In this video, we go through some of the protestant critiques of the passing of the Mother of God into the heavens. Although the official title of this feast is "The Dormition of the Mother of God", in this video I will focus on the passing/transition/translation/assumption of the Theotokos. We will also go through how St Andrew of Crete and Fr Dumitru Stăniloae understand the lack of attestation to this event in earlier sources.

John, I really appreciate your efforts. Recently I listened to Protestant apologist Dr. Ortland and provided a simple comment to the effect that Protestants overthink this topic and need more imagination. We should be able to believe that God took special care His vessel- much more care than any mortal. That is enough to accept that she is currently in God’s presence. I like the way the Church handles this as a mystery vs. a dogma which you explained so well. I studied existential philosophy as an atheist; but I was oddly attracted to the ideas of Kierkegaard. Twelve years ago I came to Christ- but strictly on proofs of the resurrection. I attended Protestant churches until last October when I drove two hours to the nearest Orthodox Church which is St. Mary’s in Iron Mountain Michigan. I am still attending regularly and will be a Catechumen this fall with my husband. We are so happy to have found this very reasonable and joyful faith. Kierkegaard was right- and so was my dear G.K. Chesterton. 😊

Thank you for your reflection and I am happy to hear about your and your husband's decision, as are the angels (Luke 15:10). I am just a servant, if anything is of worth, glory to God

I should also add, and you will learn this in catechism, that we don't separate teaching and piety, dogma and life, but these things go together. As Vladimir Lossky says, "It is impossible to divorce that which is pure teaching from that which belongs to piety in an exposition on the Mother of God". This is to say, although we can speak of the essentials, that does not mean that everything else is disconnected from that or up for sale. Life and dogma create an inseparable whole.
