As much as I love that Christopher Nolan films his movies on IMAX, it still bugs the shit out of me that he films the non-IMAX scenes in the wide 2.35:1 ratio, so you get the constant disappearing and reappearing of black bars when watching on TV. I don't understand why he doesn't just choose a ratio that's closer to the IMAX ratio so that doesn't happen.
@anthonychrisbradley

Worth noting that the reason the 1.85:1 ratio is so common is because that is the size of most projected 35mm film stock using standard lenses. And most digital camera sensors use the same size.

I used to really enjoy the MCU blu rays back when they came with the 3D disc because if they had IMAX scenes they would switch to that ratio but only on the 3D version which I thought was cool. Movies like Captain America Civil War, Doctor Strange, and Guardians 2 had the switching IMAX ratios on the 3D versions. That’s why I was upset that they didn’t have Infinity War in the IMAX ratio on the 4K or 3D versions of the blu ray. Good video keep up the good work.

I think La La Land was shot in a 2.55 : 1 aspect ratio because I believe that director Damien Chazelle wanted to get as closed as possible to CinemaScope's original maximum aspect ratio of 2.66:1 to replicate a look that was reminiscence of the 1950s and 1960s widescreen CinemaScope musicals that the film pays homage to.

One correction: "Super Panavision" uses an aspect ratio of 2.20:1 and is shot using non-anamorphic (spherical lenses) onto 70 mm film. An example is "2001: A Space Odyssey". "Ultra Panavision" has an aspect ratio of 2.76:1 and is also shot on 65 mm film but uses anamorphic lenses. To leave room for the additional soundtracks, the release prints use.70 mm film. "Ben-Hur' (1959) used this system, which MGM in the credits called "MGM Camera 65". Panavision, who had developed the the system for MGM, later purchased the rights from MGM and name for it was changed to "Ultra Panavision". It is seldom used.

thats an interesting distinction here. I dont think people know that Celluloid film stock has changed over years, and some aspect ratios had to adjust to include things like wider lenses and soundtracks.I wish this guy had included more visuals to illustrate.

Great info here. Aspect ratios have been confusing , but this helps as a refresher for me.One minor suggestion for future vids- Avoid over head lighting on yourself. It casts heavy shadows. maybe invest in a small LED ring light (key light) or similar to illuminate you from the front. Cheers.

Incredibly awesome breakdown with exact movies and screenshots to explain each aspect ratio. All these aspect ratios really come to light when you start using a projector screen while utilizing screen masking to offset those annoying black bars. The one thing I’ve noticed with IMAX movies, like the Dark Knight, is that I don’t like the jumping between the aspect ratios. Although it does give a momentary “awe” factor when the Dark Knight jumps from widescreen to IMAX, it’s just troublesome because you really can’t do any screen masking, so I just leave the screen all the open from ceiling to floor.

I know you know what you're talking but some of the terminology you ended up using could mislead people. For example, when you say there is a "minimal amount of stretching" to display a 1.85:1 picture on a 16:9 TV, that implies to me that the picture will be stretched or distorted because of the difference in aspect ratio. "Stretch" or "Stretching" are bad words for displaying any content. I would describe it more like . . . . . your TV is "zoomed out" on the movie to show the wide format - then the top and bottom are filled in with black bars . . . . something like that.

Love this video, and I love the topic of aspect ratios, the thing about Infinity War and Endgame is that parts where not shot in IMAX, the entire film was shot in IMAX so the entire movie is presented in 1.90:1 which is slightly wider than 1.85 but more taller than 2.00:1, so basically we're missing 26% of the entire image for both movies at all times, I get Marvel/Disney wants to keep the continuity between all the Marvel movies and have them be 2.39:1 BUT the first Avengers and Ant-Man were in 1.85:1, and to make things more odd Marvel will release their movies in 3D and they'll have the "open-matte" scenes that they play in IMAX and include it in their 3D Blu-ray's but not their 4K transfers, very odd indeed

What a lot of people don't understand is that the "black bars" don't mean you are seeing *less* of the picture, it means you are seeing the *ENTIRE* picture with none of it being cut off! Personally, I want to see the entire image, not blow it up and cut some of it off in order for it to fill the TV. I am so glad that the old policy of VHS/earlier DVS to do that is now not being done any more and by the time Blu Ray came around, they started showing the films in their PROPER aspect ratio.

