Step into the 17th century (in miniature!) with Curator Will and Conservators Robert and Dana as they dress the delicate Nuremberg Dolls' House.
Made in Germany in 1673 (as written on the chimney), this is the oldest dolls' house in the V&A's collection. At this time, dolls' houses were made to reflect the lives of the wealthy people who owned them - in this case an apothecary (chemist).
Join Dana as she prepares and manoeuvres the extremely pillowy bed, and Robert as he assesses the condition of the intricate metal decorations, including plates, dishes and exquisitely painted pewter tankards. Watch as Will as oversees the operation, placing the tiny furniture into the house just as as it would have originally been.
Timestamps:
00:00 Ringing the bell
00:20 Getting ready for display
00:35 Making the bed
02:44 Hanging a unicorn's head above the door
03:44 Unpacking and checking condition of miniature metal kitchenware
07:27 Arranging the kitchen

For some reason, dollhouses always seemed like such a “modern” toy. Maybe Victorian era at its oldest. But to see such a beautiful and detailed thing, especially one so old, is absolutely amazing!
@Wakeupgrandowl

It must be fascinating to See a display of them - something charming and bizarre about this one is the incredibly inconsistent scale despite excellent craftsmanship! So that it’s wonky and amateurish in appearance but still finely made. Funny thing.

Oh they where around alright especially in now-a-day Netherlands. There is by the way a very well made movie that catchs just such a 17th century Dutch dollhouse and it´s story. It is called "The Miniaturist" should be easily findable on youtube.

I hate how stingy people are being about what counts as ASMR. This 100% counts - it would fit right in on the “unintentional ASMR” channel. When I heard them speaking I’m soft spoken tones, I got so excited. It’s perfect!

Well they did try, with the mic pointing at the bubble wrap... As a first attempt at 'unintentional' ASMR, good effort. But the men aren't really quiet or reverential enough....sniggering isn't the best ASMR approach, oops! Two people is also one too many. And for me, they've just not got voices I would peg as particularly calming, sorry boys! Whereas the lady at the start (by herself) has a voice MADE for ASMR. So would guess museums, galleries and ASMR go naturally together, so a consistent effort could really grow this channel. Without being too demanding, also I recommend a script to describe the history of an artefact... Random waffle isn't compelling.

That’s probably because they weren’t intended for the "modern" purpose I guess. It was more of a "model" like a model plane or ships etc, that adults spend their time with today rather than what we would nowadays call a "dollhouse". Of course there are still people who do this as a hobby and who fully decorate dollhouses in a certain style and put expensive things into it… but most people would connect the term with a children’s toy. Not what people would have used it for int the 17th century.
