a question about uttama villain: Everyone has a unique view for a movie and if BR does not liked it means it’s just his view but I felt in the last 10 years uttamavillain is one of the best kamal movie It is just excellent and it was like a small tribute to KB sir
BR, you seemed to answer with so much of enthusiasm this episode. I was delighted to hear when you told "nizhal nijamaagiradhu" .. I too love his role in that film. I love the romance between him and sumithra. I could see a balance of a "Kamal fan and a film reviewer" in this episode. 👏👏👍👍
The simplest way to describe the difference between Kamal and other so called natural actors is that - I can never see Kamalhassan in the films he plays as he turns himself into the character. Whereas those natural actors, though look very natural, I can see the actor playing the character at times. Even for the accent, when Lal sir does a Tamil dub it’s Tamil spoken in a Malayalam accent. Whereas Kamal ensures perfection in the accent as well. One is natural and the other is overdoing as many claiming now. But let’s appreciate both shall we.
When we talk of the women roles in Kamal movies, we shouldnt forget the smaller but impactful roles given to performers like S N Lakshmi (MMKR, Thevar Magan, Mahanadhi, Virumandi), Gandhimathi (Thevar Magan, Virumandi), Kalpana (Sathi Leelavathy), Kovai Sarala (Sathi Leelavathi), Manorama (Apoorva Sahodarargal), Rohini (Magalir Mattum, Virumandi) and even cameos like Kaviyoor Ponnamma (Sathya), Devayani (Panchathanthiram) Also, the space and strength of roles he gives to his co-leads and antagonists is something noteworthy. Most of them listed here have got their best roles in Kamal's movies - Nassar, Pasupathy, Jayaram, Arjun, Madhavan, Nagesh, Delhi Ganesh, Cochin Haneefa, Santhana Bharathi, Kakka Radhakrishnan and legends like Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan. He even gave Nasseruddin Shah his long dreamt role of Gandhi.
Great video on Kamal. The difference between Kamal and Rajni is well said I differ with one ppint. Maniratnam used the actor Kamal Hassan well but it's K.Balachander who moulded him as an actor. Or I would say KB extracted the best of KH even in the smallest role. Expected someone to ask about his character Rangan in Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu :-)
I loved the way you answered the comparison about Kamal and Mohanlal. It's getting irritating with the term natural acting. There is no such thing like that. Everyone does it in their own way. Mohanlal is a great actor, but I get bored off seeing many of his movies. It's so blunt. Anyway, it's good u appreciated Sivaji.
All true but maniratnam bought out the best in him . In the sense of his nunaced performance and his screen presence was more felt. And maniratnam is way more superior filmmaker
@@anushaanu1046 Its not so much as a comparison between KV & MR as to who is superior. Its just a point that along with BharatiRaja, KB & Balu Mahendra, KV derived an entirely unique stream of work from Kamal. MR did come along later and brought out Nayagan which is a singular and a most complete performance. Performances can't be compared and neither can directors. It just hurts when he's not mentioned sometimes in the same discussion of great directors that Kamal got to work with.
@@KarthikVijapurapu well wholly agreed with you said. Now that I am rediscovering k viswanath's work . I really understand your point of view . And it's quite a pleasure to watch his movies during quarantine . Quite transported to another era
Have not finished the whole video yet but your comments re: 'naturalistic' acting are spot on. I feel like ppl who automatically assume that good, 'realistic' acting means subtlety are just parroting the official line, they're not thinking very much on their own and questioning what 'realistic' human behavior actually is (how many real South Asian parents WOULDN'T have that reaction that was in Nayakan?) and they're certainly not well versed enough in art and aesthetics to consider that stylized and high-pitched performances are as valid as subtle styles when done well. It's brain-deadening to hear fantastic performances dismissed out of hand bc of that nonsense.
At 1:23, this is what some of the actors don't care about, like kamal Haasan did that time. Chiyaan, Suriya, and Dhanush don't give a fuck. Thank god we have them now.
Most likely someone already did. But it must've been time consuming to talk about the movie itself and it's 10 characters hence the movie wasn't addressed.
Anyone who says Kamal cant give an understated performance should watch 16 Vayathinile. Not that understated should be the benchmark for a good performance anyway
Someone asked if BR had watched all of Kamal's movies. I think this seems like a good new year's resolution kind of idea to explore! A movie a day... Anyone game :)?!
