This episode was first broadcast on ITV on the 9th June, 1986. Like Bob Monkhouse who went before him, there is no one close to the kind of loss that light entertainment suffered when we said goodbye to good ole Brucie! The word "Institution" gets thrown around a lot, but never has it been defined more than it was defined by Bruce Forsyth. Also on this show were the delightful Roy Kinnear and the absolute gorgeous Jenny Agutter

Bruce had a gift for creating humour out of thin air, he just had to turn up & the atmosphere changes, few people could make cushions being attached to a sofa a cause for merriment. Frankie Howerd had a similar gift. As a fan of his tv shows my parents bought me a ticket for my birthday to see Bruce's one man show at the Blackpool Grand Theatre in 1988, the act had remained unchanged since the 1970's ( a live recording of it is on his album 'Both Sides Of Bruce' ) & he was mesmerising. I haven't seen anything before or since that came close to his command of the live audience. I saw the show the following year & apart from the odd current reference ( he mentioned Ken Dodd's tax evasion ) it was identical to the previous year.

Have you seen Frankie Howerd's appearance on the Generation Game in the Cinderella sketch? Absolutely at his best!

Aspel & Company - Bruce Forsyth Interview (1986). 23.8.24. We all liked brucie and Kinnear...kinnear had a deadpan approach which I liked. American werewolf is a cool film. I mean That's TV channel has 3 channels with eff all yo show on them. Perhaps siting old chat shows would be a Good idea...i mean 70's/80's was the era of chat...pebnle mill, we ogsn.....parkjnson, des O'Conner....aspel.....anyhow.....

A died in the wool showman: He was replaced by Larry Grayson, who made a far greater success of the Gen Game than Forsyth ever did. Larry engaged with the contestants and put them at ease. Forsyth would (despite his false claims) put the contestants 'on edge' and would try to overawe them intentionally. Forsyth would mercilessly send up the Gen Game contestants to make himself appear clever. Larry was a very funny man, though would only send up himself, and always aimed to put the contestants at ease. The live recording of any Saturday night TV show is something that Bruce Forsyth and Larry Grayson had done many times before. but the environment of TV studio was totally foreign to the contestants who appeared on the show. They deserved NOT to be humiliated.

When they talked about Bruce's US game show & the large prizes won there, in 1986, game shows on ITV were limited to how much they could give away per episode. The cap set by the Independent Broadcasting Authority in 1986 was a measly £1,750 per show. Compared to US game shows at the time, this was a pittance. ITV could afford more, but the IBA refused to allow it until that rule was abolished in 1993.

@@majordolbyscat Thank you. Yes, the restrictions back then were really controlling. In fact up until 1972 the government controlled the amount of television hours allowed per day on both BBC and ITV. An era which was very controlling,

Watching Michael Aspel reminds me of a talk show host from Ireland who I feel had a similar cold style of interviewing, a man called Pat Kenny, who hosted Kenny Live 1988 to 1999 and then took over Ireland's big Late Late Show for 1999 to 2009. I just remembered Pat Kenny when I saw Michael's interviewing style

13:48 - Bruce mentioned his US game show which was called Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak and made for ABC. 65 shows produced and a total failure, as the American audiences really didn't warm to Bruce. His style was so un American. It was beaten daily by The Price Is Right and Wheel of Fortune. Aired in the morning game show slot of 11am East Coast.
