If any of you live in LA area, hit Bhan Kanom Thai!! I was SO excited to find that they had layer cake, luk chup, and pretty much all of the thai treats I had been DYING to try from these vids. I spent an embarrassing amount of money there, and it was worth every cent 😂

I made my own Luk Chup! Took me about 8 hours. Still couldn't get a super thick agar agar coating, but I really enjoyed the flavour and texture. I definitely don't get that snap from biting into the Luk Chup. But, as I can't buy that product where I am, I'm pretty pleased. Wish I could share a picture with you all.

@@laurakearney2956 from my understanding it’s a sweet and sometimes flavoured mungbean paste coated in agar agar powder, then hand painted to look like the fruits.

For those who want the layer cake, you can get smaller versions (or more like normal sized ones) if they sell it at a Thai or even Vietnamese shop. I personally don’t know the differences between them, but I do recognize that there is a Vietnamese version that looks pretty similar to it, and also is pandan and mung bean flavored. The texture is similar and everything. If you know the difference, lemme know!

I tried one here that are selling in Asian shop in US. They are different from Thailand. In Thailand the layer cakes are softer and chewier.

This cake is a traditional dessert in Viet Nam too, I read it somewhere and they called it "mung bean cake (Huế style)". The inside is mung bean paste, they'll shape them, colour them n then coat it with agar.

It depends on which country you buy it. If you buy it in Thailand it could be cheaper, but if you buy it in America this will be expensive asf.

You can try making luk chup at home. I am not a Thai person and had never made them before but they turned out well. You need a bag of dry mung beans, canned coconut milk, sugar, agar agar powder, and food coloring.

I just checked them out. It starts from 250 baht/pound to 600-800 baht/pound depends on a design or flavors you like. But if you buy it individual. Ican get a small box of luk chup for 30-40 baht.

That layer cake look similar with ours in Indonesia we call it lapis cake which mean layer cake too it made of rice flour with coconut milk, one of my childhood favorit traditional cake, I used to eat it layer by layer so fun in that time lol
