Very cool, read the NYT article that linked here. Only wish is some of the site labels were bigger since (like a good chunk of folks) I’m viewing this on a phone.
i don't know why but i get the impression that this was trade settlement that relied on the river for transport of goods rather than a religious center
Amazing, this place established for that many years, then disapated into the unknown. This location meant something to them. Where is the remaining knowledge? Hidden or lost
What was the purpose, of so many large holes? What, if anything was in them? A hole 10m diameter by 5m deep holds more than 500 yards, of fill. That's at *least* 25 tri-axle dump truck loads... Per hole.
The first thing I think of is the earth circling around the sun. So was it maybe a calendar? Or just a simple watch? I guess the sunlight shining through the stones in a certain angle at sunrise or sunset hit different holes and maybe that's how they measured time. If it was a calendar it would maybe show them when to plant and harvest plants etc. so they could prepare for winter. After all humans started to cultivate and domesticate plants and animals a long time ago. (Wheat was cultivated about 10 000 years ago.)
