I know this is only meant to be entertainment, and I did really enjoy it, but I can't bring myself to take the mermaid's request about spreading the word on pollution seriously only because in this scenario mermaids clearly have the capacity to speak with humans about it judging by what the mermaid says about learning some human words. Clearly, they did not do this if it is still as much of a problem in this hypothetical world as it is in ours. If the merfolk have been suffering from this and they are aware that humans are intelligent, but also the cause of this problem, why not approach them? Human convenience seems to outweigh environmental destruction in the eyes of many, but perhaps it may not outweigh the lives of sapient beings, at least for most people. Said people would be far more likely to listen to an actual, genuine merfolk emissary than some random person claiming to be a mermaid princess, anyhow.