Amazing video. I did not know any of this stuff since I stopped collecting movies 10 years ago. 4K movies being a thing is what got me back in the game. I see now that most of the movies I buy are at 2.39:1 or 2.4:1 ratio. I have a few at 1.85:1 (like The Avengers (the first one)) that fill up my most of my screen and some odd ones like Tenet that do some odd numbers like 2.2:1. I have also noticed that the nature series' that BBC releases are at 16:9. Fits perfectly on my tv. It annoys me though that they like releasing their discs in Dolby Vision and not giving HDR10 as an option but that's a topic for another day. Good looks on the info.

First year or so of CinemaScope was 2.55 to 1 at which point they took space off to put the soundtrack right on the film. There are a bunch of other aspect ratios from the 50's like for Todd-AO, Super Technirama 70, CinemaScope 55, VistaVision, etc. Super Pannivision-70 (aka MGM Canera65) is in that 2.75 to 1 because it has an anamorphic lense while normal Pannivision-70 if 2.20 to 1 because it doesn't. Most 70mm films don't use an anamorphic lense.

I'll explain why movies in cinemascope are at 2.39:1 at theatres and 2.40:1 at home. There is a difference between Cinema 2k and TV 2k. This is crucial. (I won't talk about 4k but this applies there too) Cinema has 2048x1080 TV has 1920x1080, this is the types of 2k most TVs and Monitors have. Movies have only 3 Aspect Ratios accepted by movie theatres Full 1.9:1 (2048x1080) Flat 1.85:1 (1998x1080) Scope 2.39:1 (2048x858) So, when a Movie is mastered from Cinema to Consumer grade it is shrunk a tiny to go from 2048 to 1920. The 1920x1080 format cannot display 2.39:1 because that is 1920x803.3 that is not an even number and has a third of a pixel too. Editing software's can't export this, so it is rounded down to 1920x800 which is 2.40:1. Why give to consumes a 6% smaller version for Blu-ray than there was in cinema? I guess just to make sure pixels align but I don't know how important that is. Hope this was helpful! Great video btw

I will forever maintain my stance that 1.66:1 is an underappreciated aspect ratio. Most 2D Disney films up until 2002 Brother Bear (where they played with aspect ratios quite a bit) I Only wish IMAX releases were cropped to 1.66 vs 1.79 as IMAX 70mm ratio is 1.44:1 a .22 loss over .35. Side note that 2.00:1 has been adopted by streaming services over 2.40:1

