So for this audience, there will be 3 ways: To DIY, to engage individual contractors or to engage The Makeover Guys. This strictly depends on whether do you have money, time, and peace of mind.

My 2 cents of advise, if you are young and this is your first home, do not overspent on renovation. You do not know if you are going to stay in that house in the future and if you were to rent it out or sell it in the future, your renovation will be wasted. Another experience with renovation is that if you were to do it yourself, you will usually blow your budget. Renovate it in a way you can rent it out or you will not regret if you were to sell your house. After done my own renovation twice, I am done with doing it myself. That is why I think the idea of using company like Makeover Guys is good. That is what I am planning to do when my 4th unit VP :-P

Let me breakdown: Fixed - Walls, floorings - 2-3% Variable - Furnitures / security systems / e.g. - 7-8% When you move out, you probably cannot take those that are already fixed. But variables like furnitures, you can take with you. So you can invest more in good quality furnitures.

Hi Sean, my bad experience during my first home renovation: 1. Visualization via communication: When Both the contractor and I agreed to do a "drop" ceiling design at the living room, without any written description or drawings the outcome was so disappointed as he used the old school "triple drop" profile instead of a single drop profile. 2. Payment issue: Since I hired the contractor to do the renovation, the contractor engaged his own electrician and plumber as a team to complete the task. One day the electrician came to me and seek for the payment in advance, the contractor had agreed for the amount so I paid him up to 80% of his fees even though he only completed 30% based on his job scope. Now the electrician ran away, the contractor said he only recommend his "team" to me and the payment method shall be paid separately. Have you had any issue on this before? What is the schedule of payment for a home renovation? 50% before completion and 50% after completion?

Thanks for sharing! Hiring professional definitely save alot of time and headache if one can afford. Renovation is something that most people don't do everyday. To learn from scratch and do it hands on takes alot of time and effort.

My husband and I renovate our house based on practical usage and future buyer flexibility in design . We didn't do built-in wardrobe, or tv cabinets, because we will be selling the house after 30 years.

I think since it's 30 years, you can do up a bit lah because the environment is also an investment especially if we're working at home now. The right furniture or mood will help boost productivity. Typical asian mindset, kiam siap hahahahahahah. *actually me too=)

Buying a first house that can be your last house is a good idea as well if you make an informed decision on it and. Assuming it last for a lifetime, you will no doubt save money and effort in the long run. Buying and moving to a new home does come with its cost as well.

Regarding home renovation, better research and study instead of just hiring one firm to do it all for you without any due diligence. Especially those firms that have strong internet presence, what they show in their portfolios look good but actually everything is just cheap and cannot withstand wear and tear within 5 years.

I am having the same problem!! My minimalist budget is already reaching 170,000 😂 😭 its all own stay fault. Too bad the makeover guys cannot make it to Batu kawan ecoworld.

I already ka boom. 🆘 My friend told me the renovation should keep the Max to 10% of the property price but a bit over budget. Don’t know why I have this thinking, next time I move house I can bring over to new place

Well there's no fixed percentage, for eg 10% to adhere lah. It's entirely up to personal requirements and affordability.

If you make informed decision about purchasing your 1st home as own stay, there's barely any reason why 10 to 20 years down the road you will think of moving.

To me, the age of the building will always be a good indication to move out. Cost of up keep will always be ignore by lots of home owners. I live in a generation house, now that I plan to move out, I find myself having to spend a large amount of money to make it presentable to buyers just to get on the market price. Of course there are lots of people who would take care of their house, keeping it in tip top condition, but that is not on my parents mind back then.

my new house built up 3300sqft , quoted my 2 id company ( top10 best id in malaysia maybe?) A id company quote me RM650k B id company quote me RM220 per sqft built up now im stuck in renovation ,i didnt know that id nowadays renovate price so crazy one...haha

May I know should a low-mid range income earner should still opt for a renovator anyway? Is there a secret wisdom which professionals hold, where it is missing in DIY homeowners? I heard that we can't simply alter certain structures in our house?

As this audience clarified that it's a new apartment that they're moving in, hence it's gonna be surface fittings only. For highrise, we CANNOT alter structures. For landed strata, we CANNOT change the facade. For individual titled property, you can do anything you want upon approval from the local authorities.
