What a different view than all the rest of Journos from IGN and Gamespot that gave the game 6/10 scores and played only 15 hours... Thanks for your review, I believe I will enjoy this DLC because I loved Valhalla.
I am kinda sad this isn't part of the Season Pass. I got Valhalla Ultimate Edition (was like 119$ i think) when it came out, which was the game plus the season pass content, and I was super upset when they announced they were making MORE content for Valhalla, but that it wasn't going to be a part of the Season pass. Things like that always come off shitty to me, but it really shouldn't because it is additional content not originally mentioned as part of the Season Pass. HOWEVER, Since Valhalla went down to 20$ base game, 35$ for ultimate edition within 2 months of releasing, I'll wait to play this probably during the summer when we have that slump of no games releasing. I expect to be able to grab it for 10-15$ easy.
Having enjoyed valhalla ( I understand why people find it boring or bland ) I am actually looking foward to this having a love for the Norse timeline and it’s myths
I beat the dlc the game is fun I liked it a lot but the ending was so bad it's like they gave up it's 100% not 35 hours it's more like 10 to 12 hours that's if you can get through the bugs
Glad it turned out to be good; I'm interested in this. I do like Valhalla (even though I'm not big on vikings), but 60 hours in and I still have so much to do in addition to the other two expansions. Probably going to wait a bit.
It's still mindblowing to me that they make multiple way too huge games for years and as if that isn't too much already they make multiple expansion-DLC's for every one of these. How much mediocre quality can one chug down? It's crazy tbh

I thought it was just me, thankfully I am not one, I've done about 25hrs of Horizon FW and just couldn't get into it like the first game HZD, Elden Ring has changed my gaming perspective and I've gone back now and finished DS 1-3, Bloodbourne and Demon Souls, I finally get it, I've been missing a challenge and I am so sick of far left preachy politics in games, ER is the first true masterpiece I've played since Witcher 3.
I have a hard time describing to people just how good the Fate of Atlantis dlc for Odyssey is, I played it over two years ago and I still think about how well crafted that dlc was...hopefully Ragnarok will help prop up Valhalla, in my opinion Valhalla was a major step back from Odyssey and Origins
Man, I couldn't agree more. Personally, I think Odyssey is the peak of Assassin's Creed as far as the "new" (barely) RPG-ish format goes, and the Fate of Atlantis DLC was so damn good.

This is soooo misleading. The game IS NOT A STANDALONE. It is a DLC and u are required to have the original Assassins Creed Valhalla in order to be able to play it. -.-
It's nice to see a good review that highlights problems while also praising other aspects of the dlc. As apposed to some of the other "reviews" (IGN) out there that just moan about everything and don't get what the dlc is
I really hope for the next game they optimize the engine for newer tech. Valhalla always seemed to run worse and have more tech issues then Origins/Odyssey did. Would have really benefited from either FSR or DLSS

