Lmao I loved this. I feel like Long Island and Jersey accents are picking up in popularity lately, and I'm kind of wondering, for people who didn't grow up around that accent, what it was that gave them comfort in those accents specifically. But I think one possibility (that I definitely apply to myself) is that they saw Toni Collette as Cole's mother in _Sixth Sense,_ and especially that conversation in the car towards the very end of the movie, and that just, like, flipped an ASMR switch for them. I can see her being a comfort character, too. The mom is really endearing and earnest, and she clearly loves the hell out of her little boy. She tries SO HARD to cheer him up from this funk that he's in that he won't explain to her. I bet a lot of us rewatched JUST that scene for the nostalgia and asmr. While we're on the topic of influential media, since media literacy (as well as just... *actual* literacy) rates are dropping, I just want to gently but firmly remind everyone (with only a moderate amount of hyperbole): *Every fifth sentence out of this character's mouth is a RED FLAG.* If your actual parent constantly gaslights and guilt-trips you, that's a form of abuse. I've seen a concerning trend in the last five-to-ten years of people making light of both their own abuse and the (similar or same) abuse of friends, relatives, schoolmates, etc. on social media. Especially formats like TikTok, Instagram Reels, anf RU-vid Shorts. I don't mean in a way of dealing with your trauma with dark humour, either. Like, the punchline IS the victim. The punchline IS the abuse. I would really like to see these trends take a nosedive in the immediate future, for the sake of younger generations who deserve to see a world where abuse is consistently, and with careful consideration, dealt with through the appropriate channels within a reasonable timeframe, where the child is protected, and the adult - if at all possible - is fully rehabilitated and given a second chance (where reasonable). The high rates of CSA and DV around the world are concerning enough; I would at least like to see a society that takes mental health as seriously as it takes fatal diseases. Much love to the artist and to the audience. Take care of yourselves! 🍵😌