Great video. I would just add for clarification, the confusion in the way aspect ratios are desiginated is really only because the TV industry kind of abandoned the very simple way the movie industry describes aspect ratio. With movies it is very intuitive and easily understood. The movie nomenclature aspect ratios, because in the movie theatre, the movie screen is always the same height, the "1" always refers to the height of the screen. The other number is the width. There are NEVER any "bars" or "letterboxing" on the top and bottom of the image because the movie screen, unlike a TV set or computer monitor, is designed to fit the aspect ratio of the movie perfectly. In cinema, except for rare specialty films that include IMAX segments for example, there are basically ever only two aspect ratios -- 2.39:1 (anamorphic wide screen) or 1.37:1 (spherical cropped wide screen) with the latter sometimes if a film comes from Europe can be a modification of the 1.85:1 as 1.66:1ar. The older films before 1953, were ALL 1.37:1 (or what the video industry calls 4:3ar. And just to my point, it is much easier to see that 2.39:1 is much wider than 1.37:1, in fact it's easy to see that it is close to twice as wide, whereas your brain has go jump thru some math conversion hoops to visualize the difference between 16:9 and 4:3ar. Last point, the video people who write the text on the back of all those DVD and BluRay cases CONSTANTLY get the older pre-wide screen aspect ratios WRONG. The aspect ratio for SILENT film is 1.33:1. Then sound came along and they had to slightly change the size of the image on the film to accommodate space for the thin soundtrack that ran alongside the image. That change was standardized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science at 1.375:1 or simplified to 1.37:1. If it is not a silent movie, then the aspect ratio is 1.37:1 and NOT 1.33:1. Silent films = 1.33:1ar; Sound films up until 1953ish = 1.37:1 also a called the Academy ratio. Soooo many mistakes on video releases and even IMBD, where sound movies are shown to have aspect ratios of 1.33:1 which is wrong, wrong, wrong. And for the people who I have heard say, oh, it's so insignificent a difference, why worry about it? To me, it would be the same as saying a film was released on 34mm rather than on 35mm. Sure want's one milometer. Enough to make someone one who is writing liner notes for a BluRay release or for specs on IMDB look like an ass. :-) PS -- the difference between 2.39:1 and 2.4:1 is meaningless in terms of difference and only how film editors, lab tech, projectionists decided to call the new SMPTE change that was made to anamorphic prints. Originally the way movies shot anamophically were edited, with out going it to lots of technical detail, when splices were made in the negative, depending how closely the theatre's aperture plates were cut in the projector, a flash could be seen when at the splice. In order to make sure that very annoying artifact didn't show, the SMPTE changed the size of the aperture plate in the projector to cover sliver more of the space between the frames where the splice occurred. This required nothing to change other than possibly adjusting the masking slightly in the theatre. So now all these film techs who worked in the industry had a new aspect ratio, some called it the full spec, i.e., 2.39:1, while others said, hey, it we are going to change the spec, let's make it simpler -- and people just started rounding it off to 2.4:1 -- easier to say. Either way, it refers to any film shot today anamorphically -- the actual physical spec, i.e, in the printers and the projection aperture is 2.39:1, no matter what people call it. Just like the actual spec for sound movies before 1953ish is 1.375:1 and everyone just drops the extra 5 and calls it 1.37:1. Or the ones who are stuck in 1924 and still call it 1.33:1...hehe As to Jacob's point, better to use the word "crop" rather than "stretch" when describing spherical cropped wide screen. With any 1.85:1ar or sometimes 1.66:1ar, there is never any stretching per se....it is always just a matter of how much the 1.37:1 negative image is cropped either in the printing process (what they call "hard matted at 1.85:1ar on the print) or in the projector. "Stretching" or anamorphic restoration, only occurs with wide screen films that are shot with a 2x anamorphically squeezed negative. PPS -- the reason LA LA LAND is presented in 2.55:1ar is a kind of classy. The film takes place in the late 1950s, just at the time when CinemaScope caused the wide screen revolution. In a kind of homage to that era and that incredibly significant change in the way we watched movies ever since , director Damien Chazelle and Cinematographer Linus Sandgren decided to shoot the film in the same aspect ratio of the very first CInemaScope movies, which was 2.55:1. In actuality, they really shot it in normal 2.39:1ar on Kodak Vision film, but then just slightly cropped it to the wider 2.55:1ar, all done of course in video post production. The opening credits for the film show the image widening with the words CinemaScope filling the screen. Very classy. And another aside note, the ORIGINAL CinemaScope spec was for the film to be 2.66:1, almost the size of Cinerama. That required the sound track to be on a separate outboard film that played in sync with the image film. Because the full usable space on the 35mm print was 1.33:1ar (remember, without a soundtrack -- 1.33:1ar was the AR for silent film). Well, if you used that entire area, then squeezed it by a factor of 2, when you stretched it back out in projection, you'd get, voila! there's your 2.66:1ar. Problem was, running a movie that required a projectionist and a sound operator with an additional piece of equipment in your everyday neighborhood theatre was not something most theatres could or wanted to afford so prints were quickly reworked so the soundtracks could be added to the image release prints, requiring space for the tracks and a slight reduction of the image resulting in the more common CinemaScope release print spec of 2.55:1ar.

