I really kinda hope this is the case! Because on the 1 hand, smarmy archmage sounds handsome & deadly. But on the other, I wanted to bite his lip off & make every moment he tries to woo/control us to be as difficult as possible. 😈

Forcing marriage to gain the blessing wouldn't make sense because too many people would go for that option. If anything it would guarantee his ass gets cursed. But if the one carrying the blessing could only extend it if they came to love that person? Now that would be one hell of a caveat and one that couldn't be forced or manipulated. Edit: It just occurred to me after posting but, the listener could easily book it into the cursed lands to keep him at bay as a last resort. If he is foolish enough to bring them there that is, only to find he can't pursue her.
It was his mistake Choosing to go for the force option, he could of tried at least disguising himself and try making the listener fall in love slowly with him instead of kidnapping her outright

I'm drawn to the idea of his discovering that the wedding thing won't quite as well as he hopes without having the love of the listener, and he starts to woo her with a calculated barrage of temptation and affection.

Right! He basically forced the listener to marry him for his own advantage, using the listener’s powers. And not only that he threatened them and such. 😤
I personally think this is better than most of those yanderes that would just kidnnap you and go "I love you so much and you will learn to love me". I mean, this mage does provide with an actual incentive ("this is going to happen either way but if you don't cooperate your father dies") and doesn't go with fake love but does want the listener out of pragmatic reasons and some lust. Like: Him: just be good and this doesn't have to be painful for you. Me: the best I can offer is courtesy, cold unwilling compliance over blackmail, some fake smiles and adress you as "my lord" instead of cheesy nicknames. 😕 Him: ... that's actually what I meant. 🙄 Me: oh, thank goodness, I thought you would want me to pretend to return romantic feelings. 😌 Him: what feelings? I told you I just wanted your blessing to extend to me. .... What kind of unstable insecure people do you usually deal with? 🤔 Edit: this hasn't aged well. 😅