I think Kamal not having good collaborators is a three way catch 22. The core of the matter is that his screenplays of late have raced way past the industry. For example, uttama villain screenplay by itself would have many hollywood screenwriters running for their money. I think past maruda nayagam, he was just too passionate about the stories he wanted to tell. Sadly he did not have directors like mani ratnam, who could take his screenplays and really do justice to the direction part of it. If he stepped in and tried to cover for their direction deficiencies, he gets a bad reputation and even if he could deliver successes, he just by himself cannot deliver the magic you get when you combine two strong creative geniuses in sync. His taste is also so HIS - that movies that are his vision 100% are beautiful to the audience that is tuned to him and good art but are not a commercial guarantee (at least not right away). Secondly, so many roles he writes, you can’t think of an actor/star who can do better justice to them. And paying another star only gives him less budget (esp. if the movie is from RKFI) for the other cool technical feats he wants to try. Thirdly, he hasn’t had directors who have come to him with stories/screenplays that appeal to him more than the 8 bound scripts he has waiting to be made (this is a guess). THe bigger question is why is the industry structured in such a way that big collaborators like Mani ratnam (whose strong point is direction - not writing) don't work with Kamal who is a screenplay genius? What was selvaraghavan so afraid of when collaborating for vishwaroopam that he had to back off? The sad truth of the answer is - he is alone where he is because he has left everyone behind and no one is catching up to him fast enough for him to encash on their collaboration with him. Being where he is, he also no longer sees value in playing himself down to tell others’ stories - stories he could have envisioned when he was 16.
One update reg a question about meaty role: It’s like only if the movie has some thrilling content, it’s reaching box office but a movie like anbe sivam doesn’t have much of thrilling content but the story and dialogues worth more than the thrilling content but again it doesn’t successful at box office. How do we see this
The question by svk seems silly.. the role of an actor is to act with or without his personality added on to the character. Kamal is the one actor where it is very very tough to find kamalhasan in the character.. for other actors we need to find the character in the actors actual persona.. whereas for kamal it is very tough to find kamal persona in the role like virumandi or thenali or Guna it's out n out that character playing out in flesh n blood on screen.. so the question from svk he is just parroting some cliche lines saying the vcd acting is not natural
19:38 - True about Kamal vs Mohanlal. No doubt Mohanlal is a genius, but his subtleness in Drishyam was too cold IMO. No father would be so quiet and stone faced when seeing his daughter getting abused or tormented. Few other instances too he was just like Mohanlal behaves in real life. I didnt see a character, I saw Mohanlal. Even in Puli Murugan his subtle scenes are just usual Mohanlal stuff. No special accent, no meticulous characterization.
Dhanush and Vijay Sethupathy are the true successors of Kamal Haasan. Though I know there can never be another Kamal Haasan, Dhanush and Makkal Selvan comes close.
I would include Siddharth in that list. He is incredibly about Indian cinema, world cinema, politics, craft of filmmaking, etc. He also entered films to become a director but, then became an actor. Siddharth has openly expressed that he is a huge fan of Kamal. His interviews and films shows that he wants to be an actor and extremely passionate all areas of films.
Suriya experimenting movies ?😂😂 are you serious ? Except 24 and NGK every suriya movie released in last few years are commercial movies. Surya lost his stardom due to worst movies like singam series, anjaan and many others .
@@shyamkumar-yb4lx compared to the entertainers Ajith and Vijay, "Actor" Suriya has experimented more. Vijay to an extent has some quality movies like Thuppakki and kathhi, but ajith tho all were mass "rural" entertainers. And everyone knows how versatile Suriya is. Singam 1&2 were BB, 3 fucked up. And btw only Singam and Kanchana series are the successful series in TN industry lately.
Hey ram should be re-released with the Tamil family speaking Tamil, Shah Rukh Khan speaking Hindi, Marathi persons speaking Marathi and Subtitling the full movie with different language options...
In think none of latest director have a script for Kamal. Papanasam was also not his cup of tea. His intention was just to give that story to Tamil Audience. No one can act in Kamal Direction since they won't be able to deliver as it should be. Nayagan is the best movie of Kamal in terms of acting. And thanks to Mani Ratnam for the masterpiece. Rajni is a wise man and he took up style. Cause if he tries to compete with Kamal, we know what happens. Mohanlal fans always want to establish him as best actor in India. So they say Kamal Haasan is over acting. Just ignore these fools. Kameshwaran in MMKR is the best comic role of Kamal Absolutely naturalism is depending on the role in a particular movies. If you do the same thing in every movie, then you are not a versatile actor. Like Mohanlal do the same style in every movie. And his fans calls him the best natural actor and he is best in India. According to me he is just an actor who is not capable of doing anything else than so called natural acting
It's really sad to see that these young generations don't know that Kamal has done 231 films. They all think that Rajini, Vijay and Ajith are only big heroes. Our audience are only watching stupid commercial movies.
