I really enjoyed hearing this story about your quest to become fluent in English. I am middle aged now, but took two semesters of German in college, and did quite well. Unfortunately, I did not continue to take German language courses, even though one of the professors suggested that I should. It is still a major regret of mine to this day that I did not commit to learning German. Your story of hard work & determination to learn English is very inspirational. Perhaps I can find the motivation, even at my age, to learn your native language of German and achieve some degree of fluency in it. Divi, I am amazed at how consistently perfect your videos are. You have put me to sleep more than any other asmrtist, and I listen to about 100 regularly. Thank you for the work you do, my mind never shuts up at night and i often have racing thoughts, this is perfect to slow down and relax

32:00 I once got caught up in an argument between two strangers at an airport. One of them was from Boston, Massachusetts. The other guy was from San Antonio, Texas. Both of them were native-born in the USA. Both of them were speaking English. But their accents were both SO STRONG - one "New England" accent and one "Deep Texas" accent - that I could not understand either of them. I caught maybe one out of every three words they said. I had to excuse myself, it was so hard trying to follow what they were saying. And I'm also a native-born USA English speaker. But I'm originally from New Jersey, so my accent is much closer to what most people consider to be standard American English like what you hear in movies. And US English is quite different from British English, too. And the Irish and Scotts and Welsh all have different accents that are sometimes very hard to understand unless you grew up with it. Then there's South African English, Australian English, and even New Zealand has a slightly different dialect and accent to it compared to the Australians. I think that sometimes uneducated people might make fun of someone else's dialect or accent because it's hard to understand. I've been guilty of it occasionally when I was a child... but never to their face, just sometimes I make a joke with my friends about it after that person leaves. Trying to be funny, not trying to be mean about it. But those who have ever studied the world or traveled away from their home region will know better, especially those who have tried to learn a second language. And your English is pretty good. You speak clearly, you enunciate, and if you hadn't said you're German I might actually assume you're Australian based on your accent. So for anyone else who is reading this and trying to learn a second language... she's right. The best way to learn it and improve is to actually USE it. Speak it. Hear it. Have a conversation in the new language. Then another. Then another. Immerse yourself in it. Until you can do it without asking native speakers to slow down for you. But never worry about your accent, since EVERYBODY has one anyway.
Hi Divi, absolutely loved this video and as a brit myself i personally have always thought you had a much more British/Aussie English accent and I've watched your videos regularly for a good few years now lol, either way you speak English incredibly well like so well in fact i genuinely thought you was Australian for a while haha. I start drifting off into thought as the video plays; randomly, my ears tune in to see what she’s talking about. Me: “I.. must’ve only watched the no-voice videos, because I don’t remember an accent. Is that.. Irish? No.. it’s.. somewhere nearby though for sure.” Her: Starts talking about people questioning her accent. Me: ??? “When did this video come out?8 hours ago. I get to experience lore ‘live’. 😯” For the record, I’d like to say German was my 2nd guess 🫡. Very relaxing videos regardless of origin or background. Growing up in America, I was always told that I sounded British (I grew up with a speech impediment that I kind of adapted into slightly different sounds for most vowels and some consonants). Then I spent about 25 years traveling between USA, UK, Italy, and Germany. My friends and family like to say that they have "no idea" where I came from when I talk....suppose if they can understand me, then it really doesn't matter.
Awh my last comment was on your accent last video, I love your accent it’s uniqueness lends itself to asmr but was shocking to know you’re native German speaker

Hi Divi, you actually do sound American at least when you whisper (Midwest dialect). Everyone has quirky accent words passed on from their parents or teachers.
Languages. Well I can only speak one language, though I've attempted French and German. I talk so little anyway that I can barely remember how to speak my native language. But, I'm good at dialects. So, if you have an interest in learning english dialects probably the best place to start is with Peter Sellers. He was a ninja of dialects. Listen to the Goon Show. And then watch all his movies. Try to memorize your favourite scenes and copy the way he talks. Hope you will try them out on future asmr videos.
I loved this story, it made me think of my own journey learning English. I’m Dutch and people often tell me they can’t really place my accent either. My first contact with English was through watching the discovery channel with my dad, which had a lot of American English, but I also watched TopGear which was British English. Reading the subtitles in Dutch with the original English audio helped me learn the language quite fast. Later I started watching a lot of RU-vid, which caused me to lean more towards American English. I really dislike the accent most Dutch people have while speaking English, just hearing it makes me cringe. So I also put in a lot of effort to sound as American as possible. Eventually I started watching more people from England as well Australia and realized I like their accents a lot better. I try to tone down the American accent a bit these days and landed on a happy neutral with influences from all over. Btw, I love it when that smidge of Australian comes through in your accent. It’s like an unintentional trigger for me, very soothing.
(Spends 14 minutes explaining a story in English) "and I don't think I'm fluent in English yet." I think you can call yourself fluent, :D. You don't have to be indistinguishable from a native in order to be fluent.
I’m one of the ones who have thought Australian since day one. I saw some of your German videos and realized you were German which made the Australian vowels in your English so strange.
Way less? Totally forgot for a sec which channel this was because when voice ASMR is effortless it's easy to forget you may be trying to do auditory when you're not talking.
it actually makes a lot of sense to me that your favorite English teacher was Irish! while some words you say do sound like a typical British/English accent (also, know, often, most, video) a lot of them sound more like an Irish accent (do, get, talking, now, a lot, light, past) i'd say to my ears your English sounds 70% American, 15% Irish 10% British and 5% Australian. :)

I’m sorry, it is kinda funny hearing the reason… as you literally slip in an out of American, British, Irish, and Australian… 😅 it’s unpredictable for sure. Some people do “unintelligible rambling” you could do “unpredictable rambling.” 😂
I've never really detected any German accent I think. You mostly sound like you're speaking with an American accent, but occasionally some Australian comes out.
Personally im not a fan of ramble asmr but if i could listen to some itd only be Divi's. P.S I hope she looks into 8D/16D functions/software. She already makes the best asmr but 8 or 16D effects would make it incredible.
