True craftsmen! Note those purpose built metal hammerform jigs- very expensive tooling. The hammer assortment is impressive, looks as if some hammers were made for a certain panel. Thanks for posting.
clamping and chasing the alloy, , , ,the rest of us coachbuilders/metalshapers have to use sweeps and hand made templates, still keeping the original seams. . .
This film is an important part of brittish industrial history. Very interesting, no wonder theybwent arse up trying to compete with that sort of production. Such good looking cars though.
They certainly don't make cars like that anymore, that's for sure. Probably not even at Aston Martin these days. What a lovely little look back in time. Those craftsman are artists, pure artists.
what are you talking about? I've owned enough cars and had several run-ins where body panel replacement was necessary.I replaced the roof panel on my Peugeot, the brazing was a bitch to duplicate what the Sochaux workers did then on my american spec Pooh Pooh...having no experience beyond repairing oil pans with rod braze and a torch. I managed to perfectly fill in all the gaps without a trace of a seam anywhere.yes it took lots of time and trial and error but with focus, it was possible.
American limos are pretty much a joke (build quality build wise), ,except the factory 1s that Cadillac and Lincoln used to make. They were kinda of cool...the 2 door rear ends were always used so the rear doors did not open right up against the wheel wells. I have a Yukon XL...and yeah build quality is a joke...but it's a cheap car that only cost $50,000, My point was, I saw a new Bentley coupe and one could see the roof brazing and hammer marks easily that passed me on Interstate 5
One thing I don't understand about British cars cheap or expensive, why can't anyone stamp, bang or hang straight panels on correctly. Even today, a lowly Kia./Hyundai has better panel fit than a several hundred thousand dollar Bentley, Aston Martin, or Rolls . I laugh at the stupid people here in CA. that spend so much money on a car with mediocre fit and finish. Craft Industry or not, that kinda money should buy perfection.
This factory was antiquated by 1994 standards. OMG. Just WTF. Looking at it I can see no other way other than a buyout and complete rethinking of how to build cars. They did not have to go the way of what mass production was back in the day, but damn that is just so old fashioned like something right out of midevil times. All that banging was completely unnecessary, that background racket completely uncalled for, that english wheel bullshit...for fuck sake...do the world a favor and make some basic metal presses. None of this, none of this at all had in any way contributed to the uniqness of the end product, using antiquated methods like this, even in 1994, I never would have felt bad for Aston Martin going away. Just what an embarrassment. I can see why Porsche was eating their lunch at the time.
The buying of Aston in this shape from Ford in this days must be perceived by all CEOs as a expression of the sinility and endless Enzo hate of Henry Ford II....
