Great to see the legendary Fred Rinder there, behind the Villa lads as they come onto the field. Among Rinder's many contributions to Villa and the game, he was to start the tradition of singing "Abide With Me" before FA Cup finals. His feeling was that it was a popular song in the trenches of WW1 and it would resonate with post-War crowds, bringing a sense of dignity and sobriety to the Grand Occasion. Not only did Villa give League Football to the world, their trophy count was unsurpassed for over three quarters of the twentieth century - the original giants of the game. Hopefully Villa will be back at the top soon, ruling the roost, putting each and every plastic Jonny-come-lately club to the sword. A shout out to Sunderland, too, a great club currently going through tough times.
@@vincentmcnabb939 Sunderland, Rangers and Aston Villa were certainly the three biggest clubs in the world AT THAT TIME, but you don't have to get all cry baby and defensive about it... The Irish club you mentioned were a close 4th along with Everton.
@@WashingtonSAFC Celtic were clearly the dominant club in Scotland in that period 1900-1920. You don’t need take my word on that - simply look at Celtic’s trophy count in that period; much superior to that of Rangers. The Irish club, Belfast Celtic, were also by far the dominant club in Ireland then, too.
Incredible footage of what was a remarkable season. Us and Villa both going for the league and Cup that season. As a Sunderland fan to see such legends as Charlie Thompson and Charlie Buchan in action is bliss, thanks for posting
well researched Peter . sadly i wonder how many in the 126,000 crowd from the Birmingham and North East areas would ever see 1919 , after the Trench warfare.
A week earlier in 1913 my team Falkirk won the Scottish cup 2 nil against Raith Rovers, and I was at the game with my dad,I'm 117 yo this year my dad who sadly died 2 years ago he was 139,the funny thing was that our game was in black and white as well like most things were back then ,ps my dad died while taking part in the London marathon,he was running third overall at the time,it was a shock to all the family as well as his 20 yo wife as he was a very fit man for his age.
Brilliant footage of a proper sporting contest. Two massive clubs in the battle of the giants of the time while Woolwich Arsenal, then just an ordinary club, were relegated that season - huge respect from a Gooner.
My great great uncle is the last on the pitch for Sunderland. Jackie Mordue. I only have a few photos of him and a couple of cigarette cards. His brother, Mick, was killed at Gallipoli (my great grandfather) and has no known grave but is on the Hellas memorial.
great film. English football 107 yrs ago is way better than many countries nowadays: better pitch, better crowd, better games, better sportsmanship and players..Britain is the beacon of Civilization. From Hong Kong.
@@kingdomofgeorgia1751 , Numero Uno from famous Italian satiric comic 'Alan Ford'. Numero uno was main character, leader of TNT group. His age was secret, but reportedly he was more than 1000 years old.
Even if your not a fan of either club, (Which i am not), this is still remarkable footage, No pundits spewing their opinions, no pyrotechnics, no VAR, just good old fashioned football.
I'm being always surprised whenever I see Charlie Chaplin movies during the period of 1914-1920, what a good camera management ! But, this match made me surprised again. Lovely. I'm speechless !!!
@@TheBeeseven It is indeed. The game went down in history {though now lost in the mists of time} as the most brutal cup final anyone had witnessed and Charles Buchan speculated 40 years later that had the game been played in the post-second world war era, his former teammate Charlie Thompson and Villa's Harry Hampton would have been sent off. The crowd were expecting fireworks between Charlie Thompson and Harry Hampton who had previous and sure enough, they began kicking lumps out of each other from the first whistle. Eventually, referee Mr Adams took Thompson's name, though, it's believed not Hampton's. Clem Stephenson had the best chance of the first half but as he shaped to shoot, Charlie Gladwin clattered him for a cast-iron penalty, which you can see at 2:00 on the film. Several Sunderland players began verbally abusing Charlie Wallace as he prepared to take the spot-kick and may well have got to him as he fired tamely wide. It remained the only penalty ever missed in a cup final until John Aldridge joined the club in 1988. Suggestions of heated verbal exchanges as the teams left the field at half time were supported by the game almost falling totally out of control in the second half. Charles Buchan {In his Football monthly annual stated that one of his future press colleagues later recalled it as the most violent game of Football he'd ever seen bar a notorious semi-final between Barnsley and Everton a few years earlier that brought the Yorkshire side's participation in the final into question.} The second half would last an incredible 62 minutes before Mr Adams finally blew for full time. The unfortunate ref would be suspended by the FA for losing control of the game while Thompson and Hampton both sat out the first month of the following season through suspension. When Sunderland won the League title the following week, The FA decided it would be best not to have the two sides meet again so soon in the Charity Shield and scheduled the match as an amateur vs professionals game instead. Curiously enough, Villa and Sunderland each fielded two players in the pro team, including Hampton whose ban took effect after the game.