That's the beauty of kamalhasan..until he performed the role you will not even know how he is going to perform..if bharathiraja would have thought the same 16 vayathinale n a complete contrast sigappu rojakkal would not have happened..when I first saw virumandi I was blown away..I didnt know that he could do it.. because of his off screen persona with his abstract way of answering questions.. confusing way of putting things across..he somehow maintained the mystery of the actor.. even after so much of him in the public space with big boss.. if dhanush can fit in vetrimaran universe kamalhasan can excel but its upto vetrimaran whether he wants to work with KH
@@nonpartisanrealist7075 the director I want to see Kamal work with is actually Selvaraghavan . It will be interesting to.see Kamal.work with selvaraghavan or even Karthik Subbaraj . .
Sir hey Ram was the first complex screenplay of kamal sir . What is ur take on that . Moreover he gives both sides of the problem that is partition both from Hindu and Muslim side which generally most movies don’t do like give only one side of problem in let say movie like asuran where villain is a cardboard villain ??
What I meant is not much of the psychology of villain explored . In hey Ram , I mean u have the justification from both sides from their point of view of the loss suffered. I like movies that humanise villains by giving their point of view also . Same goes with Omar from vishwaroopam, there are moments u feel bad for him suffering from radiation’s though he kills a lot of people .
Is it Kamalism or Tamilism. A Critic should not show partiality Mr. Rangan. Kamal's Top 10 include few Telugu films as well that is bcoz of Telugu directors u didn't mention like Maniratnam.
11:11 I think Santhana Bharathi in Guna and Mahanadhi brought out the best performances of Kamal. I would go on to say these performances were better than Nayagan.
Both guns and mahanathi story and screen play by kamal santhana bharathi is just a director in chair but maniratnam truly brings out the best out of kamal in nayagan
20:25 It is interesting how you see kamal's interpretation of Velu Nayakar's reaction when his son dies. It seemed against the run of play when you compare the character over the rest of the movie. An awesome movie, a ma(ni)ster at work, one of the best performance in my view if not for that one scene. Just my view.
Okay this video wss a video which celebrates 60 yrs of kamalism👍, then he did a 45 yrs of rajijinism, and he titled the video like that and instead of celebrating he starts his " criticism" pls go get a lyf !!
Atlee will remake sakalakala vallavan with Kamal and shamelessly will call it his own story, although we all know that the same story made multiple rounds in 60s and 70s in multiple Indian languages. But who knows , Kamal who is behind cheap votes these days ,craves for controversial content and ready to play to the gallery , might well do an Atlee film.
@@jdb35 boss, he is doing ' Big boss' now and he said in one of his BR interviews that he is doing Big boss although he doesn't like reality shows but just to have a platform to connect with people when his movies have dried up. So he might do an Atlee to be in limelight. But the real question is whether Atlee will do with Kamal considering the relatively lesser mass pull KH has these days compared to Rajini, Ajith or Vijay.
BR always mentions “messaging” whenever he doesn’t like what the “message”. Usually films dealing with the oppressed like Asuran or Anbe Sivam, stuff related to the oppressed. He doesn’t care about “messaging” when it’s a propaganda film or even a star worship movie despite it having regressive “messages”. It’s clear BR doesn’t like the status quo being challenged or anything that makes him uncomfortable stuff like class or caste. Hence, why he doesn’t like P.A. Ranjith or movies like Asuran while adores upper caste-class based films of Mani Ratnam. Whatever filmmakers like Mani Ratnam say “is normal” while the others are “messaging”. The only exception is Pariyerum Perumal and that’s because the message was comfortable to him i.e. the oppressed should always try to connect with the oppressors non-violently even while they are being killed by them.
Coz this is Kalayagu & there is no accounting for taste in today's world.. There are so many jokers in this world whose Sensibility on Cinema is poor hence they cant understand nor appreciate Kamal's greatness!!!
Don't you think you are over hyping about Dhanush?, Not only in this video I am observing this propaganda in your couple of earlier videos as well. Do you have any production house and seeking some call sheet?