Origins & Odyssey have really trash CPU optimzations (thanks to 3 layer DRMs on PC) Valhalla use Dx12, which is by far much better than Dx11 compared to Origins & Odyssey Am getting stable 90 fps at 1440 ultra on Valhlla with stable framepace (frametime) While am getting around 50-80fps at 1440p Ultra at Origins & Odyssey (spikes & stuttered) RX 6800 , ryzen 5600x , 32DDR4 at 3400MHz (14ms), installed all of them in SSD
I enjoyed valhalla was interesting experiencing vikings and invading england. But I do hope whatever they do in the next game we get a very stealth focused adventure. A Basim standalone would be amazing.
Anyone can say what they want about this game but it's been hands down my favorite AC game as a whole. I love Norse mythology and the sheer amount of content they've added to this game trumps every AC game before it.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla is not a bad game. Neither was Odyssey. They are great games, and the RPG mechanics really work well, imo. The problem is fatigue. It's just too big, and has too many roadblocks to completion. The world is beautiful, the story is really good, and the game mechanics work really well... but I never seem to be able to play an Assassin's Creed game all the way through. Perhaps it's my fault for wanting to 100% everything, but ten-twenty hours in I just wake up one morning wanting to play something else. Or something else will happen that makes me not play the game for a couple of weeks, and the feeling of going back to that game just feels like a chore, and not an anticipation. I LOVE this game on paper. I've had some seriously awesome moments in this world, and playing the dice games and stuff gives me a nice warm vibe, but _something_ just feels like "MEH!" I can't put my finger on it.
Playing one game after a different game, unless it's the first game you've ever played in your life that is exactly what happens every time smooth brain!
They actually nerfed the resolution of the ps5 version in the second patch they put out. Still pisses me off to this day. Initially ps5 was higher res than xb1x, now they're both basically 1400p at 60 fps. They also never fixed the awful compressed sound of both console versions. I'm pissed at Ubi for their performance issues in many games. Far Cry 6 has awful screen tearing on ps5. That game runs better on Series X. What pisses me off is when a company never bothers to fix major issues. I can understand some around launch.
I'm gonna do what I always do with AC games in the last decade. Wait till I have no other games to play, then buy the whole AC Valhalla kaboodle for 20 EUR on discount in a year or two.
After 80 hours in Elden Ring, seeing the giant quest marker above the NPC as well as on the compass at the top of the map really puts me off this. I dropped off Valhalla after 40 or 50 hours because it felt like a never-ending series of checklists but I always assumed that I'd get back to it at some point. Now I'm not sure I'd be able to stomach it.
@@SM-nc1nb yeah the HUD settings are definitely pretty good but they don't apply to the map so I still feel like I'm moving between a task list and I think that's what burned me out.
You can turn off map markers and helpers, you can customize enemy difficulty well beyond almost every other game including things like parry windows. Valhalla > Running Rings around Elden horse. Nevermind the fact that Elden Ring has map markers for things like caves and camps - people somehow just decide to be obnoxious and act like those dont exist.
@ebichuman84 people sure do act like they never played a game before in their life. Elden ring wasn't even the first game to have no hud or should I say a less detailed one and disabling the hud on AC only leaves the compass which is less than what the default hud is on elden ring
Yeah with you on Valhalla I liked Valhalla... It was fun, I just thought it was a bit bloated and didn't like it quite as much as I would of wanted. So since I agree with you on Valhalla I'm going to go ahead and give this one a chance and buy it!
Maybe partially because many who have Elden Ring probably have not finished it yet and/or continuing to play it multiple times and will probably wait for a sale before buying the DLC for this.
I have just finished the Ragnarök DLC on Stadia, and I had no dips in FPS or any of the issues you've mentioned, even my 126 hours of gameplay (base game) was smooth like butter.
Just started a playthrough of Ghosts of Tsushima, and I am curious how the combat compares between the two games. I played Odysee and I felt the combat was far more floaty and imprecise compared to Ghosts. If the combat is a noticeable improvement from Odyssey, I might pick it up after Ghosts. After 20 hours of Ghosts, I have to say, it has the best combination of combat and open world controls of any in the genre. The combat is to the level, I can tolerate the repetitive base clearing loop that all of these open world games have devolved to.
Since Origins the models get progressively worse. The writing isn't good to beginn with, but together with the goofy characters, it's really hard for me to take the game seriously.
I'm looking forward to a discounted Valhalla complete edition bundle with DoR included. My biggest problem is that I'm nowhere close to even midgame (or further including dlc) in Odyssey. By the time I get to this God of War Ragnarok might be out.😆
Literally looks like that meme Elden Ring image, can't unsee all the ruinous UX in these Ubisoft games now. I can see why their devs are crying when this is releasing next to it right now.
Just started Assassins Creed Valhalla again because I just finished Viking's Valhalla on Netflix and it was awesome, got me going again. I wasn't too interested in Ragnarok until your review but now I think I am going to get it. I actually like Valhalla, I literally just finished the Prologue and thought that was the beginning. Holy Cow. Love the visuals. But I am also playing 3 other games so it takes me forever. Excellent review as always. It's a buy, but since I am broke I will wait for a sale.

