Fujiwara's voice actress, Uchida Shu, is such a talented cutie! She grew up in Australia and speaks fluent English. She has a role in the Love Live! Nijigasaki story and here's hoping she gets more roles!
The reason she gets picked so many times during Japanese literature class it's because Fujiwara has the same family name as the noble family under whose court classical Japanese authors like Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shonagon used to attend. Also, the small fluffy brows, pale skin and wide forehead were considered peak fashion in Heian Japan (10th to 12th century AD)
I was thinking that her appearance was like Ancient Japanese art. So that’s why they assumed that she’d be good at it, she looks so old fashioned. But I didn’t know about her family name being so important. But I had a feeling I was missing something there so thank you for that
It's actually a direct reference to Fujiwara no Michitsuna no haha, the author of the Kagerô Nikki (ca. 974). She had very high status in the Heian-Period and was very admired for her skills in literature. In this literature piece she is writing a lot about her sadness and heartbreak because her husband doesn't come to visit her often anymore. I am assuming that the last thing she said is actually a quote from the Kagerô Nikki, because it fits the theme. Kagerô Nikki is still a very important classic literature piece today :)
@@DasBubblegum Thanks for pointing it out. I just though of Fujiwara no Michinaga, as he was the one pulling the string at the height of splendor in the Heian Court. Tbh, I never got to read the Kagerō Nikki original text since I moved on from kotengo to kanbun kundoku but I plan to in the future. Thanks for your insight!
@@nacl2002 Yuu: I'm a VA and I speak fluent English! Director: Okay great! We want you to voice a character who understands no English at all. ... Yuu: *No problem yo*
I would love to speak English because I'm from Brazil, but because we Brazilians have to speak English instead of you Americans speaking PORTUGUESE?? 🤨
I find how she used "Miss Olivia" as an equivalent to Olivia-san quite funny, since no one addresses their friend/classmate like that in English. But again, funny is the essence of this anime 🤣
The way she mixes English words in Japanese grammatical structure is funny too, now that I'm starting to learn a bit (e.g. na-adjectives, ga/wa topic markers): "Miss Olivia ga English wa impossible" "Miss Olivia to same-na club"
Like the other comment said, she is of Japanese blood but she grew up in Australia(and is Australian nationality wise) with her first language being English.
That's the irony, just as how Olivia looks like a typical American yet only speaks Japanese since she grew up in Japan. Olivia is also pressured to speak English when she just can't
Such funny, many laughter how they do be doing that? It's almost like they did it on purpose. Why is your comment makes me so irrationally upset? For God sake
Some people seem to genuinely find nosebleed scenes funny for some reason. Haven't a clue why. Most of them aren't all that funny (with a few exceptions such as that one time in Kill La Kill). Shows I've seen like Asobi Asobase, Konosuba, and Olympia Kyklos are genuinely funny.
From her face looking like a classic Japanese illustration, the placement of distinct english words in her sentences so you actually get the gist of what she's saying without subtitles, to the horrible recorder cover of Star Bangle Banner. This was incredibly hilarious.
A fun detail is that her last name is Fujiwara, which was a powerful Japanese clan during the Heian period, which is where her appearance is based off of (Heian Period Court Women).
after watching this video, I immediately went to look up the anime only to find out she's only in 2 episodes. my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
I wonder how well this translated to japanese audiences. With how often you hear engrish in anime, it's difficult to know if they have an ear for what actual fluent English sounds like. Shu is a treasure, hopefully she gets more work, feels like I'm being spoiled hearing actual English in anime.
This is possibly the best representation of my thoughts in my brain. I speak both Cantonese and english and I can fit either into sentences. This seriously is a representation of how I can physically piece it all together
now, I appreciate more of the VA's effort here, thanks Joey's friend for sharing your bad-ass moment in the podcast and enhancing other character's development even if it's little. we want to see more of the VA skills in other anime as well.
After watching this video I searched the anime in the hopes of watching more of Fujiwara, but discovered she's not the main character. Now I want an anime featuring Fujiwara's monologues, she's just too funny.
@1:18 Oh my gosh what’s happening?! Miss Olivia が English は impossible? Incredible. 🤣🤣🤣 I love how her facial expression remains so neutral while saying all these funny things. Makes it even more funnier.
She starts hating classic literature, goes on random gathering information on Olivia mission, falls in love, gets rejected, ends up understanding classic lit from the shock. That's character development.
The fact her design is based on traditional Japanese standard beauty, yet she speaks the most english out of all of them, and then there's Olivia who's the total opposite
so the swiss looking white girl with the blonde hair and blue eyes who just moved from some european country speaks perfect japanese and struggles with english but the asian girl who could literally be considered the pinnacle of beauty in 10th to 12th century heian period speaks perfect english and struggles with japanese huh
The most English speaking looking person in the room cant speak English but is fluent in Japanese whereas the most Japanese looking person cant speak Japanese but is fluent in English. Exactly why i love this anime.
I legit discovered this show from this clip alone and I already love the quirkiness of Fujiwara-san. She reminds me of Osaka from Azumanga Daioh!!! 😄👍 That said cheers for uploading this clip, am a head on out to binge watch the entire show now. 😁😁😁
I like how Olivia is the most foreign looking in class but is sh*t in Japanese and Fujiwara has the face of a classic Japanese but is the most adept in English 😂😂
I don't know who is the voice actor actually are, but she definitely someone who is speaking English fluently. Especially in 1:37 The way she speaks "Research" is definitely someone who's already fluent. I think she must be mixed or something!
