Asking sailors what are the BEST and WORST rates in the NAVY!! 2023 Edition. 

For anybody deciding to join the Navy, word of advise... your choice of rate should depend on what you would like to do outside the Navy, no matter how many years you serve, you can't serve forever and need to make that decision based on the availability and necessity of your job in the Navy and how it can translate on the outside. Please don't take other people advise on making this decision... get informed from your detailer, and make a decision for yourself.

The best/worst rates will vary by person and what they want out of the military. Some people will want desk jobs, some will want to work with their hands. Some will want to have time to pursue college and some will want on the job experience. I'd suggest figuring out what you want, and then asking someone which jobs can help meet those goals.

As a former EM (Electricians Mate), the best rate is ND (Navy Diver). Great community, great job during enlistment and when you leave the Navy. Worst job, CS! When I was “cranking” I couldn’t wait to be done. I can’t imagine that being my everyday day gig while in the Navy. Number 2 job in the Navy is EM.

This video was entirely on the surface side of the Navy. So if there's anyone going into the submarine side, best rate is easily FT (fire control technician). Work load is lightweight compared to all other tech rates in the submarine. I do feel for them though, when out at sea, because they have to work with the raw data that sonar techs (STS) gives them, which isn't always the best. We do what we can, but we're not perfect. Sorry to all current or perspective FTs out there. Our PBB operators are usually ass until they get some time in, and our class operators can get pretty overwhelmed in high contact density areas and forget to update important information on our contacts, which can fuck up an FT's contact solution. Worst rate... I'd say it's a tie between MMA (machinist's mate auxiliary, or colloquially known as a-gangers) and TM (torpedomen). Sometimes a-gangers can seem like a bunch of stuck-up pricks, but it's totally justified due to the amount of work they have to do. Please do not call them janitors or plumbers (especially plumbers) because they will fuck you up. They also own a lot of your out-of-rate checkouts so be nice to them... at least until you get your dolphins, but still be nice to them. TM, at least in my boat, had some hard times. They were a full division when I showed up, then became undermanned after all the senior guys left a few months later. When I detached, TM-div was hurting for [competent] people. They lead the charge on everything related to weapons evolutions. They have an ass-load of maintenance to do for a division of like 5 people (including LPO and LCPO), and they can get a bit snippy sometimes. MMA and TM work hours are kind of ass, to say the least. When you come in at 0730 and go home a bit shy over 1800 almost every work day, the stress really piles up. TL;DR: best submarine rate = FT. Worst submarine rate = MMA or TM. But as bad as it gets for MMA, the skills you learn in that rate are very valuable in the civilian sector.

One of the best, I will say a YEOMAN (YN)…I love it. Much props to ppl who do the physical labor to keep the ship going. Much respect.

It is also advisable to conduct research to identify career areas projected to experience shortages. For instance, many professions within the healthcare industry are facing critical shortages. Then, look for corresponding rates in the military.

I wanted to be a CS but I heard about it from multiple people and I’m glad I did 😭 but I have to retake my asvab because I don’t qualify for anything else like I’m off by less than 6 points for everything else😭😫 this video definitely helped me decide what to go for

When it comes to rates for transferring out gotta be CT/IT/ET(FC) and the nuclear rates. You’ll never be jobless outside of the fleet

see yn is easy yes but i literally could not sit there all day and do computer work. i gatta be hands on and moving but also i wanna sit there inside :/ i’m torn between that and OS

Selection of rate is important, but for those who may not be able to score high enough to get the exact job they want, I would suggest to still consider joining in a different specialty, as there are still many general military benefits to serving for one contract term.

My opinion: EMN (Electrician’s Mate Nuclear, Surface). Bonus and advancement benefits of being a nuke, without the same work/controls stringency that ETNs have, and the constant hot Machinery space watchstanding of MMNs. Can also get out of the Navy and make pretty decent money, even without a degree.

hello thank you for the video!! i was wondering if you are able to switch rates after being in for 2yrs of a 5yr active contract. my son is an AO and i want him to switch to something that will transfer to a high paying job outside the Navy and does everyone have to go on deployment regardless of the rate?

Rate is Navy enlisted "rank". Jobs or MOS are ratings. Example a rate is SN AN PO1 CPO MCPO, rating is BM MM AT ET CTT. That's why forms we fill out ask our rate/rank because the Navy and Coast Guard enlisted have rates while their officers have ranks, the other branches have only ranks. I believe the combining of rate and rating to get the MMSN BM2 AT1 ABHC AFCM is what created this common misconception.

RS is the best because we have 4 sales oulets that support the entire ships crew. Worst is CS.. I love my CS’s but man they have crazy cranking hours, always cleaning and stingy with portions 🤧😂

You do a great job getting very natural and seemingly honest responses in your interviews, but the information is not as valuable as it could be for potential sailors because civilians have no idea what any of these acronyms mean. It was great that you added a definition of dirtbag, but you should have done it for all the rates as well.