Consider that a digital 2k master at 1.85:1 has a resolution of 2048*1080.. You don't have a 2048 screen
@Rilumai
@Rilumai 4 года назад
If everything was 1.85:1, that would not be a perfect world. That would restrict the directors creative choice behind an aspect ratio and just make everything look the same, really. What if a director wanted to shoot vast landscapes? It would not look nearly as impressive in 1.85:1 as it would in 2.76:1.

Something of a trivia this and apologies if someone may have already said this in the comment section. There is another anomaly in history of aspect ratios which is a 4.00:1 ratio! Abel Gance’s 1927 silent epic film Napoleon. In the last third of the 5.5 hour movie (yes it’s that long but a truly remarkable film) it has what is called the Triptych sequence. Essentially Abel Gance (the director) was worried that the film's finale would not have the proper impact by being confined to a smaller screen (1.33:1 at the time). Gance thought of expanding the frame by shooting the sequence using three cameras next to each other. And for that one sequence you get this whooping 4.00:1 ratio! Thankfully it was very delicately restored in only the BFI version of the film (exclusive to the U.K) and not in the Coppola’s version. Check the film out if you like the classic epics such as Ben-Hur or Ten Commandments. Carl Davis’ music is just incredible in Napoleon.

I knew all of this stuff anyway but still enjoyed the video thought you explained everything very well, although I must say comparing the Avengers Infinity War/Endgame IMAX situation to the dark knight Blu Ray is slightly wrong to me as I get why Disney have left the imax off all their pre infinity war blu rays it is common to do when it’s just a few imax scenes as many people do not like the flickering aspect ratio. I don’t agree with this but I get it, whereas Infinty war and Endgame were entirely shot and release at 1.88:1 aspect ratio but this was exclusive to imax screens which is apparently why it can’t be on the blu Ray because this exclusivity deal is still ongoing hopefully we see this version released at some point in the future though

I heard they're doing this to force ppl to go to the theatres 🤦 for the "true experience" is it worth buying if it's not 16:9 1.78 or 1.85 1? Doesn't sound like it 🙄 this made me rethink collecting certain titles 🙅 keep it 1.78 - 1.85 stop all that extra ish

Yeah but the real question is not what do they mean but why do they do it? Why not stick to the standard so we all get full screen movies? Is it cool and edgy to give us different sized black bars? Hey why not add odd resolutions to match 1440p,1800p, 5k and why not throw in limited colors that should really help them with their decision.

As RB Zee said, movies are not shot with TV screens in mind. To add to this, shooting in different aspect ratios can change how the movie feels. Shooting in a wide ratio makes a film feel open and vast, while shooting in a tight ratio makes a film feel cramped and claustrophobic. There's also movies like The Grand Budapest Hotel which uses three different aspect ratios to distinguish between each of the three time periods that the film takes place in. Aspect ratios can be used as a tool when making a film just as resolution can (28 Days Later) as well as limited colors (Schindler's List).

I may be in the minority, but I hate the IMAX scenes on 4K discs. I don't like the changing aspect ratios. My eyes get comfortable watching an aspect ratio. It is uncomfortable when it changes. My vote is to stick with one aspect ratio and keep it that way, whatever it is, on discs.

I don’t get At all this les is more idea. I have a 16/9 screen and its as big as lt can be that space so any stupid super widesceen or 21:9 ect line format is not going to give bigger picture than 16/9. I just don’t get what is the idea behind those formats, to be more is more so thereby the bigger the image the more the imersion. Hollywood could stuff every others aspect Ratio not 16/9 up their ass. I paid for the whole screen i shurely would like to Enjoy it

Movies weren't made for your TV. They were made for the theater which gives the directors the freedom to choose whatever aspect ratio they want to use to make their movie. It's a creative choice. Want to shoot real tight to cause tension and fear? Shoot in 4:3. Want to show off vast landscapes and awe people? Shoot Ultra Panavision in 2.76:1 . Then there's movies like The Grand Budapest Hotel which used three aspect ratios to distinguish between each time frame. They used 1.37:1 for the scenes in 1932, 2.40:1 for the scenes in 1968 and 1.85:1 for the scenes in 1985. There's a reason why directors shoot in the aspect ratio they do. Don't hate it just because TV's found a middle ground.
