It's kinda a shame how France has lost so much of its linguistic diversity in the past few centuries. France had a period of very heavy enforcement of Parisian French across all of France, leading to the loss of many regional languages of the D'Oc family and also dialects of the D'Oil French Language. The enforcement of Language rules by the Academie Francaise certainly doesn't help, but that's another issue altogether. I generally think it's a terrible shame when a central language authority (often from a richer and urban centre) tells other regions how to speak their own language. Live and let speak! Italy is a great example of how it's done right. Most Italians can speak 'Italian', aka Tuscan Italian. But at home, they just speak another language (Sardinian, Sicilian, Neopolitan etc, all of which are regarded as unique languages within Italy). Germany is somewhat similar, although the line between language and dialect there is very blurry (with some Low Franconian 'dialects' being essentially the same language as Dutch but are regarded as dialects of German - and which German, there are two, High and Low German, with modern standard German being the High variety). It's truly a very complex topic!
@MelangeASMR
@MelangeASMR 2 года назад
True, German is absolutely wild. Native speakers can't understand each other half the time because the dialects are so different.

I was just thinking about this the other day- the loss or diminishment of French dialects/languages. But some live on in other places, like Acadian French in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

French person who studied linguistics here! Most “dialects” are actually languages, so the terms you discuss and question throughout the video are actually quite a good debate to have. Dialects are usually derived from the primary language, so even though the word dialect has been used for minor languages, we’re trying to use the word language more and more. Very instructive video, I enjoyed it!
@MelangeASMR
@MelangeASMR 2 года назад
Hey, thanks for your comment! It might be a bit of a German-language perspective too where there's more of a tendency ot use dialect (at least that's my impression but I'm also not a linguist). It definitely has a negative connotation, though, sadly, so I can see the shift towards another term being a good thing that might help preserve some local language varieties. (If you know any text or author off the top of your head that discusses that terminology shift, I would be super interested to hear about it, but if not please don't worry about it!)
@KayDvn
@KayDvn 2 года назад
@@MelangeASMR I’ll need to find my lessons again because it’s usually excerpts but whenever I find some references I will! Dialects definitely got a negative connotation in France too. It came partly from the decision to make French the official language. But again I will link references when I’ve got the time to find them! 😊

Born and raise in the earth of occitania, unfortunately only few expressions and accents remain from the Time where it was a largely spoken language. In fact it's due to politicals décision during the past century that have clasified régional dialects as "patois", and devalued those who speaks it. The aim was to unify the country in one unique language. But today these "patois" are more and more teach, and i believe and Hope that more and more peuple will be able to speak and understand occitan for exemple !

I imagine it's meant to be half a thousand (half a mil)?

Like your content on languages, I just want to say that 1) Provencal is spoken also in Italy, aside the dialects of Provencal and Italian spoken in Liguria and Torino. 2) Creoles are an interesting subject about French too! Trinidadian-Venezuelan french creole is one of those obscure ones that no one knows about but that had a strong influence in the culture of their original region.

These videos of the origins and dispersal of language are great. As is the intermixing between them. So much to understand from language about the origins of how civilizations have evolved. The blood groups and genetics of people inter-related with the languages would be very interesting. Noticed aspects of this in the French video where the Basque country is close by but language very different to the high RH negative blood type of the Basque. I am very glad that French is growing rather than shrinking in its use. Was surprized that Romanian was also a part of the romantic languages. Good and informative in a very relaxing manner. Thanks.
@MelangeASMR
@MelangeASMR 2 года назад
I didn't know about Romanian either for a long time. Considering the name of both country and language, it seems quite obvious lol. Of course there is more Slavic (and some Turkish and Hungarian) influence than in the Western romance languages. Thank you so much, I'm really happy I can keep you interested in these 😊

Louisiana French gets complicated because it didn't start with Acadian resettlement, nor end with their arrival. Many french descendants carry non-Acadian surnames, but later all morphed into the anglicized "kayjun" label. Though also the application of that label by outsiders in the early 20th century, and it's later adoption by some of them, highlighted a cleavage of identity along the lines of English/American sensibility of racial definition. But anyway, yes, many of the settlers came from coastal regions near Bordeaux. I've wondered how Occitanian their language of the latter half of the 1600s was in its origins. Later, so many brought forms of French from other regions, including after the Revolution. Also much of the French spoken in nouvelle Orleans was extinct after the US Civil War, while the rural folk continued on until the first world war, due to geographical, topographical isolation in the river delta and the western side of the State. It still humors me to hear a Canadian Acadian speak in French and then speak Canadian English with its particular vowel sounds. Also a while back in another channel's video or some reading online, it struck me to hear a specific word from Occitan, without which, we would not have a common word or term for something in English. I forget the word, but there are so many examples of such things. A misfortune to be losing aspects of the intangible "patrinomie" as they say.

Just one little detail I would like to add : « Gallia » did not really exist. It was the name Roman Empire had given to the lands that would become France much later. But in reality, Gallia was composed by different people with different habits, traditions and celtic languages (so there was no people claiming they were « Gallian » or something). However, we unfortunately lost our celtic roots as they were only transmitted orally. So every written sources describing this area that we have only come from the Romans, which Gallian people became themselves in the end (as populations got mixed during the Gallo-Roman period). We know nothing about our very first ancestors, including about their languages.
@MelangeASMR

The is no catalonian regions, there is Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic islands where different occitanian dialects are spoken (catalonian, valencian and balearic or majorcan)

Catalan it’s no Occitan it’s a language that comes from but no the same language…
@rrobles9727
@rrobles9727 2 года назад
@@angyliv8040 No that's nationalistic catalonian politics. Valencian and balearic are dialects of occitanian just like catalonian, not catalonian dialects. The language of the kingdom of Aragón was provenzal, another dialect of occitanian.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion! I'm afraid I know very little about Zulu, but I would love to do a more general video on language families in Africa.

I'll probably do a more general one on the Romance languages soon, but I'm curious about Italian dialects, so let's see. Might take a bit!
