That's what I thought. It's so weird that he's working on a super modern piece of equipment, yet has to resort to painstakingly precise and time-consuming manual labor that wouldn't have been out of place in the Middle Ages or during the Industrial Revolution.

It's a sever board in mini-itx format, these are usually used for network or storage "edge" appliances with low power requirements, they by default display to vga and you may need to change that in bios or even using jumper as the display is controlled by BMC (Aspeed) chip it also has support for IPMI remote management with dedicated lan. also these may have very specific requirements to memory used, it's possible that they may accept only registered ecc DIMMs (memory usually used for server but not desktop/laptop pc).
@UrokLizard

Jeez thats a BIG upgrade. You upgraded that little board from 4 cores/8 threads to 16 cores/32 threads. No wonder they wanted the upgrade. BTW this chip was made in 2016. Big chip in a small package.

@ahayesm
@ahayesm День назад
@@bearde_mut9731 It isn't out of anything, ASRock Rack motherboards can be bought just like any regular motherboard you'd buy for a desktop including this one. (it's $700 though, there are way better options for little ITX boards with built in CPUs provided support for RDIMMS isn't a requirement)

@@guiorgy By today's standards that's a power sipper. It's 10w lower than a basic 6 core Ryzen. 65w is nothing. And besides, 65W is it's max and it will only reach that if the CPU is pegged at 100% utilisation which it won't be.

So was this just to show off that you can re-ball without a stencil? You have done a lot of impressive things in your videos but this is what has impressed me the most.
@cameramaker

The cpu has components on the bottom side, so you can not align a regular stencil. It would need to be stamped in the center.
@Adiko
@Adiko 14 часов назад
@@cameramaker wdym regular stencil? there are stencils made for exact generations of cpu/gpu, there certainly is one for this cpu as well, just that it wasn't time/cost-effective for this guy to buy it for single cpu, he probably won't ever do again
@bearde_mut9731
@bearde_mut9731 12 часов назад
@@Adiko I highly doubt that, these were ubiquitous enterprise chips. If something went wrong with them they got chucked and replaced with one that was pre-balled from factory or the whole unit got replaced. Data centers and compute farms aren't going to go to this trouble and these wouldn't be common enough in general for anyone to make a stencil of.

The second card with the interface at the bottom is a management card for hp servers. It acts as a low powered computer to monitor the server even when the server is turned off or broken. The interface is extremely proprietary. As for the 1st board that looks like mini-itx, I would suspect an embedded motherboard for things like running robots in a factory.

These are server motherboards. The ASRock one is ITX form factor. The other is some proprietary high density server form factor. So the owner probably wants the extra performance, and found the proprietary server board laying around. These Xeon D CPU are great for NAS or router use. They consume less power than Xeon E5 from the same age. And they support registered DDR4 ECC RAM. The ASRock Rack board and another Supermicro board are the only boards that support registered RAM at the size of ITX. If you want a miniature server and ECC is a must, Xeon D is great, but they are expensive compared to the performance, so I wouldn't recommend it if a bigger size is acceptable.

0:45 The proprietary board looks like a blade-like card for some high density cluster server solution (most probably HP HA or something like that). These are ACPI enumerable and manageable, so the host OS threats them as hot pluggable CPU and memory (yes, those ACPI functions aren't meant VM-only). Them are an easy way to add CPU and memory nodes in datacenters without the need of power off the whole node host.

On spreader decoupling, common on most processors now, and needed as the lead inductance of the spreader otherwise means the power rails on die are too poorly regulated. Likely also has a lot more under the lid as well, simply because they need as much as possible. There is a reason half of the balls on the processor are dedicated to power and ground use only. Will bet the processor does not work because of the infamous SMbus clock fault Intel had with those chips, they all eventually would fail.
