Hey everyone! This is probably the juiciest video I've made all fall. I went to Harvard University with my friend, Angela, to ask Harvard students some interesting questions:
Who's the most famous person you know? (Barack Obama, Dixie D'Amelio, etc..)

I mean had to have great extracurriculars, essays as well. etc. You could have gotten a 4.9 GPA but didn't do anything else so obviously they wouldn't want someone like that

ig to some extent it is and isn't...like if you applied with a 4.0+ gpa, you're also going against many other applicants who have the same if not higher gpa. you'd stand out amongst "average" students but perhaps not among other applicants unless you have some other outstanding aspect of your profile

it probably wasn't the stats, there are lots of applicants to Harvard with 4.9 GPAs obviously you can't get in with a 2.0 but its really not special for a Harvard applicant to have a 4.7+ GPA

@@WellValUa STEM factors in very different majors. Biology and Computer Science, for example. Biology has a low employment rate without grad school. Computer Science gives you a lot of job opportunities with just a Bachelor's degree. Some engineering majors are better than others.

@@mr.toucan1585 I used to be jealous and resentful of people getting into Harvard and all the Harvard acceptance reaction stuff, but I'm past that now. College is so hyped up but it's really no big deal. The application process is a bunch of hocus pocus pandering about being "3rd generation, listing pointless extracurriculars, etc." It's all show. You start to realize that you're just another cog in the machine (not to get all edgy but it's true). Going to a school in a sea of "intellectuals" is probably more harmful than beneficial. The best thing you can do is to innovate, be a morally good person and not worry what others think about you. If I went to Harvard, I would get sucked up by negative feedback loops and eventually lose my sense of purpose.

@bluemingenius Many students don't know what they want to be dedicated to when they enter college so many (if not all) college applications do not require a major but it is optional & makes your resume look at least a little better if you have decided. The only major things most (not all) applications require are unweighted (depends on the school if they take weighted or unweighted but I think unweighted gives a better idea of how you will do) GPA, SAT, ACT, common app. essay, and (rarely) an interview. However, many colleges do offer courses students can take to see if a certain career is what they want to pursue by giving them a feel of the things they will need to know to see if it interests them. And also, a good amount of students constantly change their major as they feel the path they are on doesn't suit them & I believe because of how much majors can fluctuate, it is hard to require it for admission. Not sure if this helped, but I hope it makes sense.

It's simply acknowledging that their scores are likely higher than a lot of people's, and they don't want to come off as ignorant by simply saying their scores, specifically to avoid people commenting about their high scores.

Damn I couldn't even begin to compare to these kids. In HS (2 years ago), I had a 4.3 GPA, 1080 SAT, 24 ACT, and was an Illinois State Scholar. I got rejected from the University of Illinois Urbana computer science ( that was a very bad day) because they said my test scores were too low. Guess I was too dumb to go to college. I had other safety schools and received acceptances from schools I didn't even apply to. I was accepted to Illinois State University and study information systems web development (computer science with some business classes). I have a 4.0 and sit at the top of my class in the School of Information Technology. Following my freshman year, I received a scholarship and the award for Distinguished Freshman from the School of IT. I also go my first internship as a freshman which was a rarity. Lesson: Don't give af about rejections from these universities. I'm still salty, but I know U of I missed out. Everything happens for a reason and, you're meant for better than what you can see right in front of you. They don't deserve you.

The best way to think about it is that stats are the pre requisite. Everyone there will have high stats, but to stand out, it's the extra curriculars and achievements made outside of school. Sports and being apart of many organizations will create an extra buffer on your application, making you more of a well rounded person instead of just someone who does school.

If you apply for financial aid, you may be surprised with a cheaper cost of attendance offer than even the cost of community college or public universities. I don't go to Harvard or another Ivy League, but I go to an expensive private university with a cost of attendance at over $71k per year, and I got almost all of it covered in grants and scholarships that never have to be repayed and got federal loans to cover most of the cost per year that remained, so I was able to attend for only about $5k upfront cost for each semester or $10k per year, which is 60+% cheaper than the cost of a public university in my home state. Don't let finances discourage you from applying because you never know what they'll offer until you try. You can apply for even more scholarships in addition to what the school offers too.

These people are in harvard, however some of them are still studying worthless degrees which won't lead to a high paying job in the future, yet they're paying even more money to go to an ivy league school. Goes to show that the most important factor in being successful financially is intentionality in how you go about obtaining an income and intentionality in investing. Very very intelligent people like the ones shown in this video are still very susceptible to being poor their entire life, because due to their intelligence they become arrogant in their ability to navigate any subject and may overestimate their personal finance abilities. Food for thought, Success in personal finance isn't going to find you, you have to go out and find it.

For the future, could you please consider not asking for students' stats? EC's and essays are much more unique and ultimately help get people accepted. I think asking people for stats diminishes the person to a few numbers and just discourages your viewers. And to be honest, whether an individual has an ACT of 36 or 30 doesn't make much of a difference to people watching; most high school students already know they should strive for the highest score they can (plus the range is posted online). I hope you can please consider focusing on the more unique aspects of your interviewees. Otherwise, really enjoyed the video :)

as a sophomore at a fellow boston school, nobody in the area is allowed to enter into dorms that arent yours, you cant hang out in groups above 20 or you get suspended, not many in person classes, etc. etc.