I really think this looks great, but I’m so far behind on Assassin’s Creed lore I have no idea what’s going on anymore. Last game I beat was Black Flag. Would like to continue with the series but I hardly have the time to embrace the commitment it seems to require. Still, I know the series has it’s haters, but to me this looks pretty top notch. From an outsider’s perspective, it’s pretty nuts how much this series seems to have evolved.
I've played all the main AC games and was a big fan of Ubisoft up until Valhalla, that should tell you all you really need to know. While playing the most recent games, I always found myself asking "is this all the game has to offer? Is there really nothing more?" I could go into more detail but neither of us really have the time for that lol. I would suggest getting Horizon Forbidden West instead of Ubisoft games in 2022 though. Currently 30 hours in and in a lot of ways, reminds me of the Witcher 3
The modern day stuff has taken a nosedive with every game since then. Not to mention certain things are only explained in extra material like books or comics. So just read a wiki to catch up on things. That being said, if you're expecting something akin to classic Assassin's Creed then I don't recommend Valhalla or Odyssey (or Origins but that one I kinda enjoyed as its own thing). Both start out strong but then kinda deflate and you'l hit a wall of repetitive tasks that for me just drained all enjoyment out of them. Had to force myself to slug through Odyssey and Valhalla I gave up on and just watched the ending on yt. I do recommend giving Unity a go. Despite its very flawed launch and meh writing it's fun to play. Really liked the parkour in that one and the assassination missions are quite fun.
People should stop buying Ubisoft games they are 99/100 times not finished or buggy or predatory. The current Ubisoft isn’t interested in the gamers anymore. They’re just interested in how much money people will spent in their stores instead of how much joy people get from the base game.
Should have been free with Season Pass. Used to be you get every DLCs for free with Season Pass. This will wait until a very steep price drop. Too many great games and RPGs coming out this year.
I just hope I can load my Valhalla save without having to install Valhalla again. I'll have to delete a game to fit them both on my PS5. I'm definitely going to get it though, since I've yet to play an AC game I didn't like. (Although AC3 came close.)
The technical issues I experienced in Valhalla will keep me from getting this DLC until it's 70% off or more. I have 200 hours+ in this game and its DLC's and played it on higher end PC's. Most of the problems started after a few updates. Some updates just crashed all the time and nothing I did on my end could fix it, sometimes the game crashed more on the weekends than in the week (this made me suspect their servers being a part of the issue). I had so many bugs and glitches in this game that it makes Bethesda games look polished to perfection, I've fallen through the map, been stuck in a falling animation, been stuck in the ground and stairs, been shot so high up in the air that I can see the whole of the map, teleported 5-10m while running, had my characters hair clipping through the hood, had saves corrupted, npc's not being visible (but I can hear them), npc's refusing to find me at chests on river raids, every time I loaded a save Eivor was drunk, every time loading a save it was raining and much, much more.
This was a mind blowing expansion. Better then Valhalla? No, that’s a reach. Better than most if not all DLCs I’ve ever played, and arguably better than some full AC games? Yes. Without question.
This is what I could not put into words. Expected Odyssey in Norse mythology and got, something weaker and less impact and no SPARTA KICK, lmao. I am looking forward to this dlc but don't expect to enjoy the combat very much
Yep Ubisoft combat is jank af, play Elden ring the combat is amazing, Valhalla is one of those games to fill time and scratch your norse/fantasy itch until something else comes along

If there's any type of game Elden Ring has ruined for me forever, it's these Ubisoft open worlds, and I say that as someone who has been a fan of Assassin's Creed since the very beginning.
Ubisoft really should have just made a fantasy game set in norse mythology. I honestly think it would have been a better game if it wasn't an AC game. I love Assassin's Creed, but I hope they just stop making them and just start making fantasy action rpg's. It seems to be what the people making the game wants to do, but the money people insist they slap the AC on it, wich holds back the game

I stayed away because of the reviews but after playing at the last couple of days I love assassin's creed Valhalla I put like 20 hours in in a week and I'm excited to get to the point where I can play Ragnarok
I personally love it but they need to drop the assassins creed name to it and commit to a true fantasy game whose loot game isn't inspired by games like destiny or grindy

This expansion is great! Only problem I had was when I started the expansion again from the beginning but with a new save file using the lvl 340 power boost. I Couldn't complete the tutorial as 2 NPCs got stuck on a wall after second tutorial boss on the way to the shelter and couldn't make it to there destination. This was on PS4 by the way👍
ACG, honestly I give up on the dev team behind Valhalla, they dont have the knowledge how to make FUN PLAYER-POWER perks. Most of the perks are just boring, weak or cumbersome. We had fun/player-power perks in AC: Oddessey. But Valhalla really ruins it with there meh perks and dont get me started on the garbage rune system. It has been years and still there is no FUN/EASY way to get GOOD runes.
100%... Ac Valhalla is a step-down from the fun perks and stats we had in Odyssey, because in Odyssey. You become stronger with the gear your wear while in Valhalla the perks are so boring and weak it really does not matter.
This is looking great, I did like valhalla but I didn't like its button mashing combat and stupid AI I hope they fixed that here and made the game more challenging. Great review as always ACG.
Loved Valhalla, sank 250 hrs into it but found the Asgard sections to be the least enjoyable so will probably wait for a price drop and pick it up later, with the bonus of any bugs being fixed
@@danteyoda I get that, but having it titled under the AC franchise means that it supposed to follow the structure of the earlier games of the franchise. If MacDonalds suddenly fried chicken instead of making fries and burgers, people would be pissed. It's the same with AC. It's instead doing something other games are doing, and erased everything previous games in the franchise stood for.
Disgraceful this isn't part of their season pass. People pay enough without needing to spend even more. Season passes were always an access to all future dlc, but these yearly season passes just show the greed out there from some publishers.
To be fair ACV came out in 2020. Historically DLC came out a few months after launch, so it's not apples to apples. But it really doesn't bode well for the AC live service thing which will presumably be free content for years.
Leave it to Ubisoft to forge brave new territory in the disgusting monetization of games. So now with Valhalla we have a "Season Pass" which does NOT include all the DLC. Despite the fact that in Odyssey the "Season Pass" did include all DLC. Name another single-player game with a "Season Pass" that didn't include all major DLC content for said game. Ragnarok was clearly marketed as an expansion for the base game, which I believe you need to play this DLC. Ubisoft also put their "Season Pass" and various bundles for Valhalla on sale in the PSN store a few weeks ago just prior to Ragnarok's release, knowing that many customers would assume it included Ragnarok without reading the fine print. 100% deceptive marketing and scumbag tactics.
AC Valhalla is so massive that once I didnt plkay for a couple weeks I couldnt get back into it. I was lost in the story and the land. IT was overwhelming lol. I think ill enjoy this much better
@GiRayne yeah Odyssey is great, but there's way too many military/bandit camps. the Atlantis DLC is really worth getting through though, as is the First Blade - which kind of finishes the main story. Vahalla I found the world to be dull and empty. I put 200 hours into the main game and Ireland/Paris DLCs and I've just had enough. it's the AC game I like the least after Rogue and III
@GiRayne What's the problem with huge games? I am the person who gets bored with games the fastest. I would love if every game is 5 - 7 hours at max. For example people said that vanguard campaign is too short but I actually hoped it would be a bit shorter. But I seriously don't get what's wrong with games like odyssey and valhalla being that huge. I will stop playing it after 20 or 30 hours maximum. But I will come back to it after 6 months or a year. The game will feel brand new and I will still have so much to do. Ubisoft games are so huge that I don't even mind paying whatever they ask for because I know that I will play these games for years to come.

