Sheik Salma asks: Sir, I have been using Henna on my hair for the last 10 years with disastrous effects. It has led to hair thinning and my scalp is visible very clearly on the front. Please explain what I should do now.
In response to Sheik Salma’s query, Dr John Watts explained that commercial Henna brands available in the market are often laced with harmful chemicals that cause long-term damage to the hair including widespread hair thinning and shades of baldness. Even when they do not have any family history of baldness, they may face this problem.
“One should never trust Henna brands available in the market. Though they claim it is natural, it is often not so in reality. The hair roots on the scalp may face permanent damage after coming in contact with them over a period of time. It seems this has happened in your case,” explained Dr John Watts.
Though people are often forced to make use of Henna brands as an alternative to other chemical hair dyes due to social pressure to sport black hair, the chemical-laced Henna may also affect the quality of hair besides causing hair thinning and baldness in the long run.
Whether Kali Mehndi or Black Henna, whatever they are called and marketed, no one can be sure if they contain chemicals as such information may not be disclosed by the brands.
In fact, Dr John Watts pointed out that even a hair transplant procedure may not provide a proper solution in such cases as the donor hair quality from the back of the scalp may not be suitable to add density to the transplanted region due to poor quality grafts.
“Chemical henna dyed hair cannot be considered as good and healthy hair grafts as they might already have been damaged,” warned Dr John Watts, while urging people to avoid the temptation to use chemical mixed Henna brands for dying their hair black.
Precautions
If one cannot avoid using such commercial Henna due to social pressure, Dr John Watts suggested users apply them with the utmost caution. “The best way to apply Henna is to avoid letting it touch the scalp. Only let it touch your hair,” said Dr John Watts.
He further informed Sheikh Salma that some people may also face irritation and itching problems after using chemical-mixed Henna on their hair. In such cases, one should immediately stop using them and consult a dermatologist.
Safe Alternatives
However, it is safe to avoid chemical Henna from the market and opt for dermatologically tested safe hair dye. “There are some safe dermatologically tested brands available in the market including ALTRIS HD BLACK COL, vegetal bio colour and Indus Valley hair colours but they are a little costly,” informed Dr John Watts.
He explained that immediately after using these hair dyes, they may not provide the desired black shade. “One needs to use several coatings in quick intervals of 4-5 days to gain the proper dark shade but they are safe for use,” informed Dr John Watts.
Conclusion: In his concluding remarks, Dr John Watts advised Sheik Salma to immediately start medical treatment to recover the damage from using the chemical Henna by consulting a dermatologist. “They are the best experts to advise you which hair dye would suit your hair,” he said.
