Astatic D104 vs Turner Plus 3 Power Microphones

Just a comparison between these two ubiquitous microphones. The Turner has a compression circuit to subdue overdrive that seems to work better than the circuit in the Astatic. I think they both technically have compression built into them, but I find the Turner to do it more effectively. I use the D104 more often because I think it comes over the air more loudly with my voice. Both of these examples are working well, and I am going to use both of them regularly. I also own copies of both of these mics that I redid all of the circuitry in, in order to 'upgrade' them, but honestly, leaving them alone is where it's at. Just invest your money into a new, modern Heil or something if you want better sounding audio. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for watching!

The Turner Plus 3 is by far the best communications mic ever built. Bar none!.

30 "Enterprises" Joseph Good morning, my friend. For me, Turner Plus Three is fantastic for my Transiver Súper Star 360 FM. Thanks for the video, it has helped me very much!

That Turner plus three b you have is a great mic. It will produce smoother audio on Ssb. Depending on the rig you use a mic on, each rig has different audio characteristics. The astatic d104 of course is a loud sharp mic. Shines with many rigs. It does fall short on Ssb, that's why they produced the 10da dymanic head for Ssb use. Of course Turner has the more sophisticated preamp with the compression circuit for the plus three. The plus two is smoother, but raw power with the ceramic element. It performs good on Am and Ssb. Cb operators used to crank up their d104 mics at arms length and get all the room noise and shout into them. A 70s thing I guess. The only thing I can say is Turner wanted to improve audio quality by making the plus three. Its the closest way to get more of a broadcast quality audio sound with rolling the highs a bit. This curve response is different of course with different rigs. The monitor scope was a nice touch you used to prove this point. I always use a monitor rig with no antenna and head phones to listen. You can hear the plus three's compression and audio level performance. Its not perfect, but it's like rack gear and a power mic all in one. With the eq set flat. 73

Compression/ amplified vs. amplified. The Turner compression board runs circles around the 104. Hamsters have been using compressors or processors for eons.

I own 46 Astatic D-104 desk microphones in my collection and Zero Turner microphones.I have never been a fan of the Turner desk microphone design.I have a very deep voice not a girly voice.👍🎙

Good sound advise , Both Mic's sound and work well with just about any Transmitter . The Turner Mic's were favored for Sideband . As for the D104 , You could hear a Fly flying in a room . They were that sensitive . I always liked both Mic's and have a few of them still .

Nice Video, and I get what you say concerning different voices and how each Mic differs. I run a Turner Plus 3B on a Lafayette SSB-140 and A D-104 Silver Eagle (Plus) on my Cobra 2000 GTL. I think different radios make a difference also. 73's from 311, Northern Indiana.

Yes, indeed. Each radio has a bit of its own 'EQ' built in in terms of filtering out and boosting certain frequencies. There's also the impedance matching differences between something like an old tube rig and a 1970s transistorized radio at play and finding that right match makes a big difference to get great audio out of the radio.

My Father (SK) used a non-amplified D-104 for decades, as a matter of fact, that was the only mic he owned. As for myself, I have the D-104 (powered) and just recieved today in the mail, a New to Me, Turner +2 . Correct me if I'am wrong, the Turner +2 has a Carbon mic element? But My D-104 still has the factory Crystal mic element. Any old school microphone regardless who made them are awesome, built to out live us all!!!. My Brother is a musician and he has these microphones that has a small vacuum tube (a peanut tube) inside of the mic housing, I cant recall the name of those mics, but they sound friggen awesome, my Bro is heavily into vacuum tube amps and old HiFi sterio equipment. Great video and demo, thanks for sharing that with us!. UDX 4570 Palm Springs Wavin!!!👋🤠🎙

I'm not certain on the Turner +2 element. My shinier D104 in the splash picture had a dead element in it. I replaced it with basically a cheap, new element but left the circuit in place, but with new capacitors, resistors, and transistors. It works fine, but sounds pretty much the same as my old original one that I use all the time (the one from this video.). Mr Carlson's Lab has a video about a tube microphone he uses for his videos (cost like 1100 bucks) and they sound good of course! You're just hearing me through my iphone haha. I haven't gotten that into video quality yet. I do know that the non-amplified D104 mate well with a lot of the older tube radios in a way that you can't get modern mics to work with them. Impedence matching is important with equipment and most CB people have no idea what that even means.

Turner plus two is a ceramic element. Has lots of gain. Good mic for Am. Really shines on Ssb.

I've used Turner mic for years and always get good report back. Even my signal is only 2 or 3, they always say it's very loud and clear even if it's thousands mile away. As for the Astatic, they are also great mics only the audio is in the treblish side.

The only thing I dislike about the Turner is the crap paint they used on it. I have to touch it up occasionally with black fingernail polish. Setting the Turner at 10 O'clock and the Dynamike on the radio at 12 O'clock is the sweet spot that allows you to sit in front of the mic normally and get superb audio response. As far as the D-104 goes, they always sound tinny no matter where you set it, so I yank that tired old Crystal Cartridge out and replace it with one from a cheap Superstar hand mic. You won't believe the difference!