I don't know man...I'm playing Elden, Gran Turismo 7, and Forbidden West. I don't know how much more time I have for another open world game right now.
I really enjoyed Valhalla it felt like an actual Assassin's Creed game and brought back a lot of elements that made Assassin's Creed Assassin's Creed. Like actually having the Assassin's being a major part of the story and even getting to see the origins of the templars. I also enjoyed that they brought back blending with crowds (even though it felt half baked). Also having the ability to one shot assassinate people actually allowing stealth. I do acknowledge the game was way too long and probably could have been cut down 20ish hours I still think it's a solid Assassin's Creed game. The fact that this DLC is getting such a positive reception I'm definitely willing to go back to the game to give it a try.
Vikings: Valhalla season 1 and The Last Kingdom season 5 just came out which gives me renewed energy to play Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla again! And I need something chill after the sweatfest called Elden Ring!
After playing God of War on PC, which was ridiculously good, I don’t know….this just doesn’t interest me. I love all things Viking and Norse so I feel I’m missing out but GoW was just so seamless and groundbreaking that I feel I’ll lose interest fast. Wondering if anyone has played both games by chance.
I'll wait till this is cheap cheap to buy. The art design looks like it carrying everything. Sound still sounds terrible and layered. Gameplay still looks the same just skin different, npc still seem doopey in their mannerism and dialogue. The cape still shrivels up and doesn't flow or obey physics which is still disappointing.
I can always count on you to deliver a great game review. Unfortunately, Dawn of Ragnarok isn't for me. I was once a huge fan of Ubisoft up until I played Valhalla, now I can't bring myself to ever buy anymore products from them. Yes Products, not games, because that's exactly what they are. Right now I'm having a lot more fun on Horizon Forbidden West and as soon as the framerate issue in Elden Ring on PC gets fixed, I'll be having more fun on that as well.
@@bargaintuesday812 “similarly designed open world” doesn’t mean the same gameplay loop. Horizon is way more varied and fun than Valhalla. I wish horizon would innovate a little more in their map design, it has definitely gotten stale. Also maybe cut it out with the copy pasted bandit camps. But the core gameplay combat loop of fighting robot hippopotamuses, Tyrannosaurus rex, and other crazy megafauna with slingshots and javelins is a lot of fun. Every fight is like a unique mini boss. Disabling specific attacks and collecting specific resources by targeting individual components in a shower of sparks is really satisfying. What other open world game plays like that? Monster Hunter is the closest I can think of but even that isn’t that similar.
@@johnwrath3612 It's fine at first but it gets super monotonous very quickly. Same with the story. Starts out with an interesting premise and gets more and more boring as the game continues. The only reason it gets so much praise is because of the Sony cult. If Ubisoft made it and it was the exact same game, the same peoe who praised it would be saying it sucks. It's pretty though at least.
I was wondering the same thing. Do we have to pile rocks, line up pictures and crap like that in 5 different areas. The rinse and repeat junk they keep adding to their games. He doesnt cover this. He only said it’s not as bloated, what ever he means by that.
The review sounds great but it's hard to get excited for AC for me at this point. I found Valhalla alright as a filler between games I actually love but at the moment there is so much new high quality games I am playing I don't think I want to go back. Maybe when there is a dry spell I pick it up.
After being knee deep in elden ring since release this looks so much more mid than it did to me on release, I just can’t get behind Ubisoft. The art team is obviously working overtime as always.
The worst part is you can’t even take these abilities to the main game... like really bro turning into a eagle in England would make it way less tedious
