Aston University Achieved 4.5 Million Times Faster Internet Than Normal | Fiber Optic Internet |
In a new groundbreaking development, researchers at Aston University have achieved a internet’s data transmission speed that is a staggering 4.5 million times faster than the average home broadband. Incredible! Isn’t it? Researchers from Aston University collaborated with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology in Japan and Nokia Bell Labs in the US to develop new devices called optical amplifiers and optical gain equalizers. Recently, they announced that they have achieved a data transfer speed of 301 terabits per second on an already-existing fiber network. This over four million times faster internet, compared to the average broadband, opens new possibilities to meet future data demands. This speed could deliver 753 dual-layer Blu-ray movies of size 50 GB every second. An average Brit has an internet connection of just 69.4 megabits per second, or 4.5 million times slower, according to Ofcom. For comparison, that would take approximately 96 minutes to download a single 50GB Blu-ray disk. While far from the world record, the most important thing is how researchers managed to achieve such a speed? And we are going to uncover this for you.

@NRC613 the literal whole point is that it can work with residential homes, this was able to be done with standard fiber optics that already exist in the current infrastructure. Now the real question is how the hell does one used that much data that fast? My guess is that computers will need new tech implemented into their motherboards pci slots that allow high speed collection of data, which then can be used by the system. Sort of like if you had a large amount of ram hooked directly up to the internet. This would allow several dozen gigabytes of data to be collected every second, then from there moved to local storage.

I might be mistaken here but i'm an RF engineer by trade. E=band, L-band, S-band and C-band are all frequency bands part of the Microwave EM spectrum... Fibre works in the visible light EM spectrum. Does the visible light spectrum have a similar naming convention for its frequencies as microwaves do?

I think it is just called the visible light band. And then it is broken up into different colors for the different frequencies. Also, from what I looked up, fiber works from 1Thz to 1000Thz which is from microwaves to ultraviolet.

@@ScienceMatters1 bro it is logically incorrect. you cannot decrease how FAST the internet gets there by increasing the VOLUME received. it's not volume, it's TIME; ping; ms (milliseconds {1/1000 sec}) read | write; bit, byte, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, YB, so on.

Nope. The advantages of the discorvery will impact us the consumers indirectly. In other words, if you already have an optical fibre connection, do not expect to achieve big differences in speed or latency, because the main goal of this discovery is avoiding other fibre infrastructure installations, thus not spending more money to carry data around cities, countries and so forth. In other terms, it's more likely for you to spend lessier in your internet bill (for example: 10 dollars per month instead of 30) than getting insane speed connections (the traditional PCs nowadays are limited to 1Gbps). So, in the future, when PC network cards are going to reach higher bandwidths, you are going to pay 30 dollars per month for a 100Gbps connection (or maybe even lessier).

@@VdonnyVthis requires insanely expensive and powerful processors alongside the existing fiber optics. The slow speed was because processor didn’t and couldn’t use more of the bandwidths. So we’d have to upgrade not only to fiber optics but be able to buy top of the line processors for every device. It’s just not going to happen in the next decade because it’s not cheap

@@Brycki404 Still it is less expensive than digging and pulling additional fiber cables. Plus, the "super processors" you're speaking of are the devices that would be installed in the providers' data centers, not on the customer side. As I already said, the discovery will mainly provide profits due to the possibility of implementation on existing infrastructure installations. I.E.: It's like finding out how to fit more cars on the same highway without the need of expanding any lanes. To you, the driver the cost of fuel will be the same, but you'll have a better driving experience with no trafic.