great footage. I believe Villa missed a penalty in the game although it is hard to see. Two top teams of the day it was almost 100 years until the two top teams would play each other in the FA cup final. It was claimed that they were both barred from competing for the Charity shield as they were a bit two rough. A few days later Sunderland beat Villa to win the league title.
Brilliant footage, that has to be the earliest film of a FA Cup final, notice all the supporters in the trees. Great result for the villa, unlike this season's league cup final. MCFC CHAMPIONS
@@Macca-rb5ok 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣cry more loser. Really hope our magnificent treble achievement last season pissed right on your chips. The worlds best football team living rent free inside your empty head
I think the fans and especially the players back then , can now sit down and enjoy watching themselves playing on this video considering it was played 107 years ago in 1913. Hope they are still healthty in 2020.😂😂
1913 Falkirk win the Scottish cup Villa win the FA cup,1957 Falkirk win the Scottish cup Villa win the FA cup,2015 both in the final again and guess what yep both get humped.great footage btw for 1913.
At least the spectators could identify with their clubs back then. Local boys playing for glory and not for money. Today you have a club owned by a foreign billionaire, a team with players from all around the world who only play in England for money and a league that is more interested in the fans overseas than in the UK fans. It has become an international entertainment business for investors.
if you want to know about how football was played then look up ripping yarns golden Gordon and the managers speech on shorts and their value to football
AMAZING FOOTAGE IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO VISIT ANY TIME IN HISTORY! TALK ABOUT A FASCINATING ADVENTURE! 1913 .COR.I DON'T KNOW WHO MADE THE FINAL THEN! 1912 BRADFORD,BARNSLEY OR WEST BROM? 1914 WAS BURNLEY 1-0 LIVERPOOL.? 1913? CAN'T NAME EITHER FINALIST?
Interestingly, Sunderland born, Charlie Wallace missed a penalty for Aston Villa in this match. Furthermore, the next player to miss a spot kick would be John Aldridge 75 years later.
Villa were top of the league at the time and Sunderland second. Only time the top flight, top two teams have contested an FA Cup final. Also attendance 121,000 venue Crystal Palace Park, at the time a world record for a football game. Took Sunderland another 24 years to win the trophy.
@John Saunders Cup Final day didn't become a standalone fixture in the programme until the post-war Television era. Into the 1950s there would have been a full programme of League games on Cup Final day. However, it was always played as near as could to the end of the season. On cup final day 1913 Villa were top of the table but the title wasn't settled until the weekend after the cup final when Sunderland clinched it. Speaking of Villa double winners, they do hold the unique distinction of being the only team to win both major domestic honours on the same day. While playing out the classic 1897 cup final against Everton, League results elsewhere fell in their favour to clinch the title on the same day.
Certainly do mate. There is a painting in the foyer at Roker park of the two teams playing in 1895. It is thought to be the oldest painting of a football match.
@@TheBeeseven The picture in question was actually a painting, quite massive , it is in the foyer at the Stadium of Light. The picture was when Sunderland played at Newcastle road ground and shows 21 of the 22 players. The goalkeeper being the only player not on the picture. The teams played a 4-4 draw at Sunderland's ground in the league. The also played each other in the cup that year in the semi final. Villa won the cup 1m 1895 and later lost it (stolen) Sunderland won the league that year and later became world champions beating Hearts 5-3. The pic is quite popular most art shops sell copies.
@@19sept76 Thanks for the info buddy👍 Hopefully our two great clubs can one day restore our rightful place at the top of English football once all the sugar daddy owners get fed up and leave. Well we can dream anyway 😁
